Strangly enouth, I was thinking about this a few days ago.

I can renember a few years ago, there was alot about Video Games creating violence, and maybe back then, probally it did.

It has done so before, games turning people crazy, even films do that (like there was an incident about a guy who thought he was Freddy Kruger and killed people in the same way Freddy did).

BUT I dont think this is much of an issue now, with Nintendo Wii's (Family Friendly) and PS3's (not that there is any decent games out) taking over England.

do video games increase child violence? does the graphic scenes corrupt the young and numbs there senses to real life violence?

Probably but don't blame the games blame the child

I watched very violent movies from about the age of 10 and never went and attacked or killed anyone

Games never existed in my youth apart from Space invaders and Pacman so cant comment on games but certainly movies did not bring out violent in my as I had morals

My whole degree is about this

My gut instinct says no ... there are PLENTY of other things out there in the world that'll screw kids up and make them cold blooded killers before a video game in my opinion ...

But, I believe there is also compelling evidence that kids which are exposed to large amounts of violence through any media medium are more prone to violent behaviour - but I don't believe video games or movies are the exclusive factors which are to blame. Maybe kids exposed to violence in the home should be looked at before we try and pawn the blame off onto the media.

Nope I don't believe there's a link between the two at all.

Millions of people watch violent movies and play violent games and by law you should have to be 18 to play them, so it's the parents fault for letting the kids have the games in the first place.

But I honestly think the link between the two is no-existant and people just blame violence on video games because they can.

i thought that they would encourage violence..... but then i rememberd the games we boys played in the mid 60's... cowboys and indians, cops n robbers, ww2 war games... as i saw it kids naturally played games that involve killing 'baddies'.

however..... sitting on ones arse in front of a screen for hours is supposed to have an adverse effect on a kids psyche... now that i can believe!

It's interesting... when I was a kid, people were utterly scandalized by Mortal Kombat because it showed blood splattering in every direction when you hit someone. But compared to the video games these days, that seems like nothing.

I always thought if a video game were to make someone violent, it would be GoldenEye. Running around with all manner of weapon slaughtering people. And it was so damn fun!!

I agree. The lack of excercise and physical stimulation is more likely to affect moods / temperament.

Those affected by violent films and games are likely to be predisposed to such influences anyway.

I do however find it sad that a 4 year old girl yesterday drew me a detailed picture of little green stick men covered in lots of red "dead stuff" ..... and told me it was daddy's game.

...Yeah, and Pac Man made people run around and take little yellow pills....

Sorry, but I just dont accept this argument whatsoever... I've played literally HUNDREDS of video/PC games over the years, including pretty much all the Grand Theft Auto ones.. Frankly all the fuss over "Manhunt 2" is utter nonsense, I've played it, it is a tedious, boring, pointless game

Resident Evil??

There is no such thing as bad kids merely bad parents, the child if the father was responsible would not be watching him play that game and he is clearly not a very good father if he spends hours playing Resident Evil instead of interacting and bonding with his daughter

There is no such thing as bad kids merely bad parents,

spoken like a true non-parent.

you are wrong, kids can be born with 'bad' traits, bad kids do exist and not all bad kids are as a result of bad parenting. take my sister for eg... 2 little girls, ones an angel, ones evil! both have the very same upbringing, both are living with both parents, one behaves, the others got a very naughty/bad streak in her.

Hardly helpful to describe any kid as either an "angel" or "evil" Rob, kids are kids, as individual as anyone else....

What differentiates games from TV and movies these kids see. Oh that's right, it's to cover up the parent's deficiencies of letting their 12 year old child play an 18 rated game -_- and then say they're confused by the big 18 they see on the game covers

well we dont use that discription to their faces <_< , so my discription stands.

As someone who has played through every single bit of some EXTREMELY violent games over the years I think I can definitely say there is absolutely no link whatsoever! I remember reading the instruction book for Perfect Dark when I was 11 and it never had a bad affect on me at all and I've never been a violent person in general. I am one of those people who were really angry over the Manhunt 2 ban as well  and speaking of that a toned down version has been rejected by the BBFC too <_< Importing from Dutchieland awaits :magic:

How can someone be 'born bad'? You're born with no personality, and as you grow, you build up your own personality, which could be good or bad.

Don't mean to sound rude but all this anecdotal stuff ("Video games didn't make ME violent") is pretty useless. Study after study by numerous scientists, psychologists and universities have proven that violent video games do increase aggressive thoughts and behaviors in people of all ages, especially children. I mean this was covered in my Psych 101 class! A simple Google search reveals this is the opinion of the American Psychological Assocation, the American Medical Assocation, University of Minnesota, University of Chicago...

A better discussion is what should be done to prevent it... a better ratings system, more vigilant parents, etc. All of us here were likely well-raised by parents or guardians who countered our appetite for violent video games with discipline :)

You have to have inbuilt violent tendencies in the first place, video games don't make someone who is not a violent personality violent it merely triggers an already violent personality so if games didn't then something else would like a movie or a hip hop record or whatever

Its no use blaming the games or the movies and so on.

But you can blame the parents for letting younger children play with them unsupervised. Most parents have no idea about the content of these games
