Thousands of motorists with large cars will soon have to pay hundreds of pounds to park outside their house.

Councils across London are pressing ahead with a sliding scale of charges for residential parking permits that penalises owners of fuel-hungry vehicles.

Richmond was the first to push through a swingeing £300 levy on gas-guzzlers and 4x4s earlier this year.

Now other authorities are planning to do the same as the green lobby piles on the pressure for tougher measures against motorists.

From the beginning of next month, Hackney residents with cars that have engines bigger than four litres (producing around 350g/km of carbon dioxide emissions) will have to pay £207.50 a year - compared with £80 now.

These include the BMW 745 and Hummer.

Owners of smaller cars under 1200cc - such as some models of Volkswagen Polo, Ford Focus and Nissan Micra - and hybrids such as the Toyota Prius, much loved by environmentally conscious MPs, will be charged only £41.50.

Will it make any difference?

Gas guzzling 4x4's should be BANNED except for farmers and off road people

I have no sympathy with anyone who drives these VILE monstrosities

I totally agree with this.. There are way too many cars, especially these fukkin' SUVs, on the streets of London particularly, causing nothing but misery, delays, congestion and adding to the pollution problem which affects overall health a damn sight more than smoking does if you ask me... I'm with Craig on this, ban these bloody "Chelsea Tractors" to anyone except farmers, the armed forces and search and rescue people....
I hate how people with massive fukkoff Range Rovers and $h!te always say they need it because they have loads of kids, it annoys me even greater when it's to take them to school - make the lazy gits WALK! You can have a big car without it having to be a huge gas guzzlig 4x4! Something like a Zafira. That seats 7 and isn't as big as most of the $h!te they all drive. <_<

They probably could walk to school if it wasn't for the fact that in most cases parents dont actually send their kids to the local school that's five or ten minutes walk down the road, but one that's bloody miles away and is perceived to be 'better' because it happens to be two or three places ahead in the sodding league tables.... And then the kids who live in THAT area cant actually get to the schools in their own neighbourhoods because too many people from outside are coming in.... SO, even MORE traffic problems.... <_< Going to the school in MY LOCAL area was good enough for me way back when, and we didn't have any sodding "league tables" either....

They should walk

I used to have to walk mile and half every day there and mile and a half back, was good exercise but because The Sun and Daily Mail have convinced every parent in the country that there is an abductor/rapist/p**** or whatever on every street corner kids are not getting the exercise they should be and are driven everywhere and wrapped in cotton wool :manson: and fed on junk food and given a PS3 so they dont have to play football in the street/park like we used to

Is it any wonder there is a child obesity crisis

Well put mate... It's a fact that over 90% of child abuse occurs in the family home by a family member or friend of the family, the myth of the "p**** lurking behind ever bush" is one of the biggest lies ever propogated, and the whole "stranger danger" campaign only alerted people to about 10% of the over-all problem of child abuse... I dont believe for a minute that there are any more predatory paedophiles now than there were 20/30 years ago when I was a nipper and playing footie in the park with my mates....

Tbh I wouldn't want my kids to walk a mile and a half to school everyday, I would worry about their safety.

It's probably easy to say 'they can walk' if you don't have kids, but if you did I bet you'd think differently.

Then again, I'd send them to a school near where we live anyway, so there wouldn't be that problem.

But what would be the problem Lucy ?

You walk to school and have never been attacked by a guy behind a bush, I walked to school and never had any safety problems at all or anything, walking to school is good exercise for kids

Having lived through the late 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and now this decade I have seen precious little evidence that things are any less safe now than they were then

A child is dozens more times more likely to be abused by an uncle, brother, parent, friend of the family or whatever than by a random stranger

Yeah but it only takes me 10 minutes to get there. I know walking is good exercise, I probably won't even have a car so they would have to walk.

I just wouldn't feel right letting them walk all that way, maybe it's just me though? I do worry alot.

If you are like a natural worrier etc then the best thing to do is follow your heart and do what you think is right for your kids, If I had kids I would personally let them walk etc but if you do like worry and so on then what you plan sounds the best way really.

We live in the London Borough of Newham and there's no resident parking charge.Wouldn't mind paying the £41.50 as then we'd have our own parking space outside our house. Now we rarely can park, have to go right down the road. It's even worse when West Ham are at home.

Brilliant post.

Lots of towns/villages now have a 'walking bus' too.

Put kids/people back on the street and Britain will be a safer place.

tbh i see this as just another excuse to extract money from drivers. ok, i dont have much sympathy for 4x4's , but i dont think itll make much difference to congestion... theyll just pay and continue..

but kids should walk, if its a 'safe' route (the only thing that has changed since the 60's is the ammount of traffic on the roads). i walked a mile to and from school, others walked further... AND home for dinner! we thought NOTHING of walking it, in rain and snow (in the 60's we had plenty of snow).

i dont think theres any more (%wise) paedos now then in the 60's, (moors murderers) however i do think there is a much greater awareness of abuse now.

im not so sure the tabloids are that wrong tbh, only yesterday a p**** ring run from the uk was smashed, and on local news police are looking for a 'white van man' offering kids lifts.. and these high profile events are only the tip of the iceberg. judging by the ammount of p**** activity on the internet and the seemingly daily court cases, it is much more common then we would like to believe. we only hear about the severe cases where some creep gets caught, there will be plenty of lesser cases that exist 'under the radar' as such.

Those huge cars take up too much space (2 parking spaces). Its ridiculous. Wanna drive big, pay big I say
