Posted June 17, 200718 yr Beckham bows out with Liga title BBC Sports News http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/43059000/jpg/_43059399_beckham270.jpg Beckham celebrates victory David Beckham has capped his Real Madrid career with a league title. Beckham, 32, has been in Madrid for four seasons, but Sunday's 3-1 win over Mallorca sealed a first major Spanish honour for the US-bound midfielder. Real came back from behind with two goals from Jose Reyes, who is on loan from Arsenal, and Mahamadou Diarra. It is the club's first La Liga title in four years and they edged out Barcelona, who beat Gimnastic 5-1, because of their head-to-head record. Beckham, who is set to join the LA Galaxy, was not on the pitch at the final whistle having been replaced by Reyes, but he joined the raucous celebrations at the Bernabeu. They stemmed from relief as much as anything as for the majoirty of the night it looked as if the silverware would be heading to Barcelona. The defending champions ran riot against relegated Gimnastic and were 3-0 up at the break with goals from Carles Puyol, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho. Meanwhile, Real were struggling and there was a growing edge of anxiety at the Bernabeu, which included Tom Cruise and Rafael Nadal in their ranks. Fabio Capello's team had an early scare when Arango slammed a shot on to the Real woodwork in the opening minute and they fell behind when Fernando Varela broke the offside trap to score. And injury was added to insult when leading scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy hobbled off after 33 minutes with a hamstring injury. After Beckham had curled an effort on to the Mallorca crossbar, Varela had a chance to put the visitors in the driving seat, but he poked his effort wide and Real pounced on their lifeline. Beckham, struggling with an ankle injury picked up on England duty, made way for Reyes who side-footed home with his first touch from Gonzalo Higuain's pull back on 68 minutes. Diarra's shot evades goalkeeper Moya and defender Basinas before trickling over the line before Reyes curled in a delightful third from the edge of the area. While Real left it late with those two goals coming in the final 10 minutes, Barcelona were always in control at Gimnastic, with Messi and Gianluca Zambrotta adding second-half strikes. However, their efforts proved to be in vain as Real kept their advantage at the top of the table courtesy of a 2-0 win at home over the Catalans in October and a 3-3 draw at the Nou Camp in March to land their 30th Liga title. Sevilla started the final day with an outside chance of scooping the silverware, but they lost at home to Villarreal 1-0. At the other end of the table, Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo were relegated with Gimnastic. Are you pleased that Real Madrid won La Liga or not?
June 18, 200718 yr I'm glad because of Real. ^_^ I mean that goal with hand which Barsa did in previous game, really made me mad. <_< And change is always good, Barca did it last year, so it's nice to see Real celebrating this year. ^_^
June 18, 200718 yr Well at least he's got the La Liga winners medal to add to his Premiership one's now! :D I think he'll be having mixed feelings about leaving them, but it's better to go out on a high like this, than just leave on a low.
June 18, 200718 yr bet Beckham really regrets his move now :( And I think Real regrets about that also. I read in today's newspapers that they want to give some money, to keep him. I think he'll be having mixed feelings about leaving them, but it's better to go out on a high like this, than just leave on a low. I agree. ^_^
June 18, 200718 yr Really glad he's got it :cheer: Truly brilliant player who really shouldn't be going off to America but who knows what he might accomplish there? As long as he can continue performing for England as well it'll be interesting to follow, Sky Sports news now have all the American tables because of it.
