Posted January 7Jan 7 Tell them all I said hi, hope you've been well, you've been asleep while I've been awake because of timezone differences. I'll be just fine waiting for ARIA's 2024 End Of Year charts to be posted, upon which I will post them in last year's thread. I don't know if all or some or none of this week's chart factors into the calculation, or if that has any spooky implications for what happens to the list. 06/01/2024 Singles 01 08 11 01 APT. "APT." makes 8 weeks at #1. It's done this despite only managing 17 days at #1 on Spotify so far, a number that is not increasing at the moment. Which is why I feel safe saying it'll be #1 again next week. In all the chaos we do have some entries this week, leading the pack is Chrystal's "The Days" which has been waiting to make its move for a couple weeks and could well threaten the top 10 next week. Something has to displace that suspiciously declining Benson Boone song. SZA finally makes an impression with her new music, getting a single entry with "BMF". I have an extremely reluctant Australian music klaxon 🚨 as we have seemingly made no progress from last year. Royel Otis get their second ever top 50 hit and surprise surprise, it's another cover of an international hit as performed for a radio station, what did we do to be so spoiled for local content? Actually we might have another Australian entry next week so watch this space. The most interesting thing this week though is the arrival of "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, a song that peaked at #100 when it first came out, wasn't let back on the chart when the whole Glee situation was popping off, and has been stewing below the chart in the last few years. By my reckoning it was the 2nd biggest hit of all time to never make the top 50, behind Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" which had its own version of misfortune. The song is of course relevant to me not just because I'm just about to finish watching The Sopranos and I'm told it's fairly prominent in the final episode, but because in September for the finals campaign, the Brisbane Lions social team whipped up a 'Believe' mantra. It turned out to be very apt as the team that had no business being the main character mounted two ridiculous comebacks on their way to Grand Final demolition. The Instagram caption at the time was something to the effect of 'Never stopped believing'. I'm curious to see if any players adopt Journey for a goal song in the 2025 season. Sabrina Carpenter also gets an 8th week at #1 on the album chart. There's very little to note on the chart this week except that Pitbull is somewhat close to a new peak. Also remember when Ed Sheeran's album looked unstoppable? Now it's just barely sneaking back in after 2 whole months out of the top 50.

I think it'll be #1 again next week. Chrystal also climbs into the top 10. ARIA is not yet counting it as a Dance song, so BL3SS & co. are back to #1 on that chart, with a new peak here too. The jig is very immediately up for "Beautiful Things" after living on borrowed time in the top 10 for months, but its power is transferred over to "Slow It Down" which is taking another stab at reaching the top 20. Morgan Wallen replaces his old song with his new song, though Spotify suggests that his somewhat new song is the top dog in the future. Tyla gets her second top 50 hit and we have an actual 🚨 AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 because Sonny Fodera has finally made the top 50 for the first time with "Somedays". It's hardly him just getting a hit now, the song is already gold, and "Asking" went platinum, but we have to take these tangible results when we can get them. As for why it's climbing so suddenly now, I can only guess that Hot Hits Australia is getting a bit more of a rinsing in this January doldrums period, as a lot of climbing/higher-than-you-would-expect songs trace their lineage to it. Sabrina Carpenter gets a 9th week at #1. You can really tell it's January because we have our annual rapid ascent of Maroon 5 even amongst the usual crowd. Lil Baby gives us our first actual 2025 content on the chart.

That'd be around when you think it's going to wind down but actually it took back the #1 spot on Spotify so it's looking pretty safe. The one thing that could throw a spanner in the works is triple j's Hottest 100. I'm avoiding spoilers so please don't tell me, but if I were making predictions, I think Gracie Abrams & Lola Young polling, and "APT." not polling is a pretty safe bet. If they poll particularly high (which they could well), that could be a difference maker. Last week I said that "Kisses" got a new peak. It actually didn't, but it did this week. Ball Brothers gives us a rare new entry at this time of year, and we also have Alex Warren jumping back up for unclear reasons. We've had the song floating around since July, and it made the new music chart too during that brief window where ARIA put Ella Henderson's name on it. They've taken it off which is a rare move in these parts. Sabrina Carpenter also gets a 10th week at #1. Not much to report really except that Bad Bunny has vaulted up to score his first top 50 album. His previous album never quite got there but spent a long time hovering around below the chart, so it probably did better numbers than a lot of #1 albums did. Childish Gambino scores a debut with a re-issue of his #11 peaking album "3.15.20". Also keep an eye on Luke Combs as he gets into his Australian tour here, we could see his debut album finally score a new peak.

The last song to spend as long at #1 was "Flowers" back in 2023 that got to 12, so that's the next target for Rosé. She'll probably manage it but there has been a spanner in the works as promised. We did have triple j's Hottest 100 over the weekend and I'm still recovering. If you wish to learn more about the Hottest 100, my blog powers on. Last week I wrote a particularly lengthy entry ranting about a misconception of an extremely Australian song I was quite proud of. In any case, Lola Young's #4 finish has granted her a certain amount of interest that hasn't really been extended to Gracie Abrams' #5 finish, curious that. It's turning this thing into a three horse race on Spotify, although I still trust the incumbent elsewhere. The big news of the week otherwise is that Luke Combs is back here again. We get a slight variation on the rule of the same songs re-entering every time this happens because "Where The Wild Things Are" actually re-enters at a new peak. You could very well expect him to keep climbing next week. In vaguely new news, Doechii gets her first ever top 50 hit with "DENIAL IS A RIVER", I am very much endorsing this message. Cench & 21 also give us another new 2025 entry which should at least last a second week with the album release. I await to see if 2024's highly touted status as a year in music also makes it very difficult to unseat in the coming weeks. On a related note, I have to point out that ARIA re-tagged "Tweaker" because that's not something that happens very often. I worry that somewhere down the line, someone's gonna misremember the dates and think that it's thanks to triple j's Hottest 100, but no, Gracie Abrams is back at #1 for a second week thanks to a vinyl re-issue. She's not alone this week, we've also got Benson Boone & Fred again.. benefitting. In a week where Australian music struggles are being highlighted a lot, let's put some attention onto the successes, specifically the top debut this week from Dear Seattle. They've previously made the top 50 twice before but no higher than #31, so they're making the big jump to #4 this time around. They're just ahead of Robbie Williams which might almost still count as Australian content. Not because Robbie's spent the last 2 years as a raging Carlton fan (I suspect this doesn't show up in the movie) but because "Better Man" is arguably his best selling song in Australia on pure sales. I have no idea what the perception of this song is in the UK, where it must be at least somewhat known since it's a likeable cut from a very successful album, but one that didn't get its chart tenure properly. Our two countries don't always agree on everything, but I think we definitely should work together in making fun of the incuriosity of Americans regarding this biopic. Mac Miller's latest posthumous full release of an old mixtape arrives at #12, a few spots higher than "Faces" landed.

Billie Eilish 50 46 024 30 96 MONTHS Calvin Harris We've got a potentially interesting chart first this week. For decades we've witnessed the first hand response to triple j's Hottest 100, rebounding past hits, thrusting new ones into the spotlight and whatnot. Something I don't think we've ever seen before though is a song actually reaching #1 as a result of this initial burst. We've had some close calls, like "Heat Waves" looking to have the gumption if not for Olivia Rodrigo's unprecedented numbers (Glass Animals did get to #1 but not until a while later), ditto Amy Shark having to compete with the Ed Sheeran quinella. But I was surprised on Friday to see Lola Young take the top spot given the chart positions I was witnessing. From that it can be concluded to be a fairly close margin and one where "Messy"'s #4 finish to "APT."'s non-entry is enough of a swing to change the course of chart history. What makes it more potent is that there's every possibility that "APT." just gets back to #1 next week. Much like N-Trance's "Stayin' Alive" hitting #1 for a week because "Gangsta's Paradise" ran out of stock in shops on its second week, resulting in a 5-16-1-1-1-1... chart run, Lola Young has managed to shoot her shot with ideal timing. Otherwise this week, Tate McRae gets her 3rd top 10 hit. The massive Luke Combs Australian tour marches on and "When It Rains It Pours" actually manages a new peak. He's still got a couple of shows to go at Marvel Stadium so even if Damien Hardwick won't be in attendance, he could climb again and get that illusive top 20 peak. Teddy Swims scores his first ever #1 album. Part 1 debuted at #4 but you can imagine a few genuine crossover hits later (just the biggest hit of 2024 in the US, nbd) and he's grown to have a slightly bigger fanbase. Central Cee is also on the up, previously peaking at #6, but will have to settle for #2 as the UK rap scene continues to wait for its first ever #1 (I am not counting 21 Savage). Australian pop punk or thereabouts band Slowly Slowly score their 3rd top 10 album this week. I'm less familiar with the glam rock band Sisters Doll despite them being from my home state, but they're charting for the first time ever with their 3rd album at #11. Also charting for the first time is Bad Omens. Well, actually their album has been hovering below the chart for years but now with a new vinyl release, reaches the top 50 for the first time ever. Kane Brown returns with his 3rd top 50 album too.
February 5Feb 5 Oh nice, I was expecting minimal Hottest 100 chart impact this week so I'm happy to be proven wrong. I remember the Hottest 100 2011 pushing The Black Keys - Lonely Boy up to #2, but with 'Wild Ones' being massive it may not have been particularly close between the two.

Once again it's difficult to say it could've gotten there without the Hottest 100, and more fun to think that way. Once again, it's difficult to say what'll be #1 next week. "APT." is closing the gap once again. Amusingly, I'm not counting the last two songs to be #1 on Spotify, "That's So True" and "Not Like Us", although in the latter's case, that's possibly an incidence of Australia being a day behind international news cycles. It's not leading by as much as it is in the UK, but it's possible it'll have a better day tomorrow relatively speaking. A peculiar side-product of GRAMMY discourse, is that all discussion of Benson Boone related manners always escapes my periphery, but it must exist, he's gone and jumped back into the top 10, in a manner that can only be described as ultimate Weeknd trolling. "Timeless" spent its first 3 weeks in the top 10, and in what should have been a sure bet to make the top 10, has returned to #11. On The Weeknd, he only has one debut in the top 50, with "Cry For Me". I haven't heard enough people say this, but "Cry For Me" by Magdalena Bay is an excellent pop song that was released last year, I'm planning on seeing them live next month. Getting new peaks in the top 20, we've got Doechii being 1 position shy (pick your least favourite song in the top 10 to no longer exist) of a Fetty Wap climb (also annoyingly it seems like ARIA are not counting "Again", it previously peaked at #53). Luke Combs also very belatedly makes the top 20 this week with "Ain't No Love In Oklahoma", a truly random winner of most popular Luke Combs song currently. Morgan Wallen arrives at #21, looking to be frontloaded like his recent entries for now. What will certainly not be frontloaded in terms of the first tracking week is Lady Gaga's "Abracadabra", just sneaking in at #50 and looking at a decent climb next week. The Weeknd scores his 5th #1 album. I continue to yell at the clouds in praise of "Trilogy". I neglected to mention Luke Combs' new peak on the album chart last week but I am remembering it now. "This One's For You" is making serious headway to becoming the longest charting studio album ever. It's about a year off the mark but being helped by Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift's particular efforts no longer guaranteeing their standings in the top 50. I hate to report that there are zero Australian albums in the top 50 this week.

In what must have been a reasonably close call, "Not Like Us" ascends to the top spot after having previously peaked at #5 in 2024. We found out that it merely had the same peak as "The Days" by Chrystal and took that personally. This is the sort of impact that's never been experience from a Super Bowl half-time show. I will shout out Rihanna's "We Found Love" for landing some very impressive longevity after the fact, but this is something else. The big question is what will happen next week. "Not Like Us" holds a strong start, but "luther" is making some ground too, and will attempt to improve its #3 peak position, or at least make it feel like less of a fluke than it was last year. In the midst of this, something I wasn't sure might ever happen is that Chappell Roan's highest song on the chart isn't "Good Luck, Babe!", as "Pink Pony Club" overtakes it en route to becoming her second top 10 hit. Alongside all of this, Lady Gaga has the biggest climb of the week with "Abracadabra", although it'll need a jolt somewhere to stop it from going right back down next week. Alex Warren has the highest debut of the week which is also his second top 50 hit in a quick burst. It was not a good week for Australian music as "Somedays" and "Riptide" both dropped out, we'd have nothing across both charts if not for Dom Dolla. We must raise the 🚨 NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON 🚨 once more for "Dreamin", which will hope to grab more weeks in the top 50 but looks like having a "Rhyme Dust" kind of trajectory. The other day (or months ago if you're up to date on syndication) on Jeopardy! all three contestants names started with the letter D and Ken said something like 'good luck to the D's', coincidentally (only for me), we have a very D-infused debut, which is also Daya's first top 50 hit since 2016. Once again, the relatively recent addition of YouTube streams to the ARIA Chart is beneficial to members of BLACKPINK, as LISA scores a top 50 hit that probably wouldn't have gotten there otherwise. Kendrick Lamar returns for a second week at #1 for "GNX". You might think 'Oh, that's interesting, the same artist is #1 with a single that's not on the album they're at #1 with'. It definitely doesn't happen very often, but it's not even been a year since Taylor Swift did the same thing with "Cruel Summer" and "Midnights". Incidentally, "Midnights" falls out of the top 50 for the first time ever this week. It's not all bad news for her though, she has the highest debut with "Lover (Live From Paris)". Dream Theatre score an 8th top 50 album, a touch higher than their last one that only made #42. It's not super common we get an album climbing into the top 50, but Doechii's gone and done that this week. I also just have to remind everyone that it's made incredibly funny that "Not Like Us" is #1 on the charts because Drake spent that very week touring Australia. He doesn't have any singles chart entries to show for it, but does return with "Take Care" and "Views", they're sitting right next to "DAMN.". Speaking of Australian tours, Billie Eilish plays her first show here tonight and she'll be in the country for a few weeks. This is the part where I make a disparaging joke about how she wasn't able to come to Perth and so as far as I'm concerned she isn't here, but I suspect she'll be Luke Combsing up the charts soon enough.

Speaking of which, he dropped a new album on us and then left the country pre-maturely without finishing his tour. I'm trying to catch up on my usual weekly business so I'm not going to say too much here, just that "luther" or "APT." will probably be #1 next week. Also Skrillex's egregious crediting on "HUMBLE." will probably survive the heat death of the universe.

I suspect it was very close because "luther" held a solid lead over it all week on Spotify, but lacks the sales to combine with that. It's possible that "HUMBLE." also missed out on #1 due to sales, it's been a hot minute, but that also did get to #1 on Spotify. Tate McRae debuts many songs in the chart this week, and gets "Sports car" just a little bit higher than before in the process. She's also responsible for kicking out the last Australian song in the top 50, but she brings The Kid LAROI in with her so it balances out I guess. Billie Eilish's Australian tour isn't quite lighting up the chart like I expected, or at least it can't fight off the inevitable decline for a song that's been sitting around the top 5 for 9 months now. With that in mind, "APT." looks most likely to stay at #1 next week.Tate McRae scores her first ever #1 album. Last time she was so close, debuting behind incumbent Taylor Swift, but this week she achieves the what. Australian music does make it over to the album chart this week though. For once it's also a relatively new act. Rum Jungle charting for the first time ever and landing in the top 10 to boot. That puts them ahead of streaming stalwart and occasional bad opinion haver Ziggy Alberts. Sam Fender makes some inroads as well. His last album just snuck into the top 50, now he's sneaking into the top 20. A Day To Remember once had a #1 album, but they've also had a history of dodgy release patterns. I remember years ago when they charted in the top 100 on one or two days of sales, and then had a stunted climb into the top 50 the week after. This time they're charting low just on physical sales with an album that's not out on streaming just yet, guess only Adele can pull it off. In case you were wondering, that's not a new peak for Pitbull but maybe he gets there next week.

This is the second longest reign of the decade behind "STAY". There's a big logjam tie on that unlucky tally, but a likely 14th week would tie ABBA's "Fernando" as the 4th longest runner ever. Amusingly despite all the chaos of the last 3 and a half months, last night we reverted back to the same Spotify top 3 that we had in late November ("That's So True" at #1, "APT." at #2, "luther" at #3). "Pink Pony Club" scores a slight new peak at #6, and just for comparison's sakes, if we had ACR, it'd be #2 behind "luther" probably. We're not so different, you and I. For the 3rd year in a row, the legacy of Gotye's 4th (or 5th) hit song is being retrieved. Australia was one of the few places that Sleepy Hallow's "A N X I E T Y" charted back in 2023, and while it didn't actually make the main chart, the remade "Somebody (2024)" by Chris Lake & co. had an extensive shelf life all things considered. We're now back for round 3, as Sleepy Hallow's version vaults into the top 20...seemingly just as a stop gap while Doechii's version hadn't been properly released. It's now ahead of Sleepy Hallow on Spotify so it could be a short-lived affair once again for this. I am once again desperate to say that back in 2007, this Gotye song had a profound effect on me. It's one of my favourite songs ever. I hate seeing him called a one hit wonder as he's made so many wonderful songs of varying notoriety and you're missing out if you just listen to the one.Billie Eilish returns to #1 for a 6th week. Her debut album also returned to #1 about 10 months after release so this is business as usual for her. Lisa takes her debut album to #5, while Architects score their 5th top 10 album, having hit #1 back in 2021. Green Day have been touring Australia recently and though they had to cancel one of the shows due to the cyclone business in Queensland, they see a healthy vault up the chart this week. They're not charting but I also want to note that it coincides roughly with the Magdalena Bay Australia tour and I'm going to that tonight ^.^ To my knowledge, Pitbull is not coming to Australia. Infamously, back in 2013, just weeks before "Timber" was released, Pitbull & Kesha cancelled an Australian tour due to low sales. Nonetheless, he's seeing a particularly strong showing on streaming lately and vaults up to a new peak like it's nobody's business. I also feel obligated to point out that Drake cited scheduling issues for cancelling the last dates of his Australian tour, and it turned out that he just wanted to watch the Elimination Chamber in Toronto. I've got no beef with pro wrestling but I think it's really funny. Lastly we've got the re-emergence of the greatest war for Australians in their early 50s. I'm of course stoking the flames of what the best You Am I album is and whether it's "Hourly, Daily" or "Hi Fi Way". You Am I are a popular Australian alternative rock band who were remarkably popular given how they operated within that genre (very cerebral & pleasant, not so much on the big dumb riffs & chants). They were the first Australian band to have 3 consecutive #1 debut albums, and those first two from 1995 & 1996 are just about equally beloved. I personally give the edge to "Hourly Daily" as it's stacked at the front with the first 5 tracks just like "Hot Fuss", but "Hi Fi Way" does boast the 1-2 punch of "Cathy's Clown" (not a cover) and "Purple Sneakers". Just a stupendously good band that don't really get the same credit as their contemporaries.

The numbers have just been getting lower and lower, approaching the previous standards of years past (my main benchmark is "Last Night" holding #1 on barely 200K streams a day, whereas less than a year ago, many were doing 400K a day). This probably won't be a concern for much longer though as the levee looks ready to burst. The lead is not strong enough to call it a certainty, but a well timed shot to the top for Doechii might take "Anxiety" to #1 next week. I'll try to look into what the last #1 hit to sample another #1 hit was if that's the case, for now I'll do the 'back in my day, remakes of Gotye songs were seamlessly genre-hopping acts of brilliance'. For the time being, after two near-misses, Doechii has a first top 10 hit this week, and the Sleepy Hallow version has thusly been demoted to the role of 'look it's all we had a week ago' and is quickly sliding back out. Despite being only his second song to ever top the iTunes chart, Drake's "NOKIA" is presently suffering from the same #11 peak that befell "Rich Baby Daddy", his last song that had some legs outside of its initial debut. He'll have some more trouble next week as Alex Warren is vaulting fast towards the top 10. The climb of "Ordinary" this week is accompanied by a new peak for "Carry You Home" (and his album for that matter). BLACKPINK are currently synergy maxing with simultaneous or thereabouts releasing, and now Jennie has a solo top 50 hit. I don't know what Jisoo is up to but it's okay because she already had one two years ago.Lady Gaga scores her 5th #1 album. Just for clarity I am counting the soundtrack to "A Star Is Born". Though her single hitmaking has been inconsistent over the last 10 years, she's never mucked up an album campaign as all of her proper studio albums have gotten into the top 3. I will bring up the BLACKPINK thing again because Jennie debuts at #2. Rosé also debuted at #2, and collectively the group had two #2 albums as well. Lisa lasts a second week with her relatively modest #5 album, but once again I am not sure what Jisoo is up to. This week's great peculiarity is the top 10 arrival of Daniel Seavey. You're learning with me that he was an American Idol finalist and he has nearly a million followers on Twitter. From what I can see though, he hasn't managed to chart anywhere else with his debut album, finally, Australia has forged a unique identity. Speaking of which, this week's highest Australian album comes from '90s stalwarts The Cruel Sea. They were most famous in the mid '90s for their swampy blues rock sound, and frontman Tex Perkins' commanding presence. If you know any of their songs, it's probably "The Honeymoon Is Over" or "Better Get A Lawyer". The latter comes from their album "Three Legged Dog", which debuted at #1 and even spent a second week at the top. This week they return with their first album since 2001. I don't know if anyone falls into the Venn diagram of being interested in this fact while not knowing it already for themselves, but I shall proceed anyway. One of the more memorable characters from Season 2 of "Squid Game" is Thanos, the scene-stealing antagonist. He's played by an actual rapper, T.O.P., formerly from K-Pop group BIGBANG. This week, another member of BIGBANG, G-Dragon gets his first ever chart appearance here. We continue the one-way cultural exchange as Canadian band Spiritbox get their second top 50 entry. The Wiggles' latest venture is jumping in on country music, the artwork is pretty great. Also in peak indulgence for me, our last entry to note is the not-actually-new album from Magdalena Bay that never quite cracked the top 100 on release. The duo were touring Australia last week, and unlike other American artists sitting at #5, #16 & #17 this week, actually visited the west side. Thus, I was actually at one of those shows and let me tell you, it was pretty glorious. This promo gets enough vinyl copies out the door to give them their first ever Australian chart entry. Now the place is on fire.
March 23Mar 23 Wow at Daniel Seavey making the top 10, that feels hugely surprising! He's better known as a member of Why Don't We, who had two top 10 albums in Australia.

Last week I pondered the last time a #1 hit samples another #1 hit in anticipation for this. Evidently the lesson is that it only hits particularly strongly this time when I'm old enough to remember seeing both songs climb to the top, because it's actually not that uncommon. Just last year Eminem did it with "Houdini", and we also had David Guetta & Bebe Rexha's "I'm Good (Blue)". Technically speaking Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" counts, and then you can go back to The Black Eyed Peas' "The Time (Dirty Bit)" before that. But yes, the important thing is that now Gotye has written two #1 hits, so get that one hit wonder tag outta here. As much as I'd like to revel in weekly updates on the Australian perspective, this looks to be short-lived, as the song is dropping about as fast as the Sleepy Hallow version but even if it wasn't, Alex Warren is here to pick up the slack. His large lead on UK Spotify promised to follow through on the Australian chart and with his huge 5 digit gains on Spotify last night, that look to set him atop the throne for weeks to come. Amidst everything else, Chappell Roan sneaks a second top 5 hit and it's weird to think that "Pink Pony Club" is only 1 spot away from being her highest charter, although I do realise I'm typing this on a UK forum. She does this by staying just ahead of the avalanche of Playboi Carti entries. Prior to this week, Carti has operated solely as a featured artist on the chart, but he's forged his own identity now with 6 new entries in the top 50. "EVIL J0RDAN" lands the highest and gives him a 3rd top 10 hit. Alongside all those debuts, Chappell Roan enters at #14 but looks like having a heavy decline next week. It looks to be a sketchy title defence for the reigning Hottest 100 champion. By the way, my blog hits the 20% complete mark at the end of the week. Sleep Token have been accumulating many weeks around the #100 mark for their most recent album and now they translate that to some singles chart success as they enter for the first time ever.Playboi Carti also scores his first ever #1 album this week. I'm reminded of how J. Cole used to release his albums in December and really squander his chart positions in Australia until he finally opted for a regular week and instantly went to #1. I'm not saying that "Whole Lotta Red" would've debuted at #1, but you have to wonder when it still managed to reach #15 here what it could've accomplished. I once again have to check and make sure Alex Warren hasn't snuck "Ordinary" onto his album as it continues to have strong gains but it really probably is just his whole catalogue moving up. I can't say the same for Doechii who I have to call out for this exact tactic, as she re-enters with a new peak thanks to a 'Deluxe' version of her mixtape that just has "Anxiety" tacked on the end. I can't allow this shamelessness to go unreported. Our one other new entry this week is also the only Australian entry this week, as it's the debut album for Mia Wray. She's dabbled in the worlds of pop, rock, dance & country music over the years and never truly broken through although her song "Never Gonna Be The Same" was something of a digital sales hit, and "Where I Stand" has over 20 million streams. I think she's been on a pretty solid run of singles lately, but in any case, this is her first ever chart appearance. Dua Lipa's recent Australian tour brings her entire catalogue back into the top 50, which includes having her newest album ahead of the other two for the first time in quite a while. I guess I should also say that Falling In Reverse were in Australia too. The album is certified gold and I have a hard time believing it's managed to accumulate that. Amusingly, Dua Lipa's self-titled album is also certified gold, I suspect that one's just a little outdated.

With the vaulting of this and much of his back catalogue, it is clear that he's having a Chappell Roan moment at present, except oddly enough his album dropped quite a bit this week, so maybe this week was just an individualised boost for "Ordinary". In any case, he's got a huge lead now on Spotify, whether or not he's got room to grow elsewhere or he's peaked early remains to be seen. His lack of airplay does make me think he's gonna keep climbing on iTunes though. Alex Warren also gets a new entry with "Burning Down", the second time he's done so with a song that charted below the top 50 last year, I think he's out of those. Lil Tecca scores his second ever top 50 hit with "Dark Thoughts", while Ravyn Lenae is charting for the first time with "Love Me Not". A long time coming for a song I first heard back in June last year. When in doubt, just put Sabrina Carpenter back at #1. This is her 12th week there. Her 6 concurrent songs in the Spotify top 200 are doing a lot of legwork, but it's probably very beatable if a major release comes along. I am gesturing in the direction of Ariana Grande. In new entry lack, leading the pack we have some prime WESTERN AUSTRALIAN content. Up and comers Old Mervs get their first ever entry with their self-titled set in at an impressive #4. So far this year, the only win that either of the two Western Australian football teams have gotten is when the two of them played each other and thus one of them had to (probably) win, so a rare W for my state of late. Selena Gomez also scores her 4th top 10 album, and helps benny blanco to heights he'd never seen on his own, as he barely cracked the top 40 with his own album a few years back. The Australian content continues as famed terrorisers of my blog The Cat Empire, are still going at it. They're back with their first new album in 6 years, although it's also their first album to miss the top 10 other than their long charting debut. They previously had two #1 albums, and are currently living off the royalties of "Hello" being on TV commercials again. Maybe I'll have to use that one for next year's thread intro.

When "APT." is still the closest competition you shouldn't be too surprised. The top 8 is nearly entirely #1 hits, with the one exception being "Pink Pony Club" that now lays claim to being Chappell Roan's equal highest charting song. Really benefitting from sliding competition. Drake defies the curse and manages to slot into the top 10 with "NOKIA", and it looks like it'll keep climbing next week. Ariana Grande's new deluxe set gets her a couple of new entries, while there's also a big climb for Leon Thomas to score his first top 50 hit with "MUTT". The Chris Brown remix heavily aided this boost although it's interesting that over in Aotearoa, this boost happened a week earlier, typical Australian slowness. sombr is currently making big moves with two songs at once, but for now it's "undressed" that gets into the top 50 first. I just want to note "Mr. Brightside" re-entering because we've had a reversal of fortunes, where usually of the two, "Dreams" was the one that was more prone to falling out of the top 50. The script has been flipped and it means that "Dreams" has a cozy lead for weeks in the top 50 (155 vs. 146), and is two months away from matching the all-time record from Lewis Capaldi.Ariana Grande returns to #1 for a 4th week with "eternal sunshine". This will likely give it some extra time in the top 50 to prevent it from being her shortest charting album since "Yours Truly", which is interesting because it's now only 1 week away from being her longest reigning album ("thank u, next" managed 5 weeks at #1). Leading the debuts is the debut album from Australian singer-songwriter grentperez from Sydney. Something of a wunderkind, he's been putting out music since 2021 when he was 19 and slowly picking up accolades along the way. I gotta shout out the fact that while a lot of Like A Version covers of late are very restricted to safe and obvious choices, I respect the fact that he made his a cover of the Battle of the Bands song from "School of Rock", just a breath of fresh air. The album is called "Backflips In A Restaurant". For your consideration, I have attached a GIF below of Richmond footballer Seth Campbell doing a backflip in front of about 80,000 fans last month when he kicked the game-sealing goal that allowed his team to perform the upset victory of the year after not being expected to win a single game in 2025. It continues to be the funniest thing that's happened this year. Mumford & Sons return with their 5th album which is also their 5th top 10 (but first to miss the top 5). I'm shocked their last album lasted 11 weeks in the top 50, can this one make it to 2?? Local country singer Travis Collins had been improving his album peaks consistently up until his last which got to #3, he has to settle for #29 this time around. Meanwhile The Darkness have to be credited as one of the more consistently hanging around artists to never reach the top 10, they admittedly missed the top 50 with their last album but they've come roaring back to #45 now. Lucy Dacus may have gone triple stumper on Jeopardy! a couple years ago but she has a solo top 50 album now. Taylor Swift fervour quietens down for the first time in a while as she loses two from the top 50 this week, including "Lover" which has been charting every single week since September 2022. Keep an eye out for "folklore" at #38, which has never left the top 50 once since debut.

It's really not being challenged by anything. I do have to note the bizarre persistence of "Pink Pony Club" which felt like it stalled out weeks ago, but is making small gains along the way. It's now Chappell Roan's highest charting single ever, and I can't even discount the possibility it gets a little bit higher. "APT." has been hanging around the top 2 for so long at this point (although not as long as "Dance Monkey", stay humble). Drake makes a considerable jump to #5 with "NOKIA", the last time he was this high was with 2023's "First Person Shooter", the last time he was this high outside of a debut week was 2022's "Rich Flex", and the last time this was all true with a solo track was 2020's "Toosie Slide". Ed Sheeran annihilates wannabes Sleep Token to have the highest debut of the week, although technically sombr was close too with the promised second debut week in a row. It's a historic week for Australian music this week as Ball Park Music score their first ever #1 album. They're up to their 8th album and previously have hit #2 3 times before, losing to an incumbent Harry Styles and debutant Bruce Springsteen. The roughest moment for them though was in 2014 when they first reached #2, missing the top spot by what I recall being less than 20 sales to the highly incumbent INXS "Greatest Hits" set, coasting off the TV mini-series for weeks and weeks (but that was the final week). Ball Park Music are from Brisbane and in a bizarre twist of fate, both Queensland AFL teams are the only 2 undefeated teams so far in 2025. To put this into context, Gold Coast have never finished at the top half of the ladder in 14 years of contending, and in 2017, the two teams finished at the very bottom. Maybe Ball Park Music were onto something when they released the song "Please Don't Move To Melbourne" earlier this year. Done with the football content for the week, but not Australian content, as Thornhill score a #4 debut, a few years after reaching #3 with their last album. It's meltdown week for all the people making fun of Ethel Cain and her politics after her extremely uncommercial release this year didn't sell particularly well. The vinyl release of her debut gives her a first time ever on the chart at #5. "American Teenager" is a classic but you probably didn't need to hear it from me. Speaking of artists causing meltdowns from people who are too online, it's a huge week for besties and people who have birthdays alike, as Black Country, New Road return with their newest album at #22. I do have to note that their last album got to #6 but I do think this one's way more enjoyable to listen to. For Elton John it's just another one, but for Brandi Carlile, she's scoring her first ever top 50 album this week. "The Story" only got to #44 in 2007 so this is her highest chart position ever in Australia. Marlon Williams is a star in Aotearoa and still goes pretty alright in Australia as he scores a 4th top 50 album, he's had two top 10s before. Possibly helped by his recent Australian tour, though Djo isn't looking like getting a second hit song at the moment, he does manage to chart his new album nonetheless.

Nope, still no competition. Look at all those 3's for "Pink Pony Club", wouldn't it be a shame if multiple of them were shifted away next week? It's more likely than you think that it could climb up to #2. We're provided an interesting look into the world of FOMO and how it compares to not missing out, where the associated boosts from Coachella aren't not especially different to the kinds you'd get if there actually was a festival like that here that people in this country went to. Lady Gaga makes the most obvious gains from it, including "The Fame" coming back from the dead. I wonder if the streams for "Bad Romance" are counting to it, which is funny because "The Fame Monster" originally charted separately (and actually hit #1). Benson Boone's been coasting in and around the top 10 for a really long time without actually having a new entry to his name in like a year, but he does that this week.In what feels like standing up to a vague challenge I made on my blog months ago, Bliss n Eso score their 4th #1 album this week. They were off the #1 Christmas release with their previous album "The Sun", probably because they released on the same week as Kanye West's "DONDA"...the album that has the song "Moon" on it. We have that accompanying "The Moon" album this time around so they're back at #1 for the first time since 2017. Bon Iver's adventures in putting somewhat similar phrases on either side of a comma for album titles finds new inspiriation with rhyming words. It works out a bit better than last time as they're up to #4 this time, having never had a #1 album but hitting #2 twice. If you managed to scroll all the way to the bottom, hi, but also then you'll see a debut at #50 for our latest Australian Idol winner. You might find yourself asking 'Is this high? Is this low?' From a series that used to commandeer the charts to the point that the best selling single of the entire 2000s was Guy Sebastian's winning song, and the second place song was Anthony Callea's not-winning song, maybe it's fallen on hard times. On the other hand, I believe Marshall Hamburger is the first winner since the 2020s revival (which is in its 3rd season) to actually make the chart, so this is a huge win for the burger bros out there. I don't watch the show, ostensibly because Kyle Sandilands is involved but more likely because it's not a venture that lends itself to investment, so I don't know if they've been making jokes about his amusing surname. I don't consider myself above the show in general, as you'd expect from someone who lists an 11th place finisher in Australian Idol from 2008 on my left-side profile.

May as well notch in that 6th week already while you're at it. Previously on the ARIA Chart during sede vacante (ie no current Pope) our #1 hits have been "Beautiful Soul" by Jesse McCartney, "Harlem Shake" by Baauer & "Just Give Me A Reason" by P!nk. The aforementioned promise of "Pink Pony Club" climbing to #2 has come through, which means that 11 of the top 12 now have reached the top 2, talk about sharing. sombr might be looking at changing that as "undressed" climbs very rapidly and should reach the top 10 next week. After 6 months on the chart, "Bad Dreams" reaches a new peak of #26, and is ahead of "The Door" for the first time ever I think. There are no actual debuts this week, if there were, we might have witnessed a bizarre plummet out of the chart for Ed Sheeran from #20, in case you needed more evidence that the Spotify chart screw up has really faceplanted that song's progress. It still hasn't made it back into the Spotify top 50.Sabrina Carpenter makes it 13 weeks at #1 on the album chart. Last time she was at #1 I noted that she had 6 concurrent Spotify top 200 songs doing the legwork. That is still true, although "Juno" has dropped out a couple of times now, a mere drop of irrelevance all things considered as most of her songs are climbing again. She benefits from the fact that very few artists release new music on Easter. I don't think that also still applies to ANZAC Day which was on Friday (Australian lesson: It's April 25th every year). One band that didn't take this hint was Beddy Rays who enter in the top 20. Back in 2022 they entered in the top 10 and I suspect I fascinated you by telling you that their name is a spoonerism on Reddy Bay. I may or may not have said they're pretty good but I'll take the time to say that now. If I'm exceptionally bored next week I might regale you with a history on #1 hits that coincide with Australian Federal Elections, as we've got one of those on the weekend.
