Posted April 1Apr 1 29th March 2026It's a second number one for Neil Sedaka s 1974's The Immigrant finally tops the chart 51 years late, having gone top 10 for me in 1975, and in the US charts, but it flopped in the UK. It was written for John Lennon, then trying to get a Green Card to stay, but hassled by the government due to drug-related arrests and political messages like GIve Peace A Chance. The record remains relevant, and Neil finally gets a second number one 54 years after his previous oldie Oh! Carol was a UK hit again in 1972. That remains the chronological oldest record to top my charts, dating from 1959, but it was a mere 13 years late compared to 52 years. That would have been like a World War I recording topping my charts in 1972! Elsewhere, Harry Styles gets a second current top 10 with American Girls, while Jessie J gets her first new entry in 14 years and her 6th in total over 15 years. California is pretty good and conjures up the spirit of r'n'b tracks of 2 or 3 decades back. I saw new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary last week, it's a great feel-good movie for these dark times, and one of the cast does an affecting version of Harry Styles' Sign Of The Times, so that re-enters my chart at 67 9 years after peaking at a lowly 45 first time round. I under-rated it I think. Ella Langley wants to Be Her new at 70 as she is still Choosin' Texas, both very good Country tracks, and there's a surprise Scouting For Girls return at 73, Get What You Give is their first return in 14 years and it makes a 9th chart entry in 19 years. Marshmello are back again to have two on the chart, this time with Portugal. The Man on Phoenix at 74, 11 chart entries in 9 years including a number one with Jonas Brothers. Portugal. The Man also have a second entry for 2026, a 6th in 13 years. Charlie Puth is new in at 77 with veteran support from Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins, who first charted as song-writers for me in 1979 on What A Fool Believes for The Doobie Brothers, so that's a chart span of 11 years for Charlie (5 charters), 47 years for Michael (at least 7 charters) and Kenny only his 3rd chart hit in 42 years. Those chart stats pale somewhat with the final two new tracks: Suzi Quatro (who I'm seeing in a week or two) is back with her second of the year Kick Out The Jams for 53 years of new material making my charts since Can The Can kicked out the first jam, but that's beaten by a year by Alice Cooper who guests on the track for 54 years on new material since School's Out. That's Alice's 16th and his first new one in 32 years to chart! Suzi's on 21 chart hits and only missing the 90's out, and oddly neither of them has ever topped my charts. That leaves the living legend that is Paul McCartney getting his first chart action since The Beatles Now And Then topped my chart, and extends his chart run to 58 years as Hey Jude stood astride my first compiled chart, so naturally that's a record. I don't have complete chart total for the man but pretty much every single and loads of album tracks have charted over those 58 years, including the Beatles back catalogue, so he is unlikely to be beaten. As a solo act he first charted in 1971 and last charted in 2021. Days We Left Behind enters at 80 ahead of the new Liverpool-referencing nostalgia album, which may well remind me of my childhood time there.1 3 1 5 THE IMMIGRANT - Neil Sedaka 4070002 1 1 5 I CAN'T WAIT - Bob Sinclar & Kiesza 5320003 5 3 7 LUCKY AGAIN - Lykke Li 2524004 6 4 5 LAUGHTER IN THE RAIN - Neil Sedaka 2173005 9 5 7 DRIVE SAFE - Myles Smith & Niall Horan 1646006 4 1 10 APERTURE - Harry Styles 8813007 2 1 7 DON'T WANT YOUR LOVE - Ilennium & Ellie Goulding 5095008 10 8 5 VERTIGO - AVALAN ROKSTON 1394009 7 7 5 PRAYER - David Guetta, Kiko & Olivier Giacomotto 17340010 23 10 4 AMERICAN GIRLS - Harry Styles 7025011 8 8 7 HOMEWRECKER - sombr 15180012 14 12 5 RIDE - Jessie Ware 11050013 11 11 13 GIVE ME SOMETHING - OneRepublic 25555014 12 1 16 RELIQUIA - ROSALIA 113150015 19 15 5 STAY THE NIGHT - Winona Oak 9370016 22 16 5 BAD BLOOD - Neil Sedaka featuring Elton John 7930017 24 17 7 STARLIGHT - Cannons 8480018 13 8 7 MCARTHUR - HARDY, Morgan Wallen, Tim McGraw, Eric Church 18800019 15 1 16 FREE LOVE - Cast 126925020 25 20 7 FEELS LIKE HEAVEN - Loreen 10365021 27 21 9 PINS AND NEEDLES - Callum Beattie 9765022 31 22 5 LOST - almost monday 7335023 16 6 11 EMBERS - Robin Schulz featuring Izzy Bizu 31335024 21 1 25 LOTUS - Rose Gray 140485025 20 1 15 TELL ME THERE'S A HEAVEN - Chris Rea 115375026 17 5 13 BROKEN STRINGS - Alan Walker featuring Katherine O'Ryan & Isabella Melkman 54700027 18 16 11 HAND IN MY HAND - Rob Thomas 17260028 30 28 7 COLD SWEAT, HOT BOYS - Bright Light Bright Light featuring Ana Matronic 9130029 39 29 5 LOVE WILL KEEP US TOGETHER - Neil Sedaka 5810030 40 30 7 VINCENT - Don McLean 7320031 26 4 20 YOUR LAST SONG - The Lottery Winners 79030032 37 32 5 TO LOVE SOMEBODY - Holly Humberstone 5985033 29 22 11 ALL MY LIFE - Robbie Williams 15290034 28 28 7 DIE FOR ME - ZAYN 9885035 45 35 3 CLUB SONG - The Pussycat Dolls 3370036 47 36 4 UNIVERSAL SOLDIER - Depeche Mode 4330037 44 37 3 I DON'T EXPLAIN - Owen James 3755038 51 38 5 FEVER DREAM - Alex Warren 5085039 48 39 4 WHY DON'T YOU - Squeeze 3760040 41 40 5 SLEEPLESS IN A HOTEL ROOM - Luke Combs 5430041 34 1 17 SHAKE IT DOWN - Mud 101115042 35 1 28 SECRETS - Miley Cyrus featuring Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood 137995043 42 1 19 WONDERFUL WORLD BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE - Jimmy Cliff 78665044 49 44 7 I DON'T UNDERSTAND - MT Jones 6365045 43 13 26 HELLO - Sigala x Leigh-Anne x Jonita Gandhi 45490046 66 46 4 NEW RELIGION - Bebe Rexha & Faithless 2635047 32 18 11 MORRISSEY - Robbie Williams 18900048 53 48 5 LOVE ME - Fia 4345049 61 49 5 WAITING ON YOU - Rick Astley 3260050 55 50 5 THESE NIGHTS - Cannons 3480051 33 15 18 ESIBIZIONISTA - Annalisa 27515052 38 5 11 TROUBLE FOLLOWS - YONAKA 35160053 67 53 5 REIN ME IN - Sam Fender & Olivia Dean 2925054 58 54 9 READY - CMAT 5860055 54 8 24 SAVE MY LOVE (NICKY ROMERO REMIX) - Marshmello, Ellie Goulding & AVAION 57360056 46 1 28 DIE WITH A SMILE - Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars 95345057 36 22 20 CHOOSIN' TEXAS - Ella Langley 26370058 62 58 5 FAR AWAY - Labi Siffre 2950059 71 59 3 SAVE ME TONIGHT - Jennifer Lopez & David Guetta 2010060 59 1 42 GOD ONLY KNOWS - The Beach Boys 127845061 73 61 4 WHEN YOU ARE A KING - White Plains 1840062 NEW 62 1 CALIFORNIA - Jessie J 740063 63 63 7 ALLIGATOR STOMP - Tony Joe White & Flying Mojito Brothers 3400064 60 1 30 BRAND NEW ME - Saint Etienne featuring Confidence Man 128175065 75 65 2 5:00 AM - Michael Schulte 1200066 77 66 2 YOU'RE A SUPERSTAR - Take That 1140067 NEW 67 1 SIGN OF THE TIMES - Harry Styles 660068 76 68 2 JUST WORDS - Midge Ure 1120069 80 69 2 HELL ON EARTH - Squeeze 1020070 NEW 70 1 BE HER - Ella Langley 600071 70 70 5 REJOICE - Def Leppard 2300072 65 65 5 BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO - Neil Sedaka 2190073 NEW 73 1 GET WHAT YOU GIVE - Scouting For Girls 540074 NEW 74 1 PHOENIX - Marshmello x Portugal. April 2Apr 2 Hi John, some more new entries than last week - that is good. The Ella Langley song is very good and was in my Top 20 some weeks ago. I remember Neil Sedaka from my research on 70's charts, where he had some minor hits. Looking now at his charts history shows that his most succesful times were the early 1960's - this is a time period where I still have gaps. Need to check out "The Immigrant".

Neil Sedaka had bigger hits in the USA in the 70's, but his comeback was in the UK first and he was based over here for a while till his career took off again in the USA. He worked with 10cc and Elton John in 1972/4 and 10cc played and sung on some of his stuff. His 60's stuff is fun, though 😎thanks for the comments!cheers🙂

My friend organises so that's easier for me! Bob S and Lykke are both great tracks, fab to see comeback with good material if not actual hits. Jessie's Ride is very naughty, I can see why Radio 2 not keen, not that her others are that much tamer, she seems to be riding a theme, so to speak! That Ennio Morricone borrow really works! New Religion keeps going top 40 midweeks, and then falling short on Friday, so it would be great if it sneaked over the line today. thanks as always for the comprehensive picks nd comments! cheers! 😎
