The second one wasn't offered as an official alternative. It was put forward as an alternative by someone on the BBC News website. In a separate survey, it was the clear winner over a number of other alternatives. If I'd known about the survery, I'd have voted for it as well. It's far better than the official one and has been designed without any pretentious rubbish about what it's supposed to mean. It's just a good, stylish logo. Sadly, it's probably too late for the organisers to admit their mistake and adopt this alternative. Whoever designed it would probably be happy to accept a fee well short of 400 grand.
