Arctic Monkeys have paid tribute to the late James Brown this Christmas, a year on from his death.

Brown died on December 25, 2006, aged 73.

The band explained how they had paid tribute to Brown when he was alive, taking the stage to the sound of one of his songs.

“We were big fans of James Brown,” bassist Nick O’Malley told NME.COM.

Frontman Alex Turner added: “The first ever gig we did, we walked onstage to ‘The Payback’. And at college I had a pair of jeans I’d written on in red marker, ‘I’ve got soul and I’m super bad’.”

“It was one of those things [brown’s death] when you heard, you didn’t want to believe it,” O’Malley continued. “A bit like Steve Irwin.”

Alex Turner and Dizzee Rascal have discussed the karaoke party which took place earlier this week as part of the Arctic Monkey's birthday celebrations.

Turner, who was filling in for Radio One DJ Zane Lowe, spoke to Rascal on air about their collaborations at the bash.

The frontman told listeners: "We went out for a bit of fun and games and Dizzee came along, we went out for a bit of karaoke, and I've never seen a crowd so moved.

"You should have seen it, it was chaos! What did we do, mate? 'Regulate' [by Warren G], we did. We regulated alright!”

Talking about Rascal's version of 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor', Turner commented: "It were incredible, it went off. Dizzee stole the show. We might as well have gone off after that!"

Domino Recordings release this ‘jewel-in-a-case’ to mark its 15th anniversary, featuring rarities from your favourite artists, new songs from new signings and hard-to-find B-sides.

‘All The Rage’ is all that’s up and coming in the world of independent music. The album compiles an exciting collection of rarities, hard-to-find B-sides and never released tracks from Domino Recordings’ eclectic roster.

The sampler reflects the history of the label as well as representing its future by showcasing recently signed artists like Animal Collective, Paul Thompson (Franz Ferdinand)’s Correcto, Cass McCombs and Wild Beasts.

Ex-Fridge member Adem’s magnificent Breeders cover from his new album ‘Takes’. Clinic’s eerie disfigured M*A*S*H* styled theme of ‘Christmas’ (taken from last album ‘Funf’). Stephen Malkmus’ ‘Dragonfly Pie’, a plunge into the Pavement man’s fourth solo album.

Pram’s atmospheric waking-but-still-dreaming musical adventure in widescreen ‘Moonminer’.

Brazilian sensations Bonde Do Role and ex-Test-Icicles solo project Lightspeed Champion are also present; Mark E Smith meets Mouse On Mars outfit Von Sudenfed are featured with a B-side never released on CD, as well as a glimpse of Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden’s collaboration with soul legend Steve Reid.

Who else to give this tribute a special dimension than the worldwide acclaimed Arctic Monkeys and sensual rock duo The Kills? The former perform a majestic stripped down version of Shirley Bassey’s ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, a track exclusively available on this sampler.

The Kills offer new single ‘U.R.A. Fever’, recently released as a limited edition 7”. ‘All The Rage’ will be of great appeal to the Domino fanbase, independent music aficionados and Arctic Monkeys worshippers, as well as to people keen to discover the Domino roster for a meagre price.

Reverend reveals Arctics supergroup plan

Friday, February 15 2008, 12:16 GMT | Digitalspy.com

Reverend and the Makers' John McClure has revealed he is forming a supergroup with the Arctic Monkeys.

The singer is teaming up with members of the Sheffield band, Danny Goffey from Supergrass and two members of Mystery Jets to record a charity record.

All the cash raised will go to the Bottletop charity, which helps street children in Brazil, India and Malawi.

"I've got loads of musicians coming together to form a new supergroup," McClure told XFM. "I've only just started recruiting but so far I've got Danny Goffey, some lads from from Arctic Monkeys and the Mystery Jets' drummer and their bassist.

"We're gonna record tracks here in London then take it over to Brazil. A supergroup of Brazilians will put vocals onto our tracks and then our British artists will do the same to their tracks."

I think this has the potential to be pretty good. Would be nice to see who else gets on board with the whole fiasco too. ^_^ I've a feeling there'll be a few more names yet.

WE ARE SCIENTISTS want to poach the Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders for the festival season.

The New Yorkers need a sticks man after Michael Tapper, 29, quit last October.

Bassist Chris Cain, 30, told me: “Matt played with us on the album chart show recently and he fitted right in.

“We got to know the Arctic Monkeys when we did the NME Awards tour with them in 2006.

“After that they asked us to support them on their American tour. Matt got on stage with us a couple of times and played drums on our song Great Escape, and Alex Turner played guitar and sang backing vocals.

“We like cross-pollinating with the Monkeys. We have the same particular tastes in backstage action. We all like to drink lager.

“We’ll definitely be hoping to bump into them during festival season – in particular Matt. We’ve got T In The Park and Oxegen confirmed, so watch out.”

Chris joked: “One thing people probably don’t know about Mr Helders is that despite being in one of the biggest bands in the world he’s always on the look-out for work and a bit of extra cash.

“If you’re a half-decent band you can expect to receive numerous emails from him offering his services and telling you how reasonable his rates are.”

Chris and singer Keith Murray, 30, are now gearing up to showcase their new material on their UK and Ireland tour which kicks off in Dublin on April 7.

Their ace album Brain Thrust Mastery is on course for the Top 10 this week.

Chris said: “We’re really proud of the album. It’s great being back.”

Glad to have you, fellas.

The thing that made me laugh when he played drums for WAS on the album chart show was that they didn't even mention that Helders was playing drums for them!
