Posted March 12, 200619 yr I'll update all the standings etc , in here until we have a sports forum Bahrain Grand Prix (Round 1) Qualifying Formula One can be proud tonight, after the 2006 edition of the series, got underway in some style, this morning in Bahrain. The multi-million pound Sakhir circuit, paid witness to a narrow victory for Renault's current World Champion; Fernando Alonso, after a hard fought battle, with a resurgent Michael Schumacher of Ferrari. The weekend had got off to a fabulous start, what with the new "shoot-out" qualifying system, being used to great effect, for the first time. In the session, a total of twelve drivers are eliminated from further progression, after two fun-filled fifteen minute sections. Thereafter these eliminations, the remaining ten drivers, are forced into battle for the pole position. On Saturday, it was Michael Schumacher who came out on top after an exciting battle with new Ferrari team-mate, Felipe Massa. Britain's Jenson Button was able to capitilize on his Honda's speed, to take third, whilst Alonso, was quite content with fourth. Not so happy, was the Finn Kimi Raikkonen. The Iceman, had wishbone failure early on in the opening elimination round, hence forcing him out of the running. His McLaren team had come to Bahrain off the back of a worrying winter period, where reliability in general had been a serious frustration. Elsewhere, Giancarlo Fisichella in the sister Renault car, was suffering with engine trouble related to the electronic systems. Therefore, the Roman, who's frustration would result in expletives come race day, could only manage a lowly ninth for the start. Indeed, there were question marks over night, as to whether an engine change would be a good idea for Fisi. On reflection, the team's choice to not do this, was a negative one. So; after the highly entertaining qualifying session had finished; we were left with this grid line-up: 1. Michael Schumacher / Ferrari (5) 1:31.431 2. Felipe Massa / Ferrari (6) + 0.047 3. Jenson Button / Honda (12) + 0.118 4. Fernando Alonso / Renault (1) + 0.271 5. Juan Pablo Montoya / McLaren Mercedes (4) + 0.733 6. Rubens Barrichello / Honda (11) + 1.148 7. Mark Webber / Williams Cosworth (9) + 1.575 8. Christian Klien / Red Bull Ferrari (15) + 1.681 9. Giancarlo Fisichella / Renault (6) + 2.065 10.Nick Heidfeld / BMW-Sauber (16) + 2.495 11.Jacques Villeneuve / BMW-Sauber (17) + 1.025 12.Nico Rosberg / Williams Cosworth (10) + 1.419 13.David Coulthard / Red Bull Ferrari (14) + 1.419 14.Jarno Trulli / Toyota (8) + 1.635 15.Vitantonio Liuzzi / Scuderia Toro Rosso Cosworth (20) + 1.985 16.Scott Speed / Scuderia Toro Rosso Cosworth (21) + 3.175 17.Ralf Schumacher / Toyota (7) + 3.175 18.Christijan Albers / Midland-Toyota (18) + 3.271 19.Tiago Monteiro / Midland-Toyota (19) + 4.469 20.Takuma Sato / Super Aguri Honda (22) + 5.980 21.Yuji Ide / Super Aguri Honda (23) + 8.839 22.Kimi Raikkonen / McLaren Mercedes (3) NO TIME Race As the Bahraini dust settled on qualifying, thoughts began to drift rapidly towards the race. Finally, after nearly five months away, Formula One racing would be back, on the Global sporting agenda. Many busybodies in the paddock were wary of Ferrari's Saturday pace. It is true to say that they had been quick over the winter, however, both Renault and Honda had looked stronger over long runs. Despite Ferrari’s pace, many experts were still however tipping the Renault, of Alonso to pull through and take victory. The theory was that the Ferrari's ahead had fuelled light, and that Alonso's raw pace could see off both them, and Jenson Button in the Honda as well. But, as the cars lined up on the grid, it really wasn't as clean cut as that to predict. As the lights went out for the start, it was Alonso who made the best getaway. The World Champion slicing his way past Button; whom, was struggling with his clutch on the get-go, for third. He soon made light work of second place, by breezing past Massa at turn Four, when the Brazilian ran wide. This gave Fernando the chance to pressurize Schumacher in first, whilst behind Massa and Montoya, Barrichello and Button were having a tantalizing inter-team tussle for fifth position. In the middle of the pack, Nico Rosberg in the Williams didn't have the greatest of first corners. The son of 1982 Champion, Keke; was attempting a move on BMW's Nick Heidfeld, however, he soon ran out of room, and ended up facing the wrong way without a front wing. After pitting in, he rejoined behind Sato in the Aguri car, before fighting his way back through the field, in what was a very impressive drive, for seventh place, and two World Championship points. Debutant; Yuji Ide in the other Aguri-Honda, was the first man to fall foul of a drive through penalty in 2006. The Japanese' crew were still on the grid, within the fifteen second clearance time, that occurs before the start of the formation lap. Hence, the 31 year olds debut didn't get off, to the best of starts. After this early setback, the fledgling team would have more difficulties with Ide’s car, but considering the rushed nature of their entry, the race, was a rewarding one. After a few laps, Button had out-done Barrichello for fifth, and was hounding down upon Juan Pablo Montoya in the shiny McLaren, for fourth. The pairing soon profited from a mistake by the exuberant and probably a little over-excited Massa, in the Ferrari. Under braking for turn one, the little Brazilian snatched a rear brake and pirouetted perilously closely across the bows of Alonso in the Renault. After seriously flat spotting the tyres, Massa pitted, and perhaps could have altered his strategy, to achieve a good points finish. However, this was not to be, as his Ferrari race debut was blighted further, by an unwilling air-gun on the right rear wheel, resulting in a drop back to twentieth place. Thereafter, his pace was nothing to write home about, but he did manage to come home ninth, after putting a nice move on Tonio Liuzzi, in the â€Ârev-restricted†V10 engined Scuderia Toro Rosso. Up at the front, Alonso was falling back behind Schumacher, with the German putting in some hot lap times. However, he managed to keep his elder statesman in full view, and was still in a good position. Button passed Montoya for third at turn one in a clean manoeuvre, before the Columbian casually re-took the place. However, Jense was having none of it, and he re-passed the McLaren, again at turn one, in what was a wonderful pass. This time he made it stick, and pulled out a small gap. Kimi Raikkonen had a decent start to the race, climbing up to tenth at the start. But, unfortunately he got bogged down behind Villeneuve's BMW, and he struggled to get past the Canadian. Jacques was driving really well, but, he'd later retire with a fiery engine failure, on lap 29. Schumacher came into pit from the lead earlier than his fellow contenders on lap fifteen, confirming the suggestion that he was running lighter, than his competitors. The stop was good, and he re-joined just ahead of former team-mate Rubens Barrichello. The question now, was how much more fuel did Alonso have on-board? Fisichella in the other Renault, pitted a lap after Schumacher, and British hearts leaped as Martin Brundle; ITV-commentator, indicated that it was in fact Alonso in the pits. Fear of more Ferrari domination, soon subsided however, when Brundle corrected his mistake. Fisi however, could not proclaim to be as relieved. After struggling with the engine map troubles that had hindered his qualifying run twenty-four hours earlier, he received a message from his engineer; Alan Permayne over the team radio, praising him for his crisis management skills. Not encouraged by this message, the normally cool Italian promptly voiced his dissatisfaction with a heavy use of expletives, as he rolled the car out of the pits. He was not to know, that his words were being broadcast globally on ITV-F1! Alonso finally came into the pits, rather more coolly than his team-mate, some five laps after Schumacher. Thus, concreting the idea that the two teams are tantalizingly similarly paced. After an easy pit-stop, Alonso rejoined behind the German, and promptly set about keeping much closer to him than he had in the first stint. It definitely appeared, that the Spaniard was happier with this newer, set of Michelin tyres. Nick Heidfeld and David Coulthard were having a great battle in and around the midfield. The Ferrari powered; Red Bull RB2 - had not done much running during the winter. On the Friday of the Grand Prix, Coulthard himself revealed that the team had only undertaken 7,000 kilometres of track time with the car. This compared with Honda's 27,000 Kilometres, just demonstrates the lack of preparation the RB2 had. Here in Bahrain, the team were entering unknown territory, and the fact that both drivers were able to battle nicely among the lower end of the points, is a testament to the design of the car. Whilst team-mate Klien, was running steadily in seventh, David was on the fringes of the points, in front of Heidfeld's BMW. Going down to turn one, the favoured passing spot on this Hermann Tilke designed facility, Heidfeld took to the left hand side of the track, getting alongside the Scot. Side-by-side into the turn two kink, DC fought as hard as he could to force Heidfeld left, but; Nick stood his ground, forcing DC onto the asphalt run-off. Heidfeld was through, but he'd paid the consequences later on, when the new, permanent head steward; Andrew Gilbert-Scott judged his move to be unfair. The second stint of the Grand Prix, presented Rubens Barrichello with major gearbox troubles, on his Honda debut. The now veteran driver, lost the use of third gear, and did well to finish in fifteenth. However, his general pace over the weekend, had been slightly slower than his younger team-mate Button. Whether this is down to pure lack of acclimatization with the team, or whether this will become a standing trait, remains to be seen. At this juncture, I'd personally side with the former. Whilst Alonso continued to stick with Schumacher at the head of the field, Kimi Raikkonen had managed to work his way up to third on a one-stop strategy. The Finn had done a tremendous job of seething his way through the squabbling two-stoppers, setting consistently fast laps, in order to build up a healthy sized lead, with hopes of re-joining ahead of Jenson Button, after his stop. The TOYOTA team were struggling mercilessly. Armed with the biggest budget in the pit-lane, they had released their 2006 challenger; the TF106, way back in November. So, to see them so slow was really a big let-down. Drivers; Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher, used the Bahrain race as an extended test-session, after a really poor qualifying put them out of contention for points. Jarno later admitted that even when he was pushing his hardest, he could not scramble any speed from the car. No doubt, there will be a massive enquiry after the Sepang race next week, as to the teams' bizarre lack of pace. They seem to have taken a step back in every area over last season. Back at the front, and Michael Schumacher took to the pit-lane once again on lap thirty-six, with Alonso assuming the lead. As he rounded turn eight, his engineer proclaimed "these are winning laps" - and Alonso was in no mood to hang around. Waving furiously at the marshals, who weren't displaying blue flags, to the backmarkers Fernando was trying to navigate, he came into the pits three laps after Schumacher. It would be touch and go as to whether he'd keep the lead. The Renault crew were sublime. They released Fernando, booted and fuelled; a second faster than Michael's earlier stop. As the camera shot, cut to the main straight, pit exit in full view; it really was an un-callable situation. They were literally side-by-side; wheel to wheel, and late on the brakes into turn one. Alonso held the favoured line, as Michael attempted to squeeze him, but, Alonso held steadfast and nosed ahead beyond the turn two kink. Ross Brawn's clenched fist said it all; with seventeen laps to go, Fernando had got ahead, and all he had to do now was to do some "race management" as he declared it. At one point, easing off so much, that he became treacherously close to being passed by the mighty German. But, the youngster held Schumi at bay, becoming the first race winner of 2006. A really close fought battle, of both tactical wit, great pit-stops and determined driving. Alonso came out on top in the end, but it could so easily have been Schumacher and Ferrari's day. Behind them, some twenty seconds further back; was McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen. His one-stop strategy and confident driving allowed him to take the fight to the field, and he embarrassed his team-mate Juan Montoya, by finishing some way ahead of the Columbian, whom had qualified fifth. In fourth, was Jenson Button, whom had trailed Kimi closely towards the end, but was unable to get by the Finnish star. If not for the clutch troubles which seriously hindered his start, and subsequently his strategy as well, he could, so easily - have been in a position to fight with Fernando and Michael. Behind Montoya in fifth, was the two Williams'. No doubt Nico Rosberg in seventh, will attract most of the praise, and deservedly so. The reigning GP2 champion, really took the fight to the F1 regulars, and put in some tremendous moves; in particular on both Red Bull's to score points on his debut. Mark Webber, just in front, had demonstrated the beauty of a quiet and focused race, which allowed him to attain sixth position in the Desert. Christian Klien, had done a brilliant job in qualifying to reach the final section, and post a time worthy of eighth, and this was where he finished after a hard race in the untested Red Bull car. Further down the field; the two Scuderia Toro Rosso cars finished ahead of the two TOYOTA's. Vitantonio Liuzzi, bringing his mount home in eleventh, and team-mate, rookie Scott Speed, finished thirteenth. And a final mention, to Takuma Sato in the Super Aguri-Honda. He managed to finish four laps down on the field, behind Tiago Monteiro in the MF1-Toyota. This came, after some big pit-stop troubles, Takuma having to pit a total of six times, due to problems with faulty fuel rigs. This cost him a total of two minutes, so; a respectable performance from the car, given the circumstances. So; to conclude. The opening race of 2006 provided us with an unpredictable outcome; whereby it really was a close call to see who would win. It showcased the potential we have for a very heavily involved title fight in 2006; and we really do have a great season on our hands. Also as well; the midfield runners, were able to showcase some decent racing as well; so we were never starved of significantly exciting action. It was a great start to the year, and Fernando Alonso tonight, will be the happiest man in Bahrain, after coming out on top; of a tough field. Race Results : Below 1. Fernando Alonso / Renault (1) 2. There was a funny incident in the early stages, and I came very close to going out when Massa spun past me in turn 1. After that though, things went smoothly, and I knew that the key time would be around the second stop. I looked after the tyres at the start of the stints, so that I had something left at the crucial moment, and I was very confident that we would be able to do it. After that, I managed the performance, the car was running beautifully and I just concentrated on making no mistakes. The backmarkers were very fair today as well. I think the competition is a little bit closer than we thought overall, but this is the perfect start for the season." Michael Schumacher, Ferrari (2nd): "All in all this is an excellent result and I'm certainly not complaining about finishing second. If someone would have told us during the winter months that this is the way we would have finished the first race of the season, I wouldn't have believed them. Today we must be really pleased with the result. On the other hand, I still have some mixed feelings because it's seems that we could have been ahead and could have won the race. Considering how it ended up, it's now clear that the qualifying lap that wasn't acknowledged in as far as refuelling this morning was concerned, was the decisive factor that played against us. It's a pity, because yesterday I had to back off because of the traffic. In any case it's a great day for us because we know that we have an good car and we have an excellent potential to develop during the course of the season and this is very important. This year the fight for the championship will be very close: there are several good teams, all of which are capable of battling for the title and it's great to be one of them." Kimi Raikkonen, McLaren (3rd): "This is a great result after the disappointment of yesterday, but we have known that the car was very strong all weekend. We thought that we had a chance to score some points today, even though we were starting from the back of the grid, but to get a podium is fantastic, The first few laps were crucial to this result, and luckily I managed to overtake a lot of cars at the first corner; I was up to 13th by lap two even though the cars in front were all lighter than me. We then gained some more places later on as a result of our strategy. The outcome is even more important to the whole team, who have been working so hard throughout the winter, as we didn't know where we were after testing and everyone had been saying that we were struggling. However we really have improved over the past few weeks. It proves that we are competitive and if not for yesterday we could have been even better." Fastest Laps 1. March 13, 200619 yr Author really good read and layout !! I enjoyed this grand prix alot especially during the time of the last pit stop. I coudnt believe shumi didnt get out infront !! Thanks. Well it's really a pity , cause he lost it in the pitlane if you ask me... His last pitstop was 8.9 secs & Fernando's was 7.2 secs.. and at the end of the race the gap between the two was 1.2 secs only so if not for that slightly slower pitstop he could have easily one it by atleast 0.5 of a sec... And he couldn't possibly have pulled an overtaking move either that late in the race cause his brake's were well and truly past their best.
