Technically, Mariah does have a superb voice... But, it's the monster she and Whitney created that's the problem.... ie, the ridiculous histrionics, the "diva" mentality, the total inability to actually sing a song just as a song and inflict layers upon layers of octave-bashing (Mariah's excruciating version of Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" being a perfect example)... I think Kelly Osbourne summed it up perfectly when she took p*** out of Aguillera and did an impression of her singing a Christmas Carol... Pretty much sums it up really.. And now you have every fukkin' two bit chancer on rubbish like "X-Factor" going along to the audtions and just aping Mariah's style in the most Karaoke-esque fashion (hello Leona...), and those judges just fawn all over it thinking it's all so fukkin' wonderful THAT is what has given her the title of "Worst Singer of all-time", not because of her actual singing voice, but because of the horrendous garbage she has inflicted upon the world..... No female solo artistes just seem to sing a bloody song anymore.....

It was flat flat flat. You could tell she was putting every effort into trying to stay in tune. She let her dancers do all the performing.

I didn't vote for any of them. Each one of those can sing and can sing well. I think that basically if a person is not liked for whatever reason (jealousy, maybe?) then people will always criticise them. Mariah is the most successful female artist of all time, and so naturally will attract jealousy. By criticising her trademark voice is an easy attack.

to be fair the majority on there are good vocalists, just not good singers.

 

Vocaists can hit many notes with varying power etc a la Mariah, but singers are able to convey emotion and such through there songs

And anyway people can answer the question anyway they won't and decode it anyway they want just like they have decode the musical styles of KT Tunstall and Garbage and decide well hey its got a female vocalist so it must be cheesy pop. Who the hell here is actually gonna be a master of vcal technique and actually know much about that stuf? most are just happy to say 'i like that record, thats cool' just like Bryan Singer on his fave actors.
