Brendon McCullum has apologised for England's results under his leadership after he was sacked as Test coach on Sunday.

England have lost seven of their past nine Tests, 19 of their past 38, and have not won a five-match series against either Australia or India in McCullum's four years in charge.

The New Zealander will remain as head coach of England's white-ball teams and has a contract until the end of the 50-over World Cup in southern Africa in the autumn of 2027.

"It's a results business and, unfortunately, we weren't able to get the results we wanted and for that I'm sorry," McCullum told BBC Sport.

"India and Australia are the marquee series and if you don't win those you haven't quite been able to achieve what you wanted to. We achieved some good stuff over the four years but, fundamentally, the results didn't live up to it at the back end, hence the decision was made."

Definitely on the podium but I reckon Starc did it all to wrap it up in the first two tests

Normally I would agree, just feel that Head's century and the way he went about it broke England in Perth, setting the tone for the whole series. I think England has a lot to think about as Australia

A major result for Irish cricket, I was actually tempted to go to it!

Brendon McCullum's reduced role as England's white-ball coach began with a reminder of how much work there is to do on a one-day team beaten by India.

Two days after McCullum was sacked as Test coach, England were outplayed to lose by six wickets at Edgbaston in the opening match of a three-game series.

England had outclassed the tourists to win the T20 series 4-0, but this was a different India side, boosted by the inclusion of superstars Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill.

It was Gill who made the main contribution in the chase of a meagre 259.

The 2027 ODI World Cup, to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, will be a 14-team event but will include a Super Series round before the group stages, and a new Super 7 before the semi-finals.

The new structure, announced by the ICC on Wednesday following the body's Annual Conference in Edinburgh over the weekend, was introduced, the ICC said, to "enhance consequence" in the early stages.

Teams qualifying 12th to 14th will play the Super Series round. One team from the three will progress to the Group round, becoming one of 12 teams split across two groups. The top three from each group along with the next-best-ranked team across both groups will then qualify for the Super 7, from which the top four go through to the semis.

Ben Stokes is set to play for the first time since retiring from international cricket by appearing for Durham at Derbyshire on Tuesday.

The former England captain will be part of the opening round of matches in the One-Day Cup – the day The Hundred begins.

Stokes announced an abrupt retirement from international cricket during England's third Test against New Zealand last month.

Before that match, 35-year-old Stokes missed the second Test during an investigation into an incident in a London nightclub.

Jersey look set to have to go through an extra round of qualifying if they are to reach the 2028 T20 World Cup.

The International Cricket Council are planning to introduce a Global Qualifier to follow their regional qualifying tournaments.

Jersey won Sub Regional Europe Qualifier A in May, taking them through to what was set to be the final round of European qualifying next summer alongside Italy, Scotland, the Netherlands, Denmark and one other side.

But under the new plans, sides which reached the last T20 World Cup but did not earn automatic qualification for 2028 will play in the Global Qualifier.

Last year Jersey missed out on a place at the 2026 tournament on net run rate, having beaten Scotland to finish third behind Italy and the Netherlands.

The change means Jersey will now face Scotland, Denmark and one other side, with the top two teams progressing to the Global Qualifier.

Andy Flower has ruled himself out of the running to replace Brendon McCullum as head coach of the England Test team.

McCullum was sacked from the red-ball role earlier this month following a run of poor form and a number of controversial off-field incidents, but he remains in charge of the England white-ball set-up.

Flower was England head coach from 2009 to 2014 and helped the team to win the Ashes on three occasions, including their last away win in 2010-11, before leaving after a 5-0 series defeat in Australia.

The Zimbabwean is head coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and led them to the Indian Premier League title in 2025 and 2026
