Arctic Monkeys Slam Hip Hop And Radio 1

BBC 6 Music News

Arctic Monkeys have launched an attack on various subjects in an interview with The Sun newspaper, insulting Radio 1 and hip hop.

Guitarist Jamie Cook says: "English radio is terrible, and Radio 1 plays a lot of c**p music. I realised that the other morning when I had the radio going."

In a bizarre comment, which doesn't really make much sense when you consider the first sentence, Cook adds his thoughts on current hip hop:

"Even music I don't usually listen to, like hip-hop, is obviously bad at the moment. There is no real hip-hop any more."

Vocalist Alex Turner then added, "Timbaland is in every video. He is just standing there looking confused."

Before adding, "I hate all those Pop Idol singers. And let me tell you what I can't stand that f***ing R n' B cover of (Mark Ronson's) Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before."

Arctic Monkeys release new single Brianstorm on April 16th, with album Favourite Worst Nightmare due a week later on April 23rd.

Do you agree with their opinion of Radio 1 or not?

Well I don't gree with them on Radio1. I know it gets a lot of stick and I agree it does play a bit of c**p but I like it.

I agree with them on Hip-Hop though, there's no real hip-hop about at the moment and even big hip-hop starts like Nas realise this at the moment, but well i'm not really a fan on hip-hop so it not being around at the moment doesn't really bother me.

They're right about Hip-Hop ^_^ but not about Mark Ronson and not quite about Radio 1.
I don't agree with the Mark Ronson comment either. I think it's a great remix of it and by the looks of it a lot of people think the same about it as well.
They seem pissed off  Well, there's nothing wrong about expressing your opinions, and their current opinion is that they think Radio 1 and hip-hop/RnB is c**p at the moment :P It's just their point of view.

RADIO 1’s CHRIS MOYLES agrees with ARCTIC MONKEYS — his station does play cr*p music.

I revealed yesterday how Monkeys ALEX TURNER and JAMIE COOK have been slagging off the nation’s favourite broadcaster.

Moyles chipped in with his views on the subject during his breakfast show yesterday.

He told listeners: “Jamie said English radio is terrible. I agree. And Radio 1 plays a load of cr*p music!â€

But the lardy DJ must have got a slap from producers and did a quick U-turn.

He added: “I think Radio 1 does play a lot of cr*p, but I will explain my outrageous statement. We play a lot of new music, you’re not going to like everything. A lot of the stuff on the playlist I don’t like, it’s not my thing.

“If you only liked R&B and listened to a station that only plays R&B, there’s going to be some R&B you don’t like.â€

I’m sure he’d have had a go at the Monkeys if Radio 1 didn’t have a tribute day, Arctic Monday, on April 16.

But Chris did kindly offer his own version of events for my column. He said: “Tiny singer Alex Turner was crying last night into his Yorkshire bitter after Radio 1’s Aled said his trousers are too old for him.

“Alex, 21, said, ‘They’re hand-me-downs from my older brother, what am I meant to do? It’s grimmer up north.’â€

He has a point to be honest... Maybe he could've expressed it a wee bit better and with more coherence, but in general he's right.. And Moyles' about turn with double back somersault was truly pathetic... Obviously, the Stalinist controllers at Radio 1 'had a word'....

As for Rap/Hip Hop - spot on.. Long gone are the days of Public Enemy, Ice T, Ice Cube, Gang Starr, NWA, Wu Tang, etc, when Rap was an exciting, challenging genre.... To be replaced by, what...? 50 fukkin' Cent???? Eminem???? GAWD!!!!!!

On all the forums i've seen that this topic isn't posted on they all seem to be having a go at the Arctic's comments and saying they're too big for their boots etc etc. The thing is though they do speak some truth. The state of hip-hop is terrible at the moment. We have some loon named 50 Cent who thinks it's fun to get shot and then go and make a film about it. Sets a real bad example to all the people that listen to his music and look up to him.

FULL truth mate.. The guy's a moron.. Public Enemy's Chuck D was spot on in his criticism of acts like 50 Cent as well... Basically saying, that Black people fought to free themselves from being called n***ers and now people like 50 Cent just glorify it and glorify violence...

Precisley. Even though i'm not a great fan of hip-hop acts like Run DMC and Wu Tang Clan, gave hip-hop a good name, now all that hard work has been run off by the Eminem, 50 Cent etc. I mean Fiddy even created a computer game on all shootings and crime etc. I know the GTA series is like that, but it's all using fictional charachters, unlike Fiddy's game which uses actual rappers that young kids look up to and because they think it's alright to go selling drugs and shooting people some kids think it's alright to do exactly the same.

Yeah, I mean "GTA" is a slightly different story, you have this level of detatchment because the characters are all fictional, and the fact that the timeline for the games is usually in the past (Vice City is 80s, San Andreas, early 90s..), so it's more stylised, if you get my meaning...

hmm i bet the next type of music they will bash is pop music

and says how bad it has gotten lately blah blah blah

I don't think they'll do that. Even though they act like they don't, I think they have a secret thing for Pop music, I mean I don't think anyone was expecting them to cover Love Machine!

I realise that a lot of artists work with Timbaland at the moment but personally I think that's because he's the best producer around, he's managed to turn quite a few artists careers around for them and let's be fair about it, which other hip-hop producer would be able to make such a great track with Fall Out Boy because their genres are that dis-similar?

Well, they'd be correct in that assessment as well...

It's pretty pathetic when you need to resort to going to a producer to save your arse though... If you dont have the requisite confidence in your own abilities and material, well, then I reckon it's time to get out the game if you ask me....

Everyone's just jumping on this 'Timbaland' bandwagon... There's just something not right about it... Fair dos for him though, he's laughing his ass off all the way to the bank....

They're right to be slamming Hip Hop, well the American stuff is really bad, no originality at all, it's just about who's had the most brushes with the law. 50 Cent has to be one of the worst rappers/lyricists EVER

There is exceptions though with Eminem and Kanye West. In fact Kanye West struggled to get a proper record deal for years because nobody would touch him as an artist as he wasn't gangster enough

British Hip Hop doesn't get enough praise though, but for some reason we'd rather listen to Americans :(

Kanye West is no favourite rapper, okay he has an ego the size of China, but still it just adds to his personality and he's definiltey one of the best rappers out there at the moment even if there isn't that much competition.

I've not heard much British hip-hop but from what i've heard it's quite good. Dizzee Rascal is very good at what he does but he doesn't get that much praise even though he's FAR better than people like 50 Cent and his lyrics mean something and aren't all about going to a candy shop or shooting some person.
