Commentary

 

After not doing a commentary for a couple of weeks, I suppose I should bring it back for a bit! CSS spring to the top after debuting at 2 last week, with the fabulously 80s flavoured Lets Make Love… I was going to just get the single, but managed to get their album cheap instead, and I am pleased to say it is excellent! Air register their second #2 this year with Japanese flavoured Mer Du Japon, the follow up to Once Upon A Time. Yes, I am obsessed with Air, and I love it! Klaxons register the highest new entry with a cover of Grace’s Its Not Over Yet ( a top tunes #1 back in 1995 – see my other thread!) and they have managed to bring it bang up to date by converting it from a dance tune to an electronic rock tune. Serebro rise from 13 to 5 this week with Song #1, Russia’s entry into the ESC. The Black remix to this song is amazing, they sound like a funkier Girls Aloud. The Twang’s debut album is out tomorrow, and to celebrate this, excellent new song Either Way has entered the chart at 9.

Commentary

 

Just to make a change this week, a song has actually entered at the top, a feat only achieved twice before. Reverend and the Makers have a well earned #1 with the catchy Heavyweight Champion of the World. Nudging up at 2 are the Klaxons with It’s Not Over Yet, the album highlight Grace cover. Also on the rise are The Twang with the sublime Either Way and Maximo Park at 9 with Books and Boxes. The rest of the top 10 contains fallers.

 

Now for the new entries – Gwen Stefani is at 14 with the rather good 4 in the Morning, The Pigeon Detectives enter a bit late at 17, ditto for The Cribs at 21, The Holloways are at 22, The View at 24 and Ghosts at 28. This was a good week for a bit of a clear out! :D

Commentary

 

Quite a bit of movement this week, as my chart reverts to ‘summer mode’ – more new entries, less long runners and more going on! Reverend and the Makers hold on at the top for the second week, by miles my favourite song of the week – if I could make this number 0 I would :lol: Klaxons stick at 2 with potential long runner Its Not Over Yet, and The Twang stay at 3 with the brilliant Either Way. The highest new entry is nabbed by The Arctic Monkeys with the almost 60s sounding Fluorescent Adolescent, a potential number 1 perhaps? Rounding off a pleasingly Indie Top 5 are The Pigeon Detectives with I’m Not Sorry, a climber from 17. The top 10 is a bit action packed this week, as Rihanna rises to 7 with the annoyingly good Umbrella, Maximo Park likewise rise to 8 with Books From Boxes Gwen Stefani rises to 9 with the lush 4 In The Morning.

 

Elsewhere, Holloways rise to 11 with Generator, taken from their rather good album So This Is Great Britain? Mutya Buena climbs to 13 with Real Girl, The Editors climb to 14 and there are new entries from Avril Lavigne (15), Razorlight (22), Natasha Bedigfield (24), Take That (28) and Cascada at 34.

Commentary

 

No change yet again at the top, as Reverend and the Makers make it a third straight week at #1 with the best song around at the moment. I really hope they release an album soon (anyone know if they are?!), as the B side to Heavyweight Champion of the World, 18-30 is brilliant as well. Rising to a new peak at 2 are The Twang, with the indie-mellow Either Way. I recommend their album, it is excellent! The Arctic are on the rise again at 3 with Fluorescent Adolescent, the amazing follow up to Brainstorm. This 60s-tinged tune has a fair bit of crossover appeal, and it will interesting to see where it ends up on the official chart when released in a couple of weeks. Another track on the up is Gwen Stefani, already equalling her previous Top Tunes peak with 4 In The Morning. The Holloways rise to 6 from 11 and Avril Lavigne rises to 9, giving a fairly fluid Top 10.

 

There are new entries this week from Mark Ronson and Lily Allen with Oh My God (12), Mika (22) and Travis (24).

The Arctic Monkeys stick at #1 this week for a second week, but hot on their heels are Groove Armada and Mutya Buena with the classy Song 4 Mutya. The Reverend stick at 3, Avril drops to 4 and Mark Ronson and Lily Allen reach a new peak at 5 with Oh My God. The Chemical Brothers stick at 6, The Twang drop to 7, Kate Nash rises to 8 with Foundations, Amy Winehouse rise to 9 with Tears Dry On Their Own and Klaxons drop to 10.

Commentary

 

The Arctic Monkeys hold on at the top for a third week with Fluorescent Adolescent, a new record for an AM song in my chart – quite right too, FA is quickly becoming a classic. The Arctics are releasing Old Yellow Bricks next, I really would have preferred album highlight 505, but we shall see if they break their run of Top 5 singles when it is out. The rest of the top 3 is unchanged, with Groove Armada and Mutya Buena sticking at 2 for a second week, and Reverend and the Makers make it 3 weeks at 3. The Enemy move from 13 to 4 with Had Enough as I realised I had not charted this song to where it deserved to be. Their debut album is great, much recommended. Finally in the top 5, Mark Ronson and Lily Allen stick at 5 with their cover of Oh My God, giving Mark two top 5 hits for me so far this year – I hope he releases his cover of The Zutons Valerie with Amy Winehouse next to make it 3!

 

Talking of Amy Winehouse (how smooth!!) Tears Dry on Their Own rises to 6, just ahead of climber Kate Nash at 7, new entry for Fergie (yes, I like Fergie) at 8 with the reather nice Big Girls Don’t Cry, another new entry for Beyonce at 9 with the Freemasons Remix of her newie Green Light. I canot stand Beyonce’s normal songs (aside from Irreplaceable), but the freemasons seem to create miracles with Beyonce! Finally in the top 10, The Twang continue their slow descent at 10.

Commentary

 

 

The brilliant Groove Armada and the distinctive Mutya Buena nab the top spot this week, after a three week climb. This is the second Top Tunes #1 for Groove Armada, as At The River had similar success for me back in 1999. Mutya, as Sugbabaes has of course had much more success, more recently in 2005 with Push The Button. Kate Nash rises spectacularly to two this week with the Lily-esque Foundations, and The Arctics drop to 3 a position they held five weeks ago. The Rev fall to 4, Amy Winehouse climbs again to 5, The Enemy drop to 6, Beyonce and the Freemasons rise to 7, The Manic Street Preachers rise to 8, Mika leaps to 9 and mark Ronson and Lily Allen drop to 10.

 

Outside the Top 10, The Coral have this weeks highest new entry with Who’s Gonna Find Me? Ahead of the only other sole new entry this week at 25 for Sophie Ellis Bextor with Today The Suns On Us.

Another week at the top for Groove Armada and Mutya Buena, facing strong competition from this weeks highest new entry at 2 for Robyn and With Every Heartbeat (surely the dance song of the year?) and Kate nash, dropping from 2 to 3 with Foundations. Amy Winehouse rises to 4 with tears Dry On Their Own, denied further progress due to the moving of the release date, the Arctic Monkeys drop to 5 and the Rev to 6. New at 7 are Hard-Fi with the wonderful Surburban Knights (a climber for sure next week) Mika rises to 8 with Big Girls, The Coral also rise to 9 and The Enemy drop to 10.

 

Elsewhere in the chart, there are climbers for Timbaland (21-15), Nelly Furtado (22-21) and Sophie Ellis-Bextor (25-24) and new entries for Maximo Park (18) and David Guetta (22).

Commentary

 

Robin and Kleerup jump to Number 1 this week with the most original dance song in years, With Every Heartbeat. It is really refreshing to hear an original modern dance song not spoiled by mash ups or samples. Hard Fi climb to 2 with the brilliant comeback Suburban Knights, and Amy Winehouse climbs to 3 with Tears Dry On Their Own. Last weeks number 1, Groove Armada and Mutya Buena, drops to 4, while Athlete return at 5 with Hurricane (a future number 1?) Outside the top 5, the only non faller is Maximo Park who climb to 9 with Girls Who Play Guitars.

 

Elsewhere in the chart this week, there are new entries for Rihanna at 14 with Shut Up and Drive, The Twang at 18 with Two Lovers, Kaiser Chiefs at 26 with The Angry Mob and Kanye West at 28 with Daft Punk sampling Stronger. Climbers come from David Guetta (21) and Sophie Ellis Bextor (22).

Commentary

 

A well deserved second week at Number 1 for Robyn and Kleerup this week – this is fast becoming one of the songs of the year for me. The top 3 remains unchanged as well, with Hard-Fi at 2 and Amy Winehouse at 3. Athlete creep up to 4 from 5, and in a bit of a shock move, Kanye West (excellent on the Friday Night Project) rises from 29 to 5 with Daft Punk sampling Stronger. Groove Armada and Mutya Buena drop to 6, as does Kate Nash to 7. Maximo Park rise to 8 with the excellent Girls Who Play Guitars, Rihanna rises to 9 with Shut Up And Drive, a superb pop song, and the Arctic Monkeys spend a 10th week in the Top 10 at 10.

 

Reverend and the Makers finally drop from the top 10 to 11, but their newie He Said he Loves Me is snapping at their heels at 16. David Guetta finds himself with a climber at 12 with Love Is Gone, closely followed by several new entires (and future big hits) from Girls Aloud (14), James Blunt (15), Plain White T’s (20), Kasabian (22), Maroon 5 (25) and Pigeon Detectives (29). Finally this week there are other climbers from Axwell at 23 and the Kasier Chiefs at 24.

Robyn makes it three weeks at the top with the rather summery With Every heartbeat. Is suspect she will be knocked off the top next week but for the moment, Robyn reigns supreme. Hard Fi stick at 2 for a third week, and Athlete and the wonderful Hurricane rise to 3. Maximo Park rise to 4 with album opener and all round classy song, Girls Who Play Guitars, Girls Aloud are sexy (no no no!) at 5, the Rev and the Makers climb to 6 with the rather odd He Said He Loved Me, and the highest new entry is from the brilliant MIA with Bollywood themed Jimmy. Love it! Amy Wino and GA and Mutya fall to 8 and 9, and the Plain White Ts rise to 10.

Commentary

 

Against all the odds, Robyn has secured the top spot for a 4th week! This is despite very strong competition from Athlete ( a front runner for most of the week) and Girls Aloud, who continue their climb at 3. All these shenanigans mean that hard-Fi drop from their three week residency of the number 2 spot to 4, and MIA snaps at their heels at 5 with the rather fab Jimmy. New entry time at 6 for the excellent Rooney with When Did Your Heart Go Missing and at 7 for Scouting For Girls with She’s So Lovely – I hope both these songs do as well on the official chart. Reverend and the Makers drop to 8 this week, Plain White t’s rise to 9, as do Booty Luv, who jump 13 places from 23 to 10!

 

Other new entries this week come from Newton Faulkner at 22 (a bit late, but I just bought his album!), The Enemy at 32 and Natalie Imbruglia at 34. This weeks climbers are James Blunt (12-11), Kasabian (15-14), Maroon 5 (18-15), and The Sounds (36-16). Next weeks chart should be interesting with the inclusion of The Sugababes, The Stereophonics and Ida Corr & Fedde Le Grande, all of which should do rather well in my chart!

Commentary

 

A new number at last, and it goes straight in at the top of the chart! Congrats to the Sugababes who have grabbed their 4th Top Tunes number 1 (after Freak Like Me, Round Round and Push The Button) with the amazing About You Now. Incidentally, this is the 3rd song to go straight in at number 1 this year, Mason vs Princess Superstar and Reverend and the Makers being the other two. All this excitement almost detracts from Girls Aloud rising to 2 with Sexy! No No No, Rooney rising to 3 with the rather great When Did Your Heart Go Missing and Scouting for Girls nabbing 4th place with She’s So Lovely! Last weeks number 1, Robyn, drops to 5. It seems that Jimmy from MIA has been pushed back yet again to 1st October, so, great song as it is, it drops to 6, just ahead of Booty Luv who rise from 10 to 7 with Don’t Mess With My Man, who in turn are ahead of last weeks runner up, Athlete, who drop to 8. The Plain White T’s are a non mover at 9, and the excellent Suburban Knights from Hard-Fi clings onto the top 10.

Commentary

 

A change of layout this week, as new arrows are introduced thanks to Michael, and some // have been put into the chart runs. Onto the chart, The Sugababes stick at 1 with About You Now, and with 2 weeks to go before it is released, I suspect it may there for a bit longer! The Stereophonics rise to 2 this week with It Means Nothing, their best song since Dakota back in 2005 (a Top tunes #1 for 7 weeks!) and Booty Luv find them selves with another Top 3 hit with the disco-tastic Don’t Mess With My Man. Girls Aloud slide to 4 and Robyn sticks at 5, Rooney and Scouting For Girls drop to 6 and 7, and The Enemy quite rightly rise to 8 with the brilliant You’re Not Alone. Finally in the Top 10, Ida Corr and Fedde Le Grand rise to 9, and Hard-Fi cling on at 10.

Commentary

 

A third week at the top for Sugababes also sees a second week at 2 for the Stereophonics. This duo may be a hard to break for a couple of weeks, although Peter Bjorn, John and Victoria Bergsman try their best with whistle-tastic Young Folks, as do Ida Corr and Fedde Le Grand at 4. Robyn sticks at 5 for a third week running, with ex chart topper With Every Heartbeat, The Enemy rise to 6 with the excellent You’re Not Alone, Sonny J has the highest new entry of the week with the superb Can’t Stop Moving and Babyshambles rise to 8 with Delivery. Girls Aloud slip to 9 this week, but Hard-Fi cling on at 10 for a third week.

Aly & AJ rise to 5 with the rather fabulous Potential Break Up Song, Ida Corr and Fedde le Grand drop to 6, Robyn drops from 5 to 7, Manic Street Preachers rise to 8 with Indian Summer, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse rise to 9 and MIA sneaks back into the Top 10 at 10.
