Can’t talk about reggae without mentioning Bob Marley & the Wailers. They had some great songs, like

No woman no cry, Exodus, Jamming, Is this love, Could you be loved, Buffalo Soldier, One love and Iron lion zion.

Although he died in 1981 he is still the most recognised face of reggae music.

Other artists of the 60/70's included

Desmond Dekker - The Israelites, You can get it if you really want

Jimmy Cliff - Wonderful world, beautiful people and Wild world

Johnny Nash - I can see clearly now

The Upsetters, Black Uhuru and Peter Tosh also contributed to a degree.

The Police and UB40 have used a watered down reggae to create their sound with great success.

then again i think you can, you could talk about loads of ska, rocksteady, roots, dancehall etc etc acts here man not just the obv bob marley albums (and if you want bring in other stuff like the calypso of the late young tiger!!!).

how about people like Toots, yellowman, beenie man, Lord Tanamo, prince buster, the skalittles, horace andy, ethiopians, mighty diamonds, Coxsone Dodd, steal pulse, culture, Jackie Mittoo, dave and ansel collins (double barrel now thats one hell of a tune!!!) etc etc

The Trojan stuff is top notch.

I find it hard to listen to reggae now, though, especially after the Rastafari faith has been exposed as such a backward awful sham..... peace and love? Err......

i dont like the rasta connections as russ says.... but there are a few early ska hits and reggae hits that were great. my fav being harry j all stars 'liquidator'... brilliant track , superb baseline
Tskm no-one's mentioned King Tubby and, especially, Max Romeo (listen to 'War Inna Babylon' now everybody!) yet.

I got a 9 CD Trojan box set for £6 in Fopp the other day (and it all kosher stuff as the whole cat is owned by Sanctuary these days). I might have many of the tracks on other Trojan boxsets but for that price. bring it on!!!

yeah man! liquidator is an awesome tune!!!

well dude as i said there's so many artists to choose from not only the ones that might get daytime airplay on commercial gold stations. and as well as king tubby dont think noone has mentioned Lee Scratch Perry and his black ark studios.

btw talking bout Max Romeo  War Inna Babylon wasnt the first tune that came to mind when that name was mentioned

and also think you have to mention that production powerhouse Sly And Robbie, even tho some of their fine riddims might have been ruined by complete tossers (see below   )

also get some Jetstar classic albums as well!!! some great riddims!!!

Yes, I know. THAT tune is on the album too.

Anyone reading this who doesn't understand, get a copy of War Inna Babylon and listen to the song 'I Chase The Devil'.

I don't listen to it usually but lately I've been listening to Bob Marley and the Wailers (of course :D ) I'm just in that kind of mood..

I can listen to reggae only during summer :/ and it's HOT here now!!! To be honest, I'm not familiar with other reggae names...

No woman no cry  Three little birds  Could you be loved  Get up stand up  Is this love  ... all great songs

I've seen UB40 live. Didn't want to go and didn't really enjoy it.

The support was the Wailers (or Wailer, I think most of them are dead) and the bass went right through me.

I actually quite like this one, you might have seen the film it's from. talk about guilty pleasures!!!!  thats a 'Titanic' sized one*

*Obv not to be confused with Celine Dion

Quite right. This was reggae at it's best

Acts such as Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Tony Tribe, Maytals, Soul Sisters, Versatiles, Harry J, Greyhound, Bruce Ruffin, Rudies, Derrick Harriot, Kingstonians, G.G. Allstars, Zap-Pow, Susan Cadogan, Max Romeo and many more.

Also IMO only second best to Bob Marley was Prince Buster.

The so-called reggae of recent times such as that by Sean Paul and Shaggy is utter rubbish.

Anyone remember the first reggae single to hit the UK charts. It was My Boy Lollipop by Mille Small UK & US#2 in 1964.

The re-issue in 1987 reached #46

She had 3 smaller hits in 1964/5 - Sweet William #30 - Bloodshot Eyes #48 - Oh Henry (which bubbled under). This song was about a dog.

Quite a few reggae singles were banned by the BBC mainly for sexual reasons.

There was the imitation reggae of Judge Dread of which all of his singles were never played because of there sex connotations.

Max Romeo - Wet Dream #10 in 1969

Max Romeo - Mini Skirt Mini - 1969

Max Romeo - Sixpence - 1975

Soul Sisters - Wreck A Buddy - 1969

Versatiles - Push It In - 1969

Prince Buster - Big Five

Prince Buster - Ten Commandments - 1968 - degrading to women

Jimmy Cliff's follow-up to Wonderful World Beautiful People called Vietnam was banned at the time for obvious reasons. It peaked at #46.

i remember millie 'my boy lolipop' on totp... first edition?.. but she handed out lolipops to the audience.

i remember doing an exam in the hot summer of '70, the classroom windows open and the sounds of max romeo clearly filling the room of 13 year olds... " lie down girl let me push it up , push it up"...lol.. (it was released a year before)....

i never rated bob marley though... rasta was the biggest load of bollox ever to be called 'religion'.

Never been much of a reggae fan. However, nobody who takes music seriously can deny the genius of Bob Marley.

As for bands influenced by reggae, don't forget The Clash.

yeah but is it only that style of dancehall reggae you dont like? how about people like Elephant Man, Sizzla, Capleton, Buju Banton and Beenie Man.

personally Get Busy is one of my fave records of all time. should be up there with all the reggae greats not only the more traditional roots stuff.

Jimmy Saville should cover this for Christmas, would be a smash hit!!!!
