Posted June 12, 200718 yr Tesco is reducing the amount of space it allocates to DVDs in response to shifting trends and customer demand, the supermarket giant has confirmed. The reduction in DVD space is being introduced at the same time that the grocery chain is to scrap the CD single, as customers move towards downloads instead. “There’s no point offering CDs and DVDs if we’re not getting the sales and there’s not the demand for it,” the company said. “Tesco is very good at listening to customers and obviously we monitor what they want and what they are buying and tailor what’s on the shelves accordingly. “We’re stopping selling CD singles because there isn’t the demand for them there was a few years ago. Customers are wanting to download more, and that to an extent is the same with DVDs. It’s very much responding to customer needs and changing with the times.” The space gained by the move is likely to be taken by more “modern” offers including the Apple Zone recently trialled at the chain’s Milton Keynes store. “We’ve now got them in several stores and are planning to roll out further,” the company added. “We have a dedicated area to Apple where staff have been trained by Apple to give customers specific and specialist information on those products. “Customers want to talk about various new technological products which five years ago they wouldn’t. It’s very much a case of constantly moving and changing with the times to accommodate what our customers’ shopping list might be.” It was not clear whether the reduction would follow a set format across the business or be considered on an individual store basis. ======================================== Another blow to the single market, first Asda, now Tesco, whatever next Woolies
June 12, 200718 yr Ahh well. i dont buy singles anyway lol and my tesco stopped selling singles years ago so not really gonna affect me. its a shame though. Edited June 12, 200718 yr by MikeyJosh
June 12, 200718 yr Didn't they announce this about a month ago? I think that was Asda. I didn't even know Tesco sold singles
June 12, 200718 yr Didn't Tesco get rid of them before Asda? I'm quite annoyed about it though, only HMV left now.
June 12, 200718 yr my tesco has never sold singles....except for the x factor winners single... DON'T GET ME STARTED! lol!!! no wonder they get a no1 if they sell singles where no other singles are for sale!
June 12, 200718 yr yea, last time i saw a single in tesco was the prodigy back in 2001 i think!! so not a major blow, but if woolies stop selling htem than ill start worrying because them and hmv are the big single sellers
June 12, 200718 yr Tesco stooped years ago! It was in the Asda report i think! This apple part sounds interesting though..... !
June 12, 200718 yr I think HMV will continue selling singles until they stop making them, I love collecting singles, I prefer having a 'physical' copy of a song instead of a file on my PC
June 13, 200718 yr ^same. a file can be deleted easily but a CD doesnt How true - and what happens if a file corrupts or the computer goes faulty and can't be booted up and the hard drive need reformatting and Windows need re-installing. Unless you've got the backed up on guess what (a cd or dvd) you're stuffed.
June 13, 200718 yr The physical single will be virtually extinct in 5 years. Atleast the charts will be more accurate as a result anyway!
June 13, 200718 yr My Tesco hasn't sold singles in years, it sounds about the same everywhere else. I think this is just a ploy to get the chain in the news after Asda announced they would stop selling single
June 14, 200718 yr Didn't Tesco get rid of them before Asda? I'm quite annoyed about it though, only HMV left now. To me, it's a chicken & egg situation : they take them off the cshleves in some stores, *then* claim they aren't selling. HTF *can* they sell if they aren't available for people to buy? I much prefer CD singles, and dread the day when even specialist record stores like Virgin & HMV stop carrying them. There have already been 3 singles this year that I *would* have bought, but couldn't, because they weren't out on CD. :(
June 14, 200718 yr There is STILL a market for c.d. singles, the companies just dont want to bother. <_<
June 14, 200718 yr Its on Ceefax that Ash are planning to just release singles and are not releasing any more albums. What i'm not sure is that these singles are gonna have a phycial copy or not

We, and Will himself, fully expected and were looking forward to a tour DVD only to be told it wasn't "cost effective" :arrr: Edited June 14, 200718 yr by munchkin
