I'm 16 so a bit of a new fan. I was watching vh2 last summer and 'there is a light that never goes out' came on and I instantly fell in love with it so I went and bought most of their songs on itunes, so that's how my smiths fandom started. I'd always been told they were dreary, depressing and miserable so I was suprised to find them witty, original and melodic.

Mines been since i was about 13, being from Salford, 'please, please...' was a nice video, a heart-warming video, if you will. Cos of where it was filmed :)
In my case it was two persons. First my brother showed me some songs on The Queen is Dead. A few weeks later I put the song "The Queen is Dead" in a compilation I did for my English teacher (a very cool guy, the best teacher I have ever had) just to see what he would say, and so he lend me The two best of's and I really liked so I started listening to some of the albuns my brother had already bought. Since then I didn't stop until I heard every song they have. :)

As a teenager in the 1980s they were one of my two favourite bands.

I was probably the only person at school/college who liked both Duran Duran & The Smiths probably because they were musically diverse at the opposite ends of the scale to each other in terms of image, sound and aesthetics, yet they both released some fantastic tracks.

Morrissey is IMHO Britain's greatest ever lyricist. While Johnny Marr was the perfect foil with his tunes.

One of my brothers has always been a big Smiths/Morrissey fan and it was hearing him playing The Smiths that got me into them in the first. Then when Morrissey made his big comeback for the first time in six years a couple of years with 'Irish Blood, English Heart' that's when I REALLY got into them and decided to buy some of the albums myself.

The Ordinary Boys amongst other bands who were heavily influenced them also played a big part in me wanting to find out more about them. :D

I heard a few Smiths songs years and years ago, liked them, didn't realise who it was. Then saw a documentary on Morrissey a few years back, went out and bought The Queen Is Dead and Meat Is Murder, the rest is history.

Last summer, the video for You Have Killed Me came on a late night Alternative Music Video show (only time I ever heard/saw the song before buying the cd), and I liked it and when I was in HMV, Suedehead his best-of caught my eye (nothing to do with the cover...) and I bought it and well fell in love basically.
I found a DVD of The Importance of Being Morrissey in HMV, around a few months back, and watched it out of curiosity. And I kinda liked his face and, uh, everything else so I discovered his music and that led me to love both Smiths and Moz.

you saw them? :o

Ahhh thought this was the 'Have you ever seen them live' thread :P

I meant on TV....

I was too young to see them actually perform live, unfortunately...

I've seen Moz on his own a few times though....

Remember seeing a video for 'Girfriend in a Coma', which is what got me liking The Smiths...

Kyle

who´s moderating this now?

Don't know yet ;) People need to apply for it :D I would do it but I don't think I really post enough to handle four forums and this forum needs someone who's commited to keeping the forum active and to promoting it as there is a lot of potential here as you'll find Morrissey obsessives left, right and centre
