World Athletics is set to introduce a swab test for elite athletes who wish to compete in the women's category at international events.

The "pre-clearance requirement" is part of changes which will further tighten regulations concerning the eligibility of transgender and difference of sex development (DSD) athletes.

In March 2023 World Athletics banned transgender athletes who had gone through male puberty from competing in the female category in international competition.

However, following recommendations from the World Athletics council, external the governing body is now set to revise its eligibility regulations for male-to-female trans athletes on the basis of fresh evidence which it said shows there is a "significant performance gap before the onset of puberty".

Great Britain won three silvers on the final day of the European Athletics Indoor Championships to finish with seven medals.

George Mills was second in the men's 3,000m behind Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who took his tally of European indoor golds to a record-equalling seven with a third consecutive 1500m and 3,000m double.

Compatriot Melissa Courtney-Bryant had to settle for second place in the women's 3,000m after being pipped on the line by Ireland's Sarah Healy.

GB were also runners-up in the women's 4x400m relay, meaning the squad finished eighth in the medal table with one gold, three silvers and three bronze medals in Apeldoorn.

Lina Nielsen, Hannah Kelly, Emily Newnham and Amber Anning ran a national record of three minutes 24.89 seconds to take silver behind hosts the Netherlands in what was the final event of the championships.

Eilish McColgan is targeting the Great North Run in September as the next stage in her switch to marathon running after "a real struggle walking down and up stairs" following her debut at 26.2 miles.

The 34-year-old broke the Scottish record as she finished eighth - the first British woman across the line - in last month's London Marathon.

A four-time Olympian at middle distance, McColgan says it was "a bit of a relief" to put her first marathon behind her, beating Steph Twell's Scottish record - and the previous national best by mother Liz - by more than two minutes.
