24 2 17 CRAZY LOVE - Above & Beyond featuring Zoe Johnston 597100

Above & Beyond have never got that breakthrough hit which is a shame, I generally like what they do, and occasionally love it - so it's nice to see them return to the 100 with Crazy Love courtesy of a nice vocal from Zoe Johnston her of previous bangers from Faithless and Delerium, so it's been a while since she had a top Trance year-end entry. She's from Nottingham, so ey up Zoe!

I really miss emotive epic synth dance like this making the charts; it was last popular in 2012-13.

23 1 15 SCREAMLAND - Father John Misty 656850

I'm in favour of pop stars named John - well I would be wouldn't I, says John - and this is the second Father John Misty track to make my top 100 - the previous one was a lovely 1940's-styled song for actually-named Joshua Tillman former Fleet Foxes member, Funny Girl. Screamland is an epic single in the sense that it's almost 7 minutes long and takes you on a folk-rock journey with strings and distorted vocals and a wide-screen movie vibe to it. It's fab.

22 6 25 GOOD LUCK, BABE! - Chappell Roan 702450

The one that broke Chappell Roan into the mainstream after 5 years of nearly-did-it good singles, a couple of which nestled in previous top 100's of my year. The hook is irresistible and she'll be around for years dropping good stuff.

21 5 32 ESPRESSO - Sabrina Carpenter 741300

Sabrina's summer anthem of 2024, this one's going to be remembered decades from now, a joyous-sounding laid back pop vibe with biting lyrics and a great video, driving Sabrina from an occasional chart visitor to the pop star of 2024, it's not close and radio was buzzing with her various chart-toppers which banged out in a rapid hat-trick. The second and final of her hits, t'others fell short of the 100. For 2024 at least. 2025 will have others, as with Chappell Roan.

20 3 15 DISCO AT THE STRIP CLUB - Reve 753850

Great dancepop track in a very Dua Lipa retropop vibe, cool and lots of great bits within the track to hook into. A complete flop of course, but if Dua Lipa had recorded it, an obvious hit.

19 4 34 BIRDS OF A FEATHER - Billie Eilish 756650

Only peaked at 4 in my chart but hung around for most of the year cos it's just fabulous. Achingly low-key and beautifully sad-happy, and this video came out late in the chart run as it turned into a hit from the album from day one, as opposed to an advance single. One of her greatest records (although credit should include Bruv Finneas Eilish as a main creator/co-creator). What an absolute gem and radio-friendly in a way some of her singles aren't.

18 1 18 DANCING STAR - Pet Shop Boys 769200

2nd single off the new album, and typically unusual subject matter as they write about Rudolph Nureyev's escape from the USSR during a ballet tour in the 60's, which gives it a sort of 60's nostalgia mixed with mid-80's Pet Shop Boys production nostalgia, enough for them to grab the top slot on my charts until the album dropped a week or two later, Nonetheless.

17 1 17 BURNING IN FLAMES - Kaiser Chiefs 839900

The new album Kaiser Chief's Easy 8th Album had a number of great singles on it, as Kaiser Chiefs turned out the best crop of tracks since their 2000's heyday when they could do no wrong. The 4th of 5 singles and they still struggled to get noticed bar the odd Radio 2 play, annoyingly, as this may well have been a hit in, say, 2006 or thereabouts. Poprock is SO passe to modern ears.

16 1 16 BLAME YOU - Nero featuring Alana Watson 898000

Talking about passe, most old-skool dubstep/drum'n'bass exciting dance tracks struggle these days too, like Blame You did. Alana is actually part of the band, but I like to give credit for a nice vocal and this chugs along nicely. Play loud and dream of finding a club that would play it like it was 2011, when Promises topped the charts.

15 1 25 HOLD ON HOPE - Glen Campbell & Eric Church 1021100

Glen Campbell's final 2011 album got the duets treatment a few years after he passed away battling Alzheimer's for years, and in some cases it shined a spotlight on tracks that slipped by like this one with contemporary Country star Eric Church. Hold On Hope was optimistically sad and like much of the album sort of related to Glen's condition. I find it very moving and Eric added a new pathos to it. Glen first made my year-end top 100 in 1969 with 2 tracks. And in 1970. And still in the 2000's and 2010's.

14 1 28 THE GIRL THAT I CALL HOME - Tears For Fears 1069300

This has that classic 80's Tears For Fears vibe, and Roland & Curt can never be written off, always liable to drop a great record out of the blue after a long lay-off. I find I have a lot of love for Roland and Curt since the loss of Rolan's wife and them getting back to record. This is a great song and could fit comfortably onto any of their big albums, I think. So, that'll be a 43 year-span of year-end top 100's then!

13 1 25 HEART LIKE MINE - Sam Feldt featuring Rosa Linn 1102950

Take a Clocks sample, a Eurovision flop singer that still grabbed a global hit out of it - what do voters know eh?! - and a When Love Takes Over vibe, and then drop a banging dance tune that should have been huge but as it isn't 2008 it wasn't. Short and bangin'.

12 1 25 YOU AGAIN - The Lottery Winners featuring Reverend And The Makers 1116100

Two great traditional melodic poprock acts bangin' out major quality tracks and albums that deserve to be WAY better-known than they are, and as I keep on harping on, in former days they would have been, but the streaming era is not kind on mature retro genres. Two great singers in the Rev aka John McClure who sings in Sheffield-ese, and who had some 00's success which has continued in my year-end charts of late, and Katie Lloyd works well with male vocalists on songs with two points of view being expressed - there will be more from both in 2025.

11 1 26 ECSTASY - Rose Gray 1151500

Rose has never troubled the charts, but makes good dance-pop singles, especially this one from 2023 that I got into belatedly. It's got a House production that would have gone down well in the 90's - or indeed now, but for some reason it didn't click. Maybe TikToketty should give it a boost, it's pure class. Or a TV series slot.

10 1 23 CARRY YOU - Martin Garrix, Third=Party & Oaks featuring Declan J Donovan 1154500

How to get a dance hit in 2025 - afrobeats, or get a host of collaborators on the credit. Box ticked for the latter in this case, but they forgot to grad David Guetta or Calvin Harris. A shame as this is pretty good, Oaks has a great vocal style, and Declan J. Donovan is among the better of the shouty-straining male singers that dominate at present. Martin Garrix has had many a goodie over the last decade or so, so this fits in well with those, in a pseudo-Avicii style.

9 1 28 NEVER GOING HOME TONIGHT - David Guetta & Alesso featuring Madison Love 1181600

Talking of David Guetta, who still grabs chart hits as he pushes 60, something of a major achievement these days to be applauded - 20 years and counting - but this gem was bizarrely not one of them, not even with Alok on board, still good, and a great vocal from Madison Love. I really dont get why this anthem flopped when lesser tracks chart. Hey ho, everybody's wrong and I'm right, so there. 😇

8 4 57 FEEL - Pet Shop Boys 1227400

Peaking at 4 in my charts as an album track, and subsequently released as a single with a great video, this stayed on my chart for over a year, cos it's brilliant. It wasn't the most immediate track on the Nonetheless album but it had legs and quality, and outdid all of the other Pet Shop Boys on the list bar one. Lush, melodic and optimistic, and it ended up being the biggest track to ever peak at 4 in my personal charts - and oudoing rather a lot of the many many Pet Shop Boys number ones in my charts.
