Neck-stabbing boy 'wanted jail'

Auguste Jury was injured in the throat

A 15-year-old boy who stabbed a great-grandmother because he wanted to be jailed has been given an indeterminate sentence.

Auguste Jury, 79, was left with a 4in knife embedded in her throat after the attack on her doorstep in Anfield Court, Kenton, Newcastle, in November.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was told he must serve at least two years and seven months.

He had pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Just five days before the attack on Mrs Jury, the teenager had received a six-month referral order from Newcastle Youth Court for stabbing his 14-year-old friend.

No motive

He denied regretting that attack and said he would do it again.

Later he said: "Social workers are no good for me. They have not done anything for me. Custody is the only thing for me."

Newcastle Crown Court told there was no motive for the attack on Mrs Jury apart from his desire to be jailed.

He had said his stepfather told him prison was a good place to be and he would have status there.

Experts said the teenager suffered from a sociopathic personality disorder linked to autism.

'A great mistake'

Outside court, Mrs Jury's daughter, Rosemarie Hyland, said she was pleased with the sentence and hoped the boy would now get the help he so desperately needed.

She said: "He is a young lad who has made a great mistake.

"We have spoken to the police and the position is that at some point the boy may get to meet my mother with his mother."

Mrs Hyland added that although her mother had recovered physically she was unable to go out alone and was nervous of strangers.

She said: "Mother is very upset but she did want to come here today. She has been brilliant about it."

I really worry for this country sometimes :(

That is ridiculous :manson: :manson: :manson: and why the fukk was he not charged with attempted murder ? stab someone in the throat that is attempted murder IMHO

If he is released again he WILL kill someone

The judiciary in this country is fast becoming a joke and a sick one at that, they just don't live in the real world

Attempted murder in this country should be 15-20 years in jail and murder should be LIFE with no prospect of release unless new evidence is provided that proves innocence

depends upon the circumstances tbh... people do change, im not the same person i was ten years ago and would hate to be treated as such... the sentance should be much harsher, but we dont know if it was a stupid stunt or he is a total nut job! nut jobs should be treated really much harsher.

Even if it was a stupid stunt it put someones life at risk and he has to face the consequences.

Well its the second stupid stunt he did then because he also stabbed a 14 year old boy

In this case, he needs to be punished, but he also needs psychiatric help to prevent him ever doing this again. Broadly, I agree though, that sentencing of life cases needs to be looked at. How on earth can a life sentence be 10 years or so <_<

i think thats the main point, crims/nutters/offenders need help to get them off whatever crime they do..

tbh i think locking them up and throwing away the key is pretty archaic, although atm we as a civilisation havnt yet developed the means to 'cure' offenders. as i see it, people act upon inherant traits, brought out by environmental circumstances. a major step foreward in the human race would be to be able to identify and cure the trait.

until then, locking them up is the only option... (in a way they are victims too, victims of their own traits)

Prison should be there as a punishment, if they are mentally ill then treat them in a secure hospital but prison should be a punishment and a tough harsh environment that will make offenders too $h!t scared to ever go back, basic standards of bedding, food and exercise as laid down by the Geneva Convention and nothing else, just a harsh fearful existence for their sentence so they accept prison for what it should be a PUNISHMENT instead of the easy life it is now

missing the bigger point...

its not a case of being 'mentally ill' but a case on acting wthin the constraints of the inherant traits you are born with. you dont ask for these 'tastes', they are there and some become manifest depending upon the environment you are in. if you cant help having a violent urge towards rape, punishing you wont help!... (but thats all thats on offer now). if that urge can be identified and cured surely that would be better all round. after all.. once a rapeist has served his sentance then hes free... but still has that trait within him that could make him strike again.

not everyone in every circumstance is able to supress 'wrong' traits in their persona... hence crime is committed.

I still think that society deserves protection from those who possess those traits though, until a 100% foolproof system can be bought in to cure them of those traits then prison is the only viable solution and in the case of people who commit serious offences such as murder and rape then I think prison for the rest of their natural lives is the only solution that is going to protect the general public. I would most definitely include rape in offences which carry a natural whole life tariff
