Posted June 29, 200718 yr Ive noticed that this year seems to be the year of failed comebacks, whilst last year proved to be a great year for comebacks with Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake, Amy Winehouse, Take That...etc all having massive sales and great reviews this year this year has been very different with artists/groups who were succesful the last time around but failing to impress with their comeback albums/singles for example: Joss Stone, Natasha Bedingfield, Kelly Clarkson... all were very succesful in 2004/2005 but this time around are doing a lot less well. June 29, 200718 yr There are reasons though, as opposed to just general indifference. Joss Stone pissed a lot of people with her ridiculous fake American attitude. Natasha Bedingfield made a VERY poor first single choice. I Want To Have Your Babies, whilst attention-grabbing, was just plain odd. I don't think a lot of people would have felt that comfortable buying such a barmy record. Kelly Clarkson aswell has alientated people with her new direction. Yeah, it's great that she's taking charge of her own career, but to be honest she just doesn't have the edge to cut it as the rock chick she so badly wants to be. And there have been some minor success stories this year. I personally never expected Travis to have another top 10 single, but they proved me wrong. Bloc Party have done just aswell as they did with their debut, and although the follow-up single didn't do that great, the Kaiser Chiefs outperformed expectations with Ruby. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's career looked almost dead after the Shoot From The Hip album, but she's managed both a top 10 single and album. And I doubt Rhianna or the Arctic Monkeys will be having any complaints about how their new material's been received. Edited June 29, 200718 yr by Shoat
June 29, 200718 yr i wouldnt exactly say that either of the three you have mentioned have FLOPPED, as they have all only released one single and you cant really judge on that, plus kellys single was top 10 in UK and US, and the album looks set to reach number 2 on sunday, certainly not a FLOP.
June 29, 200718 yr But there are some successful comebacks this year, one that springs to mind being Enrique Iglesias...I never expected another hit from him but he's currently in the top 3 singles and albums...
June 29, 200718 yr Also the flops with Gwen 4 In The Morning, Nastasha Soulmate i think are because no one wants to hear ballads at this time of year really do they Last year Sugababes Follow Me Home flopped in the summer when any other time of year i think it would have been another top 10 And well Joss just started off her album with a bad song :( One other successfulish comeback was Beverley Knight she may of missed top 40 with her single but her album was top 10 :D
June 29, 200718 yr Also the flops with Gwen 4 In The Morning, Nastasha Soulmate i think are because no one wants to hear ballads at this time of year really do they Yea i totally agree, i adore ballads and alot of the time they are my fave songs, but june/july time should be the time for fast songs imo
June 29, 200718 yr Surely you don't judge a hit or a flop by whether artist's album debuts in the top 10. Many do just that but fall out of the chart after a few weeks, SEB, NB & JS etc. Better to judge when the album has been out for a while on it's cumulative sales not it's debut position. Especially seeing as you don't need particularly high sales at this time of the year to make the top 10. Edited June 29, 200718 yr by truly talented
June 29, 200718 yr Yea i totally agree, i adore ballads and alot of the time they are my fave songs, but june/july time should be the time for fast songs imo Didn't stop Powter and Blunt ruling summer 2005 did it :o And Rihanna's Unfaithful last year If the ballad is strong enough it will shine through no matter what time of year ^_^
June 29, 200718 yr Author Also the UK public seem to all suddenly love singers/bands like Hellogoodbye and Avril Lavigne because their singles happened to be succesful, they aren't proper fans in reality, it was like that with MCR for example then as people turned against them suddenly so does everyone else. I think one of the main reasons Kelly Clarkson is having a poorly recieved comeback is because the album is pretty rubbish.

Its not rubbish, its just a 180 degree turn in direction...the tracks take far longer to grow than the instant pop hits on Breakaway but some of them have a more lasting quality to them, Sober for example... At least she didn't just make Breakaway part 2 as then she would have been criticised for not evolving as an artist

Personally i find 'Irvine' deathly boring, 'Yeah' is plain irritating and the rest are just average imo. The main point is though all the new 'fans' of HelloGoodbye etc are not proper fans as they would be the first to turn on them if there was a blacklash like that of MCR, James Blunt, Joss Stone etc Edited June 29, 200718 yr by Conor

I find Irvine so chilling, definitely one of the two standout tracks on My December
June 29, 200718 yr 4 In The Morning & Soulmate are not comeback singles.... Edited June 29, 200718 yr by Notso_Hampson
