Manics Xmas single

BBC 6 Music News

The band reckon festive songs are "really cool"

06 Sept 07 - Manic Street Preachers have revealed to 6 Music that they are recording a Christmas single.

The band follow up the 1 October release of the Indian Summer single with their regular Christmas tour, which kicks off in Aberdeen on 2 December and wraps up in Brighton on 14 December. Now the band want to follow the tradition of Christmas songs by artists such as Wizzard, Slade and St Etienne.

"I think we've got a bit more of a love of life and sense of humour than people realise," James Dean Bradfield told 6 Music. "So a Christmas tour for us is always really cool. The one thing we are thinking about doing is trying to write a Christmas song, because we regard that as a great, great tradition - Christmas singles are just really cool."

Bradfield has covered Last Christmas by Wham! before and his performance of that song on TFI Friday was included on the b-sides and rarities album, Lipstick Traces (A Secret History Of Manic Street Preachers). However, the Manics frontman says the band now want their own festive composition, although they haven't yet decided what sort of release it will get. It could be a paid-for download or a free MP3 for fans.

Bradfield said: "I'm not sure what we would do with it. We have actually started making in-roads into it - and it's not something we should be embarrassed about. I think it's a fine British tradition that should be carried on."

He added: "The way it reads is a bit funny at the moment, we've got to decide what we're going to do with it. We've always got lots of little plans and dreams and that's one of them at the moment, to do a Christmas single."

Despite some of the dark lyrics on Manic Street Preachers songs, Bradfield stressed that they will be keeping true to the spirit of Christmas.

He said: "It's not going to be Manic Street Preachers, I Killed Christmas, or something like that. It will be a bit more upbeat than that."

Last year The Killers made the US chart with their Christmas song A Great Big Sled, which was available on iTunes. It made number 11 in the UK Download Chart, but wasn't eligible for the official singles chart. However, changes to the rules this year mean that a Christmas single released as a download could enter the Top 40.

Would you like to see a Manics Xmas single or not?

Yes, i love the Manics and i will be looking forward to the song.... as long as its not $h!t
I welcome Christmas songs from everyone, even the now very stale Manics.
Love the manics, a Christmas single should wash away the disappointment of them choosing to release the very vanilla 'Indian Summer' when there are far better on the album imo
I welcome a Christmas single from anyone. IMO Christmas week should be full of loads of new releases to bring back the traditional Christmas chart battle - not let this X Factor c**p dominate all the time. :/
