I don't think I would have predicted in advance that I'd choose Armand for the win this year but I really do love it and think it's one of the best house songs to grace the UK chart.

I was pleased to see that my guess for ATB was your #1 of the year - I associate it with you actually as I think I've seen you mention it quite a lot in terms of how much you liked the UK version of it. I too like it but it's never been a total fave of mine, there were many more trance singles from 98 and 99 that I preferred but it's easy to see why it was 9PM that made #1 here. Blue was a great choice for runner up, I really loved it at the time and was one of the ones who bought it on import before the UK version was released - it's really held up far better than you'd necessarily expect a euro pop/euro dance single from the 90s to and amazing that it essentially made #1 all over again with David Guetta. Britney is a solid choice for 3rd too, I didn't particularly care for it back in 99 as I found the whole school girl thing a bit icky, but it's definitely a strong pop track and deserving of its success.

  • I've had the opposite trajectory with "Lift Me Up", thought it was cheesy and corny at the time, now I love it. I just find her vocals so warm on the track, like a cosy blanket from the 90s, very nost

I agree, it is really strange, considering how big Mambo no 5. was. It was the highest selling song of 1999 in Australia too, so for I Got A Girl to underperform the way it did was surprising. Also o

I don't understand how anybody can like 90s dance music. Only Motown girl groups are worse.

I think it's because you place zero value on the music part of a song and place 100% on simple melodies. You recently stated that The Prodigy's Firestarter is your least favorite number 1 of the 90. ....or something along those lines. It's among my top 5 number 1s of the 90s. Because it's amazingly well constructed, mostly from samples and is such a coherent piece that most people wouldn't hear that. I don't hold back from saying that I think Liam Howlet made some of the most incredible music ever made.

Some comments.

I'm happy to see Flat Beat and Praise You so low. I never liked either.

Baby One More Time took ages to grow on me.

My favourite Backstreet Boys song is The Call.

I really need to re-assess Five's output.

Trance was clearly setting the world a light thanks mostly to Ferry Corsten.

I believe 9am sold the most in week 1 of any instrument ever (if you don't count the spoken word parts).

I think I've settled on my favourite #1 of the year perhaps being Armand Van Helden, but what a phenomenal year though! A pretty diverse selection of #1s here in a variety of genres, so many classics.

I actually feel is was a very weak year for number 1s.

The only ones I would listen to out of choice would be

Armand Van Helden feat. Duane Harden - You Don't Know Me

Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)

Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle

ATB - 9PM (Till I Come)

Robbie Williams - She's The One

and I haven't listened to those in years
