Posted August 27, 200717 yr The Council is planning to knock down Camden Market and build a shopping centre there instead :o  . Some more history disappearing to make way for for another generic outlet for topshop/starbucks/tkmaxx. Plus all the traders losing their livelihood. If you feel the same way you should sign the petition http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/camdenmarket/ If you dont live in Britain, why not lie and say you do ;) Edited August 27, 200717 yr by russt68
August 27, 200717 yr It asks for my address on the main page While I support the cause I feel that giving my address and postcode is too big an invasion of privacy

I doubt you'll be taken into interrogation in Belmarsh for signing a petition against the destruction of Camden Market!

August 27, 200717 yr LOL I didn't think I would end up in Guantanamo Bay or anything for signing a petition but I don't understand what business they have wanting to know address and post code etc PetitionOnline never ask for such personal private information so the fact a government agency is asking for such information makes me suspicious as to the government's motives I will sign it under a false address
August 27, 200717 yr Thats not the point though People signing these petitions could be labelled as subversives by the government and so on and so on I just do not trust this regime TBH mate, I dont think you really are being all that paranoid.. I've done online petitions before, this is the first one that asks for a home address (I put an old address in...), usually they just ask you for an email address, so I dont think your fears are actually entirely groundless... I signed it anyway, because I live in Camden and I feel that this is an utter fukkin' disgrace. The very reason why people go to Camden market is because it doesn't look or feel just like any other generic, homogenised, Americanised High Street shopping experience or "shopping mall" (<_< <_< <_< <_< <_<) .... It has a character that just does not exist anywhere else... I think that it should be made a listed building.. Prince Charles was right about this whole general debate actually.. Never thought I'd find myself agreeing with a Royal...

I just assumed they wanted the address to verify you are actually a citizen. Replacing Camden with a shopping centre..truly a BIZARRE idea. Camden Market is one of THE London landmarks.
August 27, 200717 yr Replacing Camden with a shopping centre..truly a BIZARRE idea. Camden Market is one of THE London landmarks. You'd think wouldn't you...? But these w/ankers doing it, are the same sort of w/ankers who want to destroy London's Chinatown and haul down the Pagodas... These scum don't realise the actual value of a single damn thing if you ask me....
August 27, 200717 yr New-Labour Camden Council know exactly why they're doing it - for the money. All those lovely chainstores mean increased rents, and business rates are based on the value of the rent. So you push out all the small businesses who can't afford the higher rents and ta-da - more money for Camden Council's coffers. Sorted!

Nu Labor b/astards at it again... <_< As a resident of Camden borough, I am thoroughly disgusted by their actions, they're no better than the scumbag Tories who run Westminster that want to destroy Chinatown...

What a way to go about it. New-Labour Camden Council know exactly why they're doing it - for the money. But surely Camden as an area would LOSE money, the Market's the big draw there. Will the businesses and stores get anywhere near the kind of business they do now?
August 27, 200717 yr My friends make their income in Camden (http://www.suaydesign.com/ - sorry - shameless advertising!) and without their stall and shopfront in camden they would be truly stuffed. to be honest, i think their cause is more important than telling the government my address which they already know anyway.
August 28, 200717 yr But surely Camden as an area would LOSE money, the Market's the big draw there. Will the businesses and stores get anywhere near the kind of business they do now? The Stables Market is one of four in Camden, plus all the small shops in the main street. The Council could probably get away with closing one market without it affecting trade - tourists won't know for years that it's not as good as it once was and will keep coming. Whatever the level of trade the Council still get their business rates.
August 28, 200717 yr it may not affect trade for the Council...but it definately will for those people whose livlihoods depend on it.
August 28, 200717 yr Signed, I go to there quite often infact most times I go to London because of the exact reasons said above, it's different! Last time I was there there was a Music Fair at the Electirc Ballroom which had hundreds of rarities and old singles from loads of artists I liked, I'd be HUGELY upset if this went ahead. :(
