well theres no early election, maggie brown was put off by some unfavourable polls!

how ridiculous! he would have won anyway, we ALL know how 'accurate' the polls are... like the 92 election anyone? (labour were supposed to win!).

im dissappointed that he didnt steer his own course here, hes played right into boy camerons hands, giving that little boy a pr victory! handing it to him on a plate!

was maggie brown right to avoid this election?

After the Inheritance Tax thingy Brown's goose was cooked, it was game over, he knew that he was going to lose the election so bottled it

With the economy set to worsen over the next 12 months and the stock market struggling Labour will slip further and further back

Much as I do not like Cameron he is without doubt IMHO a prime minister in waiting

Brown is usless, just looks like he'll be sticking around much longer. <_<

To be fair - would you hand you notice in if you didn't have to?

I have to say it amuses me that some friends who were staunch Labour supporters when they were opposition are now baying for blood and supporting Cameron.

The inheritance tax thing was inpsired, straight for the voters, even people who inheritance tax doesn't affect were fooled by it.

I mean, hand on heart, how many people know if they would pay if they died tomorrow?

tbh am glad they are leaving it till Spring, let the conference hype die down - I mean they are all still on their Summer holidays!! Let them do a little work before they start posing for cameras and convincing us to keep them on their gravy train.

Talk is cheap, but Cameron's 40 minute speech at the Conservative Conference in Blackpool this week, was one of the greatest speeches I've heard in a long time and what he said ticked a lot more boxes for me, then I would have imagined.

I've never liked Brown, being an ex-Blairite, and his uninspiring Leadership could well lead to him losing the next election.

He has certainly scored a spectacular own goal, he allowed the speculation of an early election to circulate, and when it looked good for him in the polls he was going for it, but as soon as the polls realigned themselves he definately bottled it. No doubt he will say he had not called an election therefore he did not change his mind.

He will get mocked for showing weakness, and from a position of strength he has severely shot himself in the foot.

brown wouldnt lose the election if it was called in november, but he would have a reduced majority and it was that he is trying to protect.

i agree with icr, just how many people do we know would actually be effected by the inheritance tax?

camerons full of hot air, he might say the right things (spin) but i doubt he could ever deliver.

craig.... how come you are so anti-labour, yet this lot are more thatcherite then your conservatives?..

Talk means nothing though TiP, not after Blair, who was all about the talking and spin... And look how that turned out....

I started to settle with Brown as PM over the summer on the thought that he would call a snap election this autumn. Now that's all up in shreds again. I just really don't like the idea of a non-democratically elected man running the country who we did not vote for. I just have this little inkling he'll hang on until 2010 before calling another election to extend his premiership that bit longer because he's scared to lose his new train set.

Bit like John Major really.... He was pretty terrified to call an early election as well after Maggie....

I have misgivings about the current conservative leadership and their drift towards the left of centre but just the name Labour is enough to prevent me from putting an X next to their candidate, it would to me be like cheering on Arsenal in a football game or wanting McLaren to win an F1 championship, I physically and mentally can't bring myself to put an X next to a Labour candidate however many misgivings I have about the current conservative leadership

Since the war there have been six changes of PM which were a result of a change of ledership rather than a General Election. Only one of those new PMs called an election soon afterwards. So Brown is simply following precedent. The one difference this time is that we knew at the last election that Blair would stand down at some point.

I don't think it's possible to say Brown made the wrong decision, it would've been too big a gamble with the latest opinion polls (though I think Labour would've just edged a victory when all was said and done). Personally, I think Brown should've waited til next weekend to make an announcement though... the Tories could've fallen in the opinion polls this week for all we know, and Brown would've saved a little bit of face by not running the second the going got tough anyway.

How hilarious would it be if Brown himself abolished/raised the threshold for inheritance tax now!

Would of imagined that Gordon would of won if he went for an election.

Hopefully the decision to delay might encourage a few more to take an interest in politics?

well he reckons that he wants his policies to start to take effect first, he wants to prove himself...

oh the irony at today's pre budget report. Almost sounded like an echo from the Conservative party conference :arrr:

 :arrr:

So now not only is he Bottler Brown, he is Burglar Brown well......

I'm really, really starting to worry that the rate this hypocrite (at least B-Liar never denied using spin) is going, I'm going to be forced to vote for the Conservatives at the next election.

Well at least they appear to be the least pro-Thatcherite party at the moment.

Then what does that make Maggie Brown today, burglaring three of the "new" policies that Cameron announced last week?

The tax on planes rather than individual flights wasn't a new policy. The Tories stole it from the Liberal Democrats. There's nothing inherently wrong with parties stealing policies from other parties. I just wish they'd acknowledge that that's what they're doing.
