interesting i have never ever heard or read about the plan to release her original version as a single , it did get a soft release in Japan (i think there is a vinyl - 7inch)

"WEA revealed in August 85 that the original plan for the album was to release 5 singles with "Angel" "Pretender" and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" all slated for release but the addition of "Into The Groove" along with the recent Jimmy Nail cover of the track has meant that "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" has now been scrapped as a UK single."

This is from my 1985 Gallup thread (Aug 17). I assume it comes from either record mirror or music week from the time.

Pretender as a single 😮😮😂🫢

It def worked out for the best.

featuring acts get the mention anyway so I'm fine with that even if it means Teletubbies scrape in. Jimmy Nail though, Madonna's loss is our chart gain, Aint No Doubt is fab and some of his other singles were good. Crocodile Shoes hung round the charts for a while so I guess that's why it outsold Ain't No Doubt. Cowboy Dreams was better than that one, though.

BIGGEST HIT: UNCHAINED MELODY (862,000)

Another act who hit the million on the strength of two singles. The film “Ghost” was of course responsible for the re-issue of “Unchained Melody” which turned into 1990’s best selling track, and their 1965 No 1 “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” then made the top 3 all over again before the year was out. After that they had run out of tracks that people remembered and wisely the record company thought it best to leave it there....

BIGGEST HIT: MMMBOP (712,000)

Another act who were hyped pre-release of their debut single and true enough “MMMBop” didn’t disappoint with its catchiness propelling the brothers to No 1 instantly. In truth they soon started to generate negative comments from the music press as the hits became smaller and they had fizzled out before the end of the decade.  An unexpected return to the top 10 in 2005 with “Penny & Me” proved a short lived reprieve from the dumper....

BIGGEST HIT: BRING IT ALL BACK (623,000)

One of the most important questions of 1999 was did you wanna see Bradley swing? Or Rachel do her thing? Well enough people cared enough to push the TV stars over the million mark sales wise and into our top 100 of the decade, after they got launched by Simon Fuller (former Spice Girls manager) on “Miami 7”.  Indeed Fuller formed the band after being sacked as manager for the spice’s and used the same writers for this group, and admitted later on that this is the route he would have taken with the Spice Girls had he not been fired.

They make the list on the strength of three singles and just 1999’s sales (they were actually the 6th biggest selling act of that year), the band continued until 2003 hitting the top 5 with all their releases before committing pop euthanasia and spawning moderate solo successes for the members. They’re a beautiful reminder of the pure pop era of the late 90s.

112 were always credited it on it (at the time and still on Polyhex though I see the OCC have once again played about with the credit and they have gone- Wiki and Discogs agree with me).

Just seeing anything Hanson related takes me back to being 9 years old and in Grade 3 at school with all the girls obsessed with them.

Don’t worry I still think they’re praising you. I haven’t caught on yet.

I was wondering if and when S Club 7 would show up and Steps for that matter too, but I’m guessing they’ll be featured soon.

I wasn’t sure Hanson would sneak in but glad to see them there!

BIGGEST HIT: TWIST AND SHOUT (428,000)

Starting out as successful artists in their own right, the pivotal moment came in 1991 when they teamed up and the duo was formed.  1993 was a great year for Reggae and these guys were one of the main beneficiaries pumping out 3 top 5 hits in just 6 months but as Reggae faded as a chart fad during 1994 their fortunes waned.

BIGGEST HIT: ANY DREAM WILL DO (452,000)

1989’s Biggest chart act had a much tougher 90s though he started off brightly with 5 top 10 singles in the first two years of the decade including his personal best seller “Any Dream Will Do”.  His suing of “The Face” in 1991 over claims he was gay resulted in a backlash against him, along with leaving “Neighbours” which meant that by 1992 the hits had all but dried up.  One of 17 acts that repeat from the 80s equivalent list.

NO 93. EN VOGUE (1,148,200)

13 UK TOP 40 HITS

BIGGEST HIT: DON’T LET GO (LOVE) (400,000)

The first of 6 girl groups to sell a million are En Vogue. They were fortunate to come out in 1990 and therefore had the whole decade to build up their sales as the four top 10 hits they accrued (in addition to smaller hits) took 7 years to achieve. In 1994 they duetted with Salt N Pepa on “Whatta Man”, that enabled them to make this countdown- not so for Salt N Pepa though who are locked out at No 104 on this rundown.  Originally a quartet they slimmed down to a trio in 1997 but by then their glory years were behind them.

Great to see The Righteous Brothers on the list - I'm not sure they would have done that in the 60's with just the one big hit! The greatest-ever duo vocal performance recorded for a pop record deserves recognition - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling. Nice Hanson make it too, they had a good run of pop singles and are much better than they were given credit for at the time. S Club had some great pop singles amongst the lesser stuff like their debut ditty, so that position is about right I reckon. Chaka Demus & Pliers is a surprise, but reggae getting on the list is worth it if Aswad, Bitty McLean, and other acts fall short.

Jason's about right too, he had some good singles but a lot more less-good ones. En Vogue seem under-appreciated these days, so it's good they made the list, huge in the USA though. Classy.
