So here we go then, a new rate for the forum and this time, something a little bit different!

As we all know, Steps have released MANY a cover in their time, so it only feels fair that we honour those artists who R Claire, Faye, H, Lee and Lisa stole from!

You may well know some, if not all of the original versions of the songs Steps covered. But the goal is to find out what Buzzjack’s favourite one is!

Please try and vote purely based on the merits of the original song and try not to let your love of some of Steps’ cover versions cloud your judgement!

- The bonus songs are not available on streaming so will have to be YouTubed

- The Mollie King song is a demo, and potentially a remixed version at that. I was unable to find the original version on any reputable websites but I didn’t want to exclude such an icon so here we are!

- Whilst Steps were part of the Thank ABBA For The Music single , I didn’t want this to turn this into a glorified ABBA rate therefore, I chose not to include these.

If this rate is a success, there may be a part 2 featuring album tracks as there’s plenty of those too!

I know most of these but many were "original" Steps songs for me upon hearing them so it will be interesting to listen to those which I have not!

Also I had NO idea Here and Now was a cover!!!!

I think their version is really POOR, Steps certainly brought this one to life! 🥰

08 Bee Gees - Tragedy

A great song in both versions, again I prefer Steps because it has a little more bass, I'd rate Steps version a 9.

08 Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson - I Know Him So Well

I love this song anyway, it's gorgeous in all forms. Steps is pretty much a carbon copy so would also rate it an 8.

10 Kylie Minogue - Better The Devil You Know

Utterly love this one, it's one of my fave Kylie songs. For some reason, although I like the Steps one, I have never rated their version that high, I'm not so sure why? Something just doesn't quite click for me, however when they perform it live, I love it!? I'd rate theirs about 7.

08 Diana Ross - Chain Reaction

Another one where I prefer the original to the cover, think I'd rate their version a 6 or 7.

05 Bananarama - Last Thing On My Mind

A bit boring comparing it to Steps version. It’s missing a certain ‘umph’ for me. Steps took it to another level and is a 9.5/10 for me.

07 Bee Gees - Tragedy

I don’t mind both versions. Not a fan of the high voices in the original though. That’s why I rank Steps version a bit higher, around 8/10 for now.

03 Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson - I Know Him So Well

Not a fan, sorry not sorry..

09 Kylie Minogue - Better The Devil You Know

This song embodies everything I love about Kylie. Fun, cheese and upbeat ❤️ Steps didn’t put their own stamp on it and the production feels a bit dated so around a 6.5 for me.

08 Diana Ross - Chain Reaction

Both versions are not bad but also lack something for me personally. I enjoy the original more though, the cover is around a 7.5/10.

7.5 Benny Andersson Band - Story Of A Heart

Sounds a bit dated but I enjoy this version a bit more. I don’t mind the Steps one, I expected a bit more so a 6.5/10.

06 Delta Goodrem - Dancing With A Broken Heart

A bit dated and clunky. The same for the Steps version.

07 Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes

Not bad, Steps just made it their own and is a lot better in my opinion (10/10).

07 Five Star - The Slightest Touch

The production sounds a bit dated. Steps didn’t do too much, but their version is a bit fresher. So a 8.5/10 to me.

5.5 VINCINT - Hard 2 Forget

Both versions are a ‘mwah’..

6.5 Worlds Apart - Here and Now

Not bad, a bit dated as well. Steps version sounds better, an 8/10 for me. Especially with Claire her vocals.

Inoffensive pop. I enjoy the Steps one more, again Claire her vocals are giving it more body so a 8.5/10 for me.

07 Benny Andersson Band - Story Of A Heart - I enjoyed this more than I thought I would to be fair. I do prefer Steps version but I have a real soft spot for it, (possibly helped by the fact I heard the Steps one first).

05 Delta Goodrem - Dancing With A Broken Heart - Agree with Lee it's a bit clunky, same for Steps version. Steps again maybe just clinch the favourite version here, again maybe helped by hearing their version first.

07 Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes (will listen to) - Again a pleasant bop! Steps definitely elevated this to a 10/10 track though!

08 Five Star - The Slightest Touch (will listen to) - Boppy and on a similar level to the Steps version, I'd probs rate that 8.5 so again just about stealing the win.

03 VINCINT - Hard 2 Forget (will listen to) - This is rubbish, but then so is the Steps version. Easy 2 Forget thankfully. 🤭

06 Worlds Apart - Here and Now (will listen to) - Nice enough, Steps totally elevated it though to a 9 /10.

07 Mollie King - In The Dark (To The Beat Of My Heart)  (will listen to) - Boppy and on a similar level to Steps. I'd say I prefer Steps due to vocals being superior but would also rate theirs a 7 tbf.

Delta’s original Dancing With A Broken Heart is superior to Steps cover. Though neither are a favourite of mine.

When I re-listened to them to them all at the weekend, I was looking forward to the delta one coming on (as I enjoyed it at the time) but I must admit it left me a little whelmed!

Though I do agree that it’s still far superior to the steps version!

I love me some Delta but her version of Dancing didn’t age that well for me. Though I prefer that one.

It’s also the make-up that puts me a little of in the Steps video.
