Is absolutely in shambles, the days are gone when I used to get mail early morning during Breakfast, now I receive my mail lunchtimes or early afternoon, and sometimes I'm not around especially when a bulky packet arrives, that does not fit the letter box obviously, they take them back to the depot, and I have to travel to the depot to pick it up myself the next following day. Its stupid they could leave it next door or in the broom cupboard next to the house, which is usually unlocked.

And I swear my postman is thick as a branch, by posting my mail to a neighbour and getting theirs.

What's your post like in your area.

no idea what time mine arrives - is always after I leave <_<

Dont blame the Posties for the shambolic state of mail deliveries mate, blame the ridiculous decisions made by management and the decisions made by Govt to end the Royal Mail's monopoly and Privatisation of some sections of Royal Mail and the Post Office which has led us to this state of affairs... I worked for Royal Mail for almost 5 years, and frankly by the end of it, it was NOT the same company that I had started working for, I chose to leave because some decisions that were being made were totally ridiculous and it was very obvious to me that it had become far less about providing a service to the public and merely about making profits... Oh yeah, and there is the small matter of Royal Mail employing agency temps who arent trained properly and frankly dont know their arse from their elbow (not their fault though, they're just not getting the training, I was given almost a fortnight's training before I was let out on my own with a bag of mail, these temps are given about 6 hours "orientation" and then they're expected to know what the fukk to do...)

Thanks to this "modernization" the early morning delivery has been all but done away with, if you're lucky enough to live at the start of a delivery route then you do get your mail in the morning (about 10 or 11 am), if you live at the end of a route, then you're lucky if you get any mail much before 1pm... The "Second Delivery" was also done away with, because it wasn't "economically viable" according to Royal Mail bosses... Well, if the Royal Mail had remained a PUBLIC SERVICE (as it damn well should have done...), then that would hardly have mattered... Royal Mail has also made some disastrous Corporate decisions, investements in failing mail services in Europe have seen the company lose money, oh, and then there was the whole "Consignia" ferrago as well (what bloody IDIOT made that decision.....???  ). Now, Royal Mail is talking about shedding 30 - 40 thousand jobs, which will just make the service even worse.....

^ Now this is something that I strongly agree with.

Normally, I would come in with an anti Conservative rant about how the abolishment of state owned monopolies of public services (Gas, Water, Telecom, Railways, etc) has been a complete disaster for the Great British public.

But seeing how this was instigated by the current Labour administration, then I can't defend it other than to say like the milkman, the need for a national postal service is becoming less essential by the day as a communication network because of the internet, direct debit, mobile phones, fax machines, etc.

Our post is c**p too. The postman seems to be a different one every week. We're No.10 but get the mail for No.12 some days. They're hopeless. My mum's given up sending any packages to us as we either never get them or they're half-opened when they eventually arrive.

Temps....

All the long-term, more reliable staff are deserting Royal Mail in droves mate.. Or they're retiring and Royal Mail just cant be arsed to find suitable, permanent replacements, so they hire cheap temps on short-term contracts....

Yeah but we never see the same one two weeks running. They can't be bothered either. I told him we kept getting next door's and he just shrugged his shoulders so I rang up. We never saw him again! He was putting 14 in No.12 and so on all along the road. The supervisor I spoke to said "think half-of them can't read" WTF. So why employ them then? Surely they can read numbers, hardly rocket science is it?

Not so sure, I actaully get more and more mail by the day. Much of which I never used to get.

Here are some examples.

Telephones

Old way: Used to get one phone bill from BT quarerly. 4 documents a year.

New way: Now get monthly statement from call provider (first telecom) who I pay by Direct Debit. I also get Quarterly bill from BT for line rental, plus about two other letters per quarter from BT asking me to 'come back to them'. Total 12*1 + 4*3= 24 documents a year.

Banks.

Old way: 2 statements per year, 1 chequebook (as required) + plus a book i'd update in the bank. 2 and a bit documents per year.

New way. 1 statement a year, 2 notices of change to terms. 2 letters about security. 1 update on debit card. Multi letters(maybe 20 per year) about car insurance, house insurance, utility bills, holiday travel from the bank(advertising). Total estimate 25+ documents per year.

Same thing with the car. I used to have no documents about the car from the garage. No documents

Now I get, warranty reminder, update on model faults, MOT reminder, accident recover service information, car insurance advertising. I'd also get more if I actually have any thing repaired. So now 5+ per year.

In addition I get some unsolicited bulk mail not address to anyone, today - not untypical I had three adverts which was double glazing, insurance for the over 50's ( perhaps they are telling me something!) and car insurance.

im not bothered when it comes, as long as it does... trouble is i get other peoples mail dispite the address being clearly printed on the item <_< so yes scott, i DO blame the postie for that!

my confidence in getting my mail though isnt high, if im getting other peoples mail then they might be getting mine, and i get paid by cheque by the post.

Dunno about you but i wouldnt want to have a package of mine left on my doorstep anyone can take it. They also usualy get you to sign for these things that are two big for the post box so if they just left it there you could pick it up and claim you never got it.

Our post man and lady do about half the week each. They also seam to varry the time they come the post can come any time between 9.30 and 5.30... very annoying

My mail comes between 11:30am - 12:00pm every day.

Yeah, but Rob, you and me are both old enough to remember when mail deliveries weren't fraught with nearly as many problems and difficulties as they are now, and yeah, I DO put it down to the Govt messing around with things and management for messing things up and cutting corners when it comes to training staff properly (and, in many cases, not at all, especially when you're talking about temps or people on short-term contracts)... 10-12 years ago there were practically NONE of the problems that exist now, people on this thread are talking about getting the wrong mail continuously and on a regular basis, whereas in the past, it would be, in general, a far more rare occurrence, maybe only occurring when the regular postie was off sick and they put somebody else (unfamiliar with the area) on the route to cover, also, people would tend to see the Royal Mail as a "job for life", it's not like that now, the service is infested with temps and short-termers and the management seem to think "well, they're only a temp, we dont really NEED to give them the full training"....

You cant have a situation like Coolchris is describing with new posties turning up every other week on a route and not expecting mistakes to be made... Posties are NOT being trained properly like I was, this is a FACT... You dont train people to do the job properly and cut corners, this is what you get mate. You should be angry, VERY angry with the way the service has been totally fukked up in this country.....

My post is really good, we nearly always get it at around 8-9 in the morning. I've never really had any trouble with the post in my area tbh  Except when there's strikes and stuff obviously.

You're probably one of the lucky ones to have a Postie who's been on the same route for about 20 years then.....

training?... surely all they need to do is READ what address is actually on the fcukin letter! i see no excuse for my neighbour getting my mail when a letter is properly addressed.

My postman is very good. Ok, I occasionally get something addressed to a neighbour but we all make mistakes. It doesn't arrive very early - around lunchtime - but then I'm used to that. I've lived at four different addresses over the last 25 years and I haven't received the post before leaving for work at any of them.

Their biggest problem - as others have said - is the way the government has opened the market to competition but where competitors don't have the same restrictions as the Post Office. So, no surprises, the other companies cream off all the profitable business and leave the PO with the rest.

You clearly have no idea of what the job actually entails mate, I did it for five years so I know how difficult it could be at times and what sorts of time constraint pressures people were under.. And unfamiliarity with an area IS a bloody factor, it's easy to pick out four letters from a bundle instead of three, very easy, trust me... Unless you've actually done the job yourself you have no idea what you're talking about, so kindly keep your opinions about the people doing it to yourself.....
