Biography

BRIT-nominated DJ/producer Nathan Dawe is one of the UK’s biggest breakout dance acts of the last five years. Buoyed by a huge fan base in Birmingham and the Midlands, Nathan’s regional transmits nationwide – as evidenced by a series of standout UK Top 10 singles. From BRIT-nominated UK #3 single ‘Lighter’ ft. KSI to 2022’s UK #9 summer anthem ’21 Reasons’ ft. Ella Henderson, Nathan has established himself as a bonafide and definitive artist. Further collaborations with everyone from Little Mix to Anne-Marie to fellow Midlander, Bru-C, on latest single ‘Oh Baby’ ft. bshp & Issey Cross, also continue to showcase his fluid and versatile approach to music-making. If that wasn’t enough, Nathan has also earned a host of different accolades over the last three years. In January 2021, he was crowned MTV’s Push Artist for 2021 for example, holding off competition from the likes of Griff, Arlo Parks and Pa Salieu, and was later also made an official ambassador of Aston Villa FC’s Academy – the football team he’s supported since he was a boy. Nathan also held down his debut residency at Ibiza Rocks in 2021 – he’s already booked in for a third consecutive slot for summer 2023 – and enjoyed his busiest year of touring yet in 2022, playing festivals including Creamfields, We Are FSTVL, Pierjam, Bassfest and Boardmasters, as well as a host of bustling club dates across Europe. - Spotify

Sam Fender

Biography

Sam Fender crafts the kind of tenacious anthemic rock that punches straight at the gut. Born and raised in 1994 in the northeastern English town of North Shields, the singer/songwriter first picked up a guitar at age 10 and began playing gigs locally as a teen to help support him and his mother. But it wasn’t until he started writing music for himself—rather than what he thought others wanted to hear—that everything started to click. That’s when he wrote his 2017 debut single, “Play God”, a propulsive, politically charged slice of indie rock. It came from a place of deep desperation, “a time where I was like, ‘I need to prove myself. I need to do something that cuts through,’” he told Apple Music. The track earned him a slot on BBC’s Sound of 2018 shortlist, which led to a deal with Polydor Records and the release of his acclaimed 2019 debut, Hypersonic Missiles, an album that channels modern-day anxiety through heartfelt heartland rock. His 2021 follow-up, Seventeen Going Under, hit even harder, pumped full of soaring arrangements and bold statements that continue to prove Fender’s power as a mighty millennial voice for the working class. - Apple Music

Biography

Teddy Swims’ soaring, sonorous howls defy both gravity and genre. Born Jaten Dimsdale in 1992 (outside Atlanta, GA), the singer-songwriter credits his father for introducing him to Al Green, but his influences have spread far and wide ever since. Before going viral in 2019 with showstopping covers of Michael Jackson and Shania Twain, Dimsdale was tackling alt-rock, hair metal, and soul in four different bands. He had also created the alias Teddy Swims as a hip-hop project. But upon releasing his 2020 major-label debut single, “Picky,” and later his heart-baring 2023 debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) (featuring the scorching hit “Lose Control”), the vocal powerhouse has used that versatility to sculpt his own soul-soaked, country-tinged, pop-conscious style—every bit of it highly emotionally charged. “I end up writing the same feeling down in as many ways and perspectives as I possibly can,” he told Apple Music—adding, with a laugh, “It’s my duty to hurt.” - Apple Music

Biography

Central Cee brings a brazen yet conscientious perspective to the hardened UK drill scene. Born Oakley Neil H.T. Caesar-Su in 1998, he was raised in the Shepherd’s Bush suburb of West London. At 13, he began making music that was heavily influenced by the late 2Pac, and further honed his mic skills by listening to contemporary rap juggernauts J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. Initially attracted to the melodic UK trapwave sound of the late 2010s, Cee embraced drill production on 2020’s “Loading,” a boastful song that doubled as an open space for him to reflect on his harsh come-up. Central Cee’s debut mixtape, 2021’s Wild West, saw the MC making revelatory confessions on tracks like the standout “Commitment Issues.” The 2022 single “Doja,” which sampled Eve and Gwen Stefani’s 2001 hit “Let Me Blow Ya Mind,” highlighted his ability to craft clever songs that connect with his insatiable audience. With the Drake-assisted “On The Radar Freestyle” and “Sprinter” with fellow UK rapper Dave—both released in 2023—Central Cee’s artistic reach has expanded from regional to global. - Apple Music

Jimin had spent only six months as a K-pop trainee when he debuted in BTS—the least amount of any of the band’s members. With his natural charisma and strong background in contemporary dance, Jimin was considered a shoo-in for the group, but it would be years before he would get comfortable with his vocals. After more than a decade with BTS, though, Jimin would become one of the most distinctive voices in K-pop. Born in Korea’s southern city of Busan as 박지민 (or Park Jimin) in 1995, Jimin moved to Seoul at 16 to become a trainee at Big Hit Entertainment. In 2013, he debuted alongside RM, JIN, SUGA, j-hope, V, and Jung Kook as a dancer and vocalist in 방탄소년단 (or Bangtan Sonyeondan, aka BTS). They would go on to become one of the most successful musical artists of all time. In 2016, when BTS made international waves with the single “Blood Sweat & Tears,” it was Jimin’s raspy, sensual intro that lured in many new listeners. He further cemented his reputation as a uniquely expressive performer with the release of BTS solo songs “Lie” (2016), “Serendipity” (2017), and “Filter” (2020). In 2023, during a BTS group hiatus, Jimin collaborated with Taeyang, of BIGBANG, on the R&B track “VIBE” and released a solo mini-album called FACE. A six-track record written over a period of 10 months about Jimin’s intense feelings during the initial pandemic period, FACE hit at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, with synth-pop lead single “Like Crazy” debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Co-written by Jimin, the album is about confronting one’s self in order to become a better artist. “Finally free,” he sings again and again on “Set Me Free, Pt. 2,” a self-liberation song that features Jimin rapping—a reminder that finding one’s voice is not only a continuous, lifelong process for an artist, but one that can lead in unexpected directions. - Apple Music

Biography

“Tell it to the world, kiss my name,” LISA sings in Korean in the pre-chorus of electro-pop solo banger “LALISA.” The lead rapper and main dancer in K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, LISA has one of the most recognizable faces and names in the world. But this wasn’t always the case. LISA was born as Pranpriya Manobal in Buriram, Thailand in 1997. As a young Thai teen, she dreamed of being a K-pop star. So, on the advice of a fortune teller, she changed her given name to Lalisa, meaning “one who is praised.” Shortly after, in 2011, she was selected by K-pop company YG Entertainment to become a trainee, and moved to Seoul without any grasp of the Korean language. In 2016, LISA became the first non-Korean artist at YG Entertainment when she debuted in BLACKPINK. Known for their bold, catchy rap hooks and embrace of the “girl crush” concept, BLACKPINK would go on to become one of the most popular music groups in the world. Their debut song, “Boombayah,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s world digital song sales chart, and was followed by other global hits like "Ddu-du Ddu-du" and "Kill This Love.” In 2023, they became the first Korean act to headline Coachella. LISA made her solo debut in September 2021 with single album LALISA, featuring “Lalisa” and B-side “Money.” The music video for the former broke the record for the most-viewed music video from a solo artist in the first 24 hours. “Money" was an even bigger hit, with LISA taking on a classic hip-hop theme: exorbitant wealth. “Dollar bills, dollar bills/Keep on fallin' for me/I love the way it feels,” she raps over a horn loop and the cha-chings of a cash register. - Apple Music

Biography

Solána Rowe had a weird time growing up. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the police into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re Black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hard-headed, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts and what people think about my thoughts.” Following a five-year gap, SZA returned in 2022 with SOS, an album that crystallised her status as one of the most dynamic and commercially dominant singer-songwriters of her era. Coated in an eclectic mix of hip-hop, R&B, folk, electronica and more, the second LP finds SZA tackling imperfect love, with tracks like the No. 3 hit "Kill Bill" and the Grammy-winning "Snooze" embodying the type of songwriting that can be as ironic as it is heartfelt—a trademark for artists that turn emotional chaos into idiosyncratic grace. Her Apple Music Live session, performed at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, was broadcast in January 2024. - Apple Music

Biography

Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, releasing a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”) and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. Though he didn’t release a new album in 2021, he was a constant part of the cultural conversation, dropping a slew of singles, performing at the Super Bowl and on Saturday Night Live (think: “Ladies and gentlemen, The Weeknd”), and winning the Apple Music Award for Artist of the Year. After a banner 2021, he unleashed 2022’s Dawn FM, a cross-decade synth-pop exhibition for the ages. Featuring flourishes of new wave (“Gasoline”), astral rock (“Here We Go... Again”), and other genres in between, the album tightropes the retro and the modern—a singular vision curated by a singular artist. - Apple Music

Biography

Charli xcx’s creative drive and willingness to take risks has made her one of the most enthralling pop artists of her era. Whether she’s penning defiantly joyous singles like “Boom Clap” or exploring her glitchier, chaotic side on “Vroom Vroom”, Charli’s success comes from her work both in and out of pop music’s formulaic lane. Born Charlotte Aitchison in 1992 in Cambridge to Scottish and Gujarati Indian parents, she took up songwriting at 14, lifting her stage name from her instant messenger handle. On the strength of her MySpace uploads and performances at London raves, she landed a record deal at 18, released the modestly successful darkwave cuts “Stay Away” and “Nuclear Seasons”, and then hit the big time with 2012’s kiss-off anthem “I Love It”. Originally scrapped from her own album for being too poppy, the beat-pounding re-recording by Swedish duo Icona Pop quickly became a worldwide dance-floor favourite. Her goth-tinged debut album, 2013’s True Romance, and tracks like the psychedelic, Gold Panda-sampling “You (Ha Ha Ha)” soon positioned Charli as the missing link between Grimes’ freak scene, Lorde’s dark melodies and Carly Rae Jepsen’s sweetness. But while that album and its follow-up, 2014’s synth-poppy Sucker, brought Charli a few steps closer to mainstream approval, she found more creative freedom among the esoteric, hyperpop wilds of 2016’s Vroom Vroom EP and 2017’s twin mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2. While stardom eluded her, Charli built a track record as a prolific songwriter and collaborator, penning standard pop hits for Iggy Azalea (“Fancy”) and Selena Gomez (“Same Old Love”), and working with the likes of Lil Yachty, David Guetta and BTS. Yet Charli shines brightest when she’s illuminating, breaking down and even critiquing the industry that gives her acclaim. In 2020, a year after the release of her eclectic, star-studded third album, Charli, she released the intimate how i’m feeling now, an album written in six weeks during the pandemic with input from fans alongside extensive, real-time video diaries and notes. Two years later, she experimented with the act of selling out on her fourth album, CRASH, using her major record label’s A&R expertise to write the mainstream pop record she’d always been afraid to release. That album’s success, coupled with a prominent feature (“Speed Drive”) on 2023’s blockbuster Barbie soundtrack, brought Charli closer than ever to worldwide appeal. But her response was to turn back to the sounds that inspired her to make music in the first place. Her 2024 album, BRAT, is a homage to those riotous, sweaty London clubs of her youth, and an introspective—if not slightly ironic—look at her pop music journey, one riddled with head-empty euphoria (“Club classics”), dominating swagger (“Von dutch”) and sombre sentimentality (“I think about it all the time”). - Apple Music

Biography

PAWSA

PAWSA is a London-based DJ and producer who writes stripped-down, straightforward tech-house tracks strictly for the dancefloor, with driving grooves, sparse melodies, and energetic vocal samples, often drawing from hip-hop. First appearing during the mid-2010s, he's released most of his music through his own labels, Solid Grooves Records and PAWZ. Tracks like "Party" and "The Groovy Cat" emerged as club and streaming favorites, and PAWSA became a regular at clubs in Berlin and Ibiza, among other locations. He's continued issuing tracks such as 2021's "ALL EYEZ" and 2024's "COLLECT THE COMMAS." - Apple Music

The Adventures Of Stevie V

The Adventures of Stevie V was a British dance music act from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it scored several hits on the UK Singles Chart and the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, most notably with the song "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)". - Apple Music

Haven't wanted to make any unnecessary posts that might slow me down further but Newsbeat's here so I guess I can

Nice to hear 30 for 30 this week, sounds decent but I prefer BMF of the SZA deluxe songs (and both of the SZA and Kendrick collabs still to come). Think that was Carry You Home's first play on the actual chart show since it re-entered!
