Novelty songs aren't so popular these days, but at one time you could find them all over the radio dial. Novelty songs were humorous, and sometimes VERY bizarre.

Some were ok others were utter drivel, you decide. Some that come to mind are

Loving You Has Made Me Bananas? By Guy Marks'

Yellow Submarine by The Beatles

My Ding a ling by Chuck Berry

Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport by Rolf Harris

Ernie by Benny Hill

Which ones did you like or hate?

There was of course ''Shaddup Your Face'' by Joe Dolce that kept Vienna by Ultravox off the top of the charts in 1981  And other novelty records that reached #1 were Mr Blobby's "Mr. Blobby" and the Tellytubbies' "Say Eh-oh"

wurzels............... 'combine harvester' was a superb comedy pop song, oo arr oo arr...lol.

timelords.......... 'doctorin the tardis', brilliant p take using clever samples

the worst are the kids c**p... blobby, bob, telletubbies...

Some weren't necessarily supposed to be novelty I think. I really like 'Save Your Love' by Renee and Renato.

then again people have been buying Mika

Star Trecking.

what was it really called? I can only remember the Line that went,

"Star trekking across the universe only going forward cause we can't find reverse"

Star Trekkin' by The Firm. A number one in 1987 if I'm not mistaken and helped along by its low budget plasticene model video.

Here's a couple from the memory banks:

Monster Mash-Bobby 'Boris' Pickett (may have the artist wrong)

Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer ( seem to have forgotten the artist of this one)

Of course, I really enjoy 'Doctorin the Tardis', by A History of the Jams, aka The Timelords, as I am a big fan of the show Doctor Who...

EDIT: I seem to have remembered the artist for Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, it was by Elmo and Patsy, IIRC. :w00t:

You're right, it was Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers
You probably know this, but The Timelords were The KLF under a different name and had originally been called The Jams (or Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu to give them their full name)

Bobby "Boris" Pickett died of leukaemia last month, aged 69. The Boris part of his name was a reference to the fact that he performed in the style of Boris Karloff.

If its by Bill Drummond surely it shouldnt be classed as a novelty records because no doubt that manuel book thing of his classes it as part of a bigger art type project (however dont know where this puts the pipettes who have mentioned that they have read this before forming and the sheilas who are obv a novelty pipettes  and those KLF hits which are not a good as Scooter)

however this tune might have come from Eberneeeezer Good???

btw would Walter Werzowa's greatest hit be bring me edelweiss or the intel bong

i always considered klf as bordering novelty, but more satirical then ordinary comedy.

actually id class motorheads 'ace of spades' in a similar vein ... it was a total pisstake of their own fans of the time(1980), who were also parodied on 'the young ones'... 'i dont care if i live or die me'...

nah man! that is a great record and has just been on the hits. quality man!!!

btw now playing is Def Lep's pour some sugar on me. now thats novelty for you!!! Let's Get Rocked now thats funny!!!

trust me, good though it is, 'the ace of spades' lampoons early 80's rock fans (bikers) summut chronic, to their credit they laughed along with the joke.

and Let's Get Rocked???

(this might be because the video is so totally bad. i was laughing at this so much. also i was in a fit of giggles when i saw this video's attempt at combining film stock with this dude's song perfomance when it came on the original buck fizz cheesy 50 the other day!!!

lets get rocked was shyte man... motorhead catred for the first generation rocker... the biker, long hair, denim cut offs over leather jackets, dirty, greasy, 'hard' ... unlike 'lets get rocked' clean, big haired, spandex, mor... aor... i dont think it meant to be funny! lol.

yeah but when you see it for the first time god knows how many years after it was current it is very funny. dont know if it was on the original bucks fizz's cheesy countdown but it should have been.

also i came half way through into this judas priest video on thie hits and this was also funny, but not as funny as the def lep vid

maybe the darkness should be classed as novelty as well

What about the Spitting Image one?

I've just had that record on this morning as it was the first song recorded on one of the hits summer holiday or cheesy song countdown. have to say that record is total $h!t not falling into the so bad its good category/so bad its cheesy.

this probs because spitting image like 2dtv and HIGNFY was a satire programme and so no doubt is existance was to take the piss out of these kind of novelty records. so if it is so totally knowing in its sarcasm it's total $h!t as a proper novelty has to be a genius work of insanity (perhaps) probs by some bonkers dude in Hamburg and have no sarcastic overtones.

note: on the other hand Vanilla's No Way No Way is shit because it is shit
