This is a continuation from my 1994-1999 thread of what would have been my Personal Chart #1's had I been doing my chart. It is a mix of songs I have retrospectively come to love and those I loved at the time. Comments at any stage are most welcome!

2000

Manic Street Preachers – The Masses Against The Classes (2 weeks)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004TT9R.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I just noticed the start of this song sounds like Can We Fix It by Bob The Builder! Anyway, sneaky little #1 by the Manics, not their best, but still rather good.

"We love the winter"

REM – The Great Beyond (3 weeks)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/16139.jpg

Taken from the Soundtrack to the Jim Carrey film Man In The Moon. The REM connection being their 1993 single of the same name.

"I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs"

All Saints – Pure Shores (6 weeks)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/797%20new.jpg

Taken from the soundtrack from the Beach and cunningly has a bachy feel to it. Easily the All Saints best song.

"I can hear it calling you my dear"

Melanie C with Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes – Never Be The Same Again (3 weeks)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/10332%20new.jpg

This brilliant tune is argubly the best Solo Spice effort. Featuring the sadly departed Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes from TLC.

"It's not a secret anymore now we've opened up the door"

Toploader - Achilles Heel (3 weeks)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/11358ns.jpg

I always preferred this, Toploader's debut single, to Dancing In The Moonlight.

"Keep the dream alive"

Sonique – It Feels So Good (3 weeks)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/9630%20new.jpg

Very classy dance tune, and probably the best from a dance heavy year.

"And it's you i'm only dreaming of"

S Club 7 - Reach (3 weeks)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/d6/Reach(SClub7).jpg/200px-Reach(SClub7).jpg

Superb flawless pop tune.

"And with that rainbow shining over you"

Kylie Minogue – Spinning Around (1 week)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/7617%20new.jpg

Massive comeback for Kylie, and with a video featuring THOSE hotpants, where could she go wrong?!

"Do you like what you see?"

David Gray - Babylon (1 week)

http://www.mattscdsingles.com/acatalog/5098%20new.jpg

Far from being boring, David Gray is a great lyricist and singer. This, his signature tune, is featured on his album White Ladder, which took neatly 2 years to get to Number 1!

"Moving through the clouds i'm pushing chemicals all though my bloodstream"

Steps – Summer Of Love (3 weeks)

http://www.songlyricscollection.com/lyrics/s/steps/step-one/step-one.jpg

Hurrah for my favourite Steps song! The video is rather like a GAP advert...

"The temperatures rising, we search the horizon"

Coldplay - Yellow (2 weeks)

http://www.adrians.co.uk/acatalog/cdr6538.jpg

Apparently named after a copy of the Yellow Pages, this superb acoustic song was the reason I got inot Coldplay, who happen to be one of my favourite bands of all time. Expect to see alot more of them in this countdown!

"Look at the stars, look how they shine for you"

Robbie Williams – Rock DJ (1 week)

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00004WZPX.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Heavily influenced by Ian Dury, Rock DJ is an excellent comeback for Mr Williams. THAT video sees him rip his own skin off and feed it to ravenous ladies. Normal day, then?

"If you can't get a girl and your best friend can, it's time to move your body"

Kylie Minogue – On A Night Like This (1 week)

http://hitparade.ch/cdimg/kylie_minogue-on_a_night_like_this_s.jpg

Considered by many to be Kylie's best, On A Night Like This is the classy second single from what I consider her best album, Light Years.

"Seems like i've known you a lifetime"

  • Author

This is a 'missing song' from my countdown as it was never released in the UK, but did rather well in France..

Kylie Minogue - Your Disco Needs You

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/10/KylieMinogueYourDiscoNeedsYouCDCover.jpg/180px-KylieMinogueYourDiscoNeedsYouCDCover.jpg

http://accel14.mettre-put-idata.over-blog.com/0/03/51/43/coldplay-trouble.jpg

This is the song that did it for me - I was totally smitten by Coldplay after hearing this in Virgin megastore. The only song to stop me in my tracks totally.

Some great songs in this countdown, some so-so. Where did A1 - Same Old Brand New You peak?

Same Old Brand New You would have been #2 - 2001 is my fave year ever for music, it was tough picking them!
