Posted April 12, 200718 yr Well there is a very simple reason: When bands start to get alot of radio and tv exposure everyone jumps on the bandwagon and even teenpoppers join in. For example i was really into Fall Out boy and My Chemical Romance when they were first out and noone had heard of them. Then after FOB had released 'Sugar...' and 'Dance Dance',everyone claimed to be massive fans even though they had only heard 2 songs so basically it became uncool to like them. Then MCR had brillant tunes like 'Helena' and 'i'm Not okay' and did well in the charts but not brillant. Now when they released 'Welcome to the black parade' they had to turn mainstream to get sucess. Furthermore even my friend who never listens to bands like them wanted to buy the new FOB single and MCR new single is dire. It pisses me off cause i have went right off the 2 bands. Does anyone else hate when a band sells out ? Edited April 12, 200718 yr by FallPanicBoyApparatus

Does anyone else hate when a band sells out ? That's pretty much how I felt when everyone and their dog started to get into Nirvana.... Luckily Kurt Cobain was just as uneasy about it as the real fans were, and he went and did "In Utero" (a pretty anti-commercial statement...) after "Nevermind" - best album Nirvana did... Then, the silly sod went and killed himself.... In the case of MCR, it's really only parts of the first album that I can actually bear to listen to... They're just such whores now, totally worthless... Fall Out Boy I have never shown an interest in....
April 13, 200718 yr We do all on some level hate it when that happends, I wouldn't say it's enough to put you off the band but it means you won't go to see them live cos of all the young 'uns screaming every two seconds. That puts me off. Edited April 13, 200718 yr by Daylight Dancer
April 13, 200718 yr I used to be like this, but at the same time hoping your favourite band doesn't succeed isn't very good.
April 13, 200718 yr "Thall shalt not stop liking a band just because they’ve become popular. " It's a rubbish song but it makes some good points! ^_^
April 13, 200718 yr "I'm Not Ok" sounds far more commercial to me than "The Black Parade". To paraphrase Morrissey, "We hate it when our bands become successful".
April 13, 200718 yr If there is one thing I hate about music it's people who are like this about it  What difference does it make if a band you like is successful or not to you liking them? If you like a band's music then why should them being 'commericial' and 'successful' make you not like them? And the words 'sell out' irritate me more than anything well SORRY if other people discover that they like a band in the same that you do or they decide to change their sound when you'd complain that they sound exactly the same if they did the same thing again anyway -_- Me personally I'm the opposite and when I discover a band I WANT them to become successful, it's good to be able to find out about a band and then tell your friends about them to see if they like them and for other people to like them, surely it's good people have the same taste as you? I've made so many friends because of liking the same music and going to gigs with them and I've got so many things to boast about like following the Ordinary Boys from the very start and chatting to them before they released a single and meeting Ricky Wilson from Kaiser Chiefs and me and my mate congratulated him on his 'top 66 hit' and now look at them! There are bands I like that are very uncommercial and are unlikely to ever be very big but if they change their sound then I don't care as long as I like it and if I don't then I don't call them 'sell outs' because they decided they wanted to explore different sounds but they take a risk of having snobs who DO say that when they do however.

That puts me off. Referring to HIM there maybe...? Yeah, I remember that when I went to their gig a couple of years back in Hammersmith, loads and loads of 14-year olds totally packing the place, most being absolutely terrified of support band Cathedral....
April 13, 200718 yr Very good points indeed. If you must be elitist then you'd be better choosing bands other than Fall Out Boy and MCR who are bound to appeal to a wider audience. One thing to note though is that bands can often become complacent, lazy and c**p once they've made it. You need look no further than Oasis for proof of that. Not liking Oasis any more does not necessarily make you an elitist - more a music fan than anything else.
April 13, 200718 yr look no further than Oasis for proof of that. Not liking Oasis any more does not necessarily make you an elitist - more a music fan than anything else. I agree with that.. They've sounded the same ALL of their career thus they ran out of songs by the third album and so I don't like them after that because well it's just c**p.. I don't like the music at all because it's just boring  Then again they had some very naff lyrics before that anyway so they were hardly a band who I really connect to that much anyway.

Totally agree mate, Oasis, to me, just gave up trying when they were being fellated by the NME every five minutes....
April 13, 200718 yr I want bands I like to become RELATIVELY successful but not too much. Every band I've ever liked when they were first around made music I really wanted to listen to, they get found and now make boring, bland tripe! That's what pisses me off! I think Razorlight are the best case in point. I still think "Up All Night" is one of the decade's best albums. Yet I don't think I've heard a WORSE album than "Razorlight" :manson:
April 13, 200718 yr Strange - I thought Razorlight were awful from the word go, but definitely moreso now that they've become a Radio 2 flagship band.

April 13, 200718 yr I was an MCR fan as soon as they released 'I'm Not Okay,' but tbh it doesn't really bother me too much about when fans got into them because I still think they're a good band despite the amount of exposure they now get. :D Another good example of this is Green Day because when they released 'American Idiot,' they got a lot of bandwagon jumpers but I had been a fan since before then, the band's probably don't intend to get as sucessful as they do half of the time but obviously they would've wanted it aswell. Which is kinda weird, cos "American Idiot" is by far GD's most challenging, ambitious and uncommercial album by a mile.... I mean, no WAY would they have had the guts to attempt to release a single that was 8 minutes long and had three different component parts in the past.... I reckon the GD 'bandwagon' jumpers were in fact folks like me who heard the first cuts off "American Idiot" and thought "FUKKIN' HELL, they're finally doing proper Punk..."
April 14, 200718 yr A lot of people only got American Idiot just to say they've got it. I didn't go around shouting about it... Most of my mates would've probably just said "Fukkin' hell, man, what did you buy that for....?"  Ironically, I bet most of them have secretly bought it too....

April 14, 200718 yr Shame everyone seems to love 'Wake Up When September Ends' and 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' though - two of the worst songs Green Day have ever done.
