funny if everyone started posting their faves and it was all from 75 - 100

the point about #41-100 is that most were either going up, or down, thus they have had or are going to have their peak time at an earlier or later date. otherwise the hits just werent 'hits' (as top 40 is all that we ever used).

Sorry to disagree with you here - The official chart in 1987 was Top 75 with the next 25 unofficial same as it is today.

It's only the BBC that used the shortened chart.

From 1969 (when the BBC started using the official chart) to Feb 1978 when the official chart was Top 50, the BBC only used Top 30.

yeah but its only the bbc we listend too :) therefore when they played hits from the top 40 on any one date, them songs relate to that date. if a song was a big hit in the spring of a year then thats when i want to remember it as being, along with the memories at that time. if it was around in the lower reaches 6 months later if fcuks up memories... if you get my drift :)

Speak for yourself. The only BBC I listened to at the time was John Peel and Radio 4! Now the only BBC I listen to is Radio 4. My memories of the charts are as much about the unusual records that made the lower reaches as the bland nonsense at the top end! So my favourites from the "proper" chart were these…

02. The Pet Shop Boys And Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done To Deserve This

07. New Order - True Faith

13. Prince - U Got The Look

16. The Smiths - Girlfriend In A Coma

23. Then Jerico - The Motive

33. The Jesus And Mary Chain - Happy When It Rains

42. Beastie Boys - She's On It

43. Pet Shop Boys - It's A Sin

47. Public Image Limited - Seattle

54. Yello And Shirley Bassey - The Rhythm Divine

85. The Primitives - Thru The Flowers

96. Crazyhead - Baby Turpentine

It was certainly slim pickings in the chart by the late eighties when all the daytime DJs were Smashy and Niceys. No-one played much indie, rap or that new-fangled house music during the day, so not much of it charted.
