One of her best ballads! I also think it’s aged very well like it has a timeless feel about it but I think there’s something about the production where it feels like it’s something what could be sampled in today’s charts pretty successfully.

I first become aware of this track due to the performance of it on the Confessions tour so I remember being taken aback slightly when I heard the actual track.

As time goes on, this has really secured itself as one of my favourites, probably the best from 'True Blue' which is no mean feat given it's her strongest line-up of singles. The emotional vocals, the haunting yet comforting production, the sophisticated lyrics; it's such a dramatic change from the Madonna known before and insists you to take her seriously as an artist.

It's only been performed four times on tour but each one has been an absolute spectacle and hits the spot emotionally. The Confessions Tour particularly comes to mind with the striking image of Madonna on the cross as the AIDS statistics counter increases on the screen behind her.

This video of Patrick Leonard detailing the creation of this song was a good watch:

This is a masterpiece! I love how it's structured, really allows the song to breathe.

I always think of it as the darker counterpart to 'Crazy For You', like the shade to its light.
