Looks like the ban is really going ahead, huh. Interesting, not a huge loss in terms of app quality but in terms of precedent.... well.

i think not long until rednote and other chinese-owned apps are also banned then

Especially since the text of the Supreme Court judgement takes pains to show that it bypasses 1st Amendment because of the security risk of data from millions of Americans that could in theory legally be all demanded by the PRC, I'm no legal expert but surely this sets a precedent to eventually ban any Chinese-owned tech company? Ironically then creating an insular American internet in much the same way China has.

not a huge loss in terms of app quality

That said as much as I personally dislike short form video content there's clearly a market for it and the integrations that other big sites have done (Instagram reels, Youtube shorts) are both neither really fit for a whole community ecosystem in the same way TikTok had created and obviously directly embedded in the generally far worse American tech companies.

I'm not crying as I never use it and it was very toxic and heavy with misinformation for the younger audience, but I do feel for the normal content creators that make their living off of this whose future is very uncertain. I guess Trump will try and get it back, but may be quite hard for even the president to go against the Supreme Court.

It's the Trump show. Christofascism. Whatever he says, goes. If Trump wants it back, it will be back.

This, unfortunately. :(

The app's user in my country makes teenagers 5-7 years younger than me have a shorter attention span. The comment sections are just even worse, whether those people are just rage-baiting or extremely that uneducated.

Ehhh? Is it? I think it's one of the few social media sites where there is a lot of transparency than others.

I also think to add "I don't see it as a loss" and "I never used it" as not very useful or helpful lmao, okay? Do you want a blue Peter badge? A lot of people do and see it as a way of escapism, building a community and a lot of people are going to be affected mentally. Just try and take your own perspective away from it.

It probably is better in some respects for information as there's less falling for whatever the headline says due to its format, but it can and has very easily whipped up misinformation storms that require users to put out corrections that are never seen by as many people as they need to.

Though while no social media is particularly good for your health, it's one of the worst for promoting quick judgement and short attention spans. If that was the reason for banning it I'd be somewhat happy, but because this is geopolitical and about who owns what a clone will just spring up soon and keep people in doomscrolling bad habits so we don't even get that.

unfortunately this is not a tiktok-limited problem. clickbait titles and thumbnails are often very much present on other social media platforms, especially youtube. i don't think banning tiktok would fix the deep-rooted problem of quick judgement and short attention span... twitter comes to mind immediately, and now that el*n took over this is probably going to get worse especially when your algorithm has not been well-calibrated before the takeover.

Still no idea if it’ll be banned. TikTok say they’re shutting down unless they get assurances from the Biden administration who responded by calling it a ‘stunt’ by TikTok suggesting they can stay active with no repercussions despite not offering those assurances. Either way it looks like Trump will allow TikTok 90 days when he takes over to resolve this situation. So if they do shut down it will be for a mere day or two.

I don’t think this is the correct thing to do, it feels very much like Silicon Valley having a fit because it cannot compete against one of the extremely rare Chinese products that has gone global without the help of dumping or overwhelming tax breaks and state subsidies. This isn’t about fairness it’s about the monopolisation of the worlds data and its monetisation by Americans.

I am generally uneasy about the fact that the Chinese state has access to user data but let’s not pretend as if the US Gov can’t and doesn’t lean on Meta etc. especially now that Musk is defacto president.

TikTok has some serious issues with disinformation and political propaganda manipulating populations in election periods, but they’re not the only app to suffer from this, and Twitter literally just did this in the US and is now focusing on the UK and Germany. These are serious concerns that should be addressed and resolved but not with a ban. We’re not dictators. If trump changes his mind again I do worry that we will end up with a ban forced upon other states for fear of economy ruining tariffs, or worse that the western version of the app is forced into American hands

i've seen online that this access has been questioned and coming from aoc she and some of her colleagues have not seen substantial evidence to back that up

Saved the day lol. Authoriarian right wingers like to run in and pretend they saved everything, but no. Government is beholden to Trump, like I said.

Surely the authoritarians are the ones who wanted to ban it? TikTok seem greatful to Trump by their words. Should a Chinese company be allowed to run in the UK & US when they ban Amazon/twitter/facebook etc? I’m not sure but TikTok should surely be allowed more time to find a solution until then, the security concerns seem like waffle to me.

I think you’d be hard pushed to find evidence of GCHQ monitoring your social media usage but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen
