October 2, 200915 yr Hi Trevs, really interesting topic! Could you please clarify something - you say that "From 31st Dec 1963, the chart was compiled on a Tuesday" - does that mean it was announced on a tuesday lunchtime in 1964, or did that only start in Sept 67? Also in the event of tied points (and both fell/climbed), does it matter which was a bigger faller or climber in terms of separating positions, or would it be a tied position? Many Thanks!

Also in the event of tied points (and both fell/climbed), does it matter which was a bigger faller or climber in terms of separating positions, or would it be a tied position? Many Thanks! From memory (as Trevs didn`t clarify), although Derek Chinnery compiled the chart on the Tuesday...it wasn`t actually seen until Top Of The Pops on the Wednesday. I believe TOTP got it`s regular Thursday show in 1965, so again the chart wasn`t actually seen by the public until the Thursday night. The Tuesday rundown began on Tuesday 3rd Oct 1967 (when Radio One recorded a rundown with Alan Freeman, for 12.30pm broadcast). At that point, Alan was doing the rundown to "Quite Beside The Point", by The Harry Roberts Sound (Slightly nicked these days, by Colin Berry on Saturday nights on various local BBC Radio Stations). Alan Freeman (from April 1970), used a new version of "At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal", by Brass Incorporated. Both the themes, were of course used on Pick Of The Pops. The Tuesday rundowns were done by Tony Blackburn (from Sept 72), followed by Dave Lee Travis, Johnny Walker (1973/6), Paul Burnett (1976-82), DLT (again, 1982), Mike Smith (1983), and lastly from 1984-87 by Gary Davies. In July 1972 (during a live rundown), DLT set fire to Alan`s rundown sheet with a lighter, as Alan read it out! A situation, that was looked on as a major hazard at Radio One... Tied positions were always messy, and it was only in the earlier years that 2 songs going down were involved in a joint position. Certainly after 1965, Derek Chinnery seperated them.
October 2, 200915 yr "During TOM BROWNE`s run of the TOP 20 on Sundays, PAUL BURNETT sat in for him for a week in June 74, and JOHNNIE WALKER did the Sunday TOP 20, for a week in early Sept 73." So in Tom Browne's years as Top 20 host, which I remember well, did he only take two Sundays off? :o Edited October 2, 200915 yr by Crazy Chris

So in Tom Browne's years as Top 20 host, which I remember well, did he only take two Sundays off? :o No, Chris...Tom was off in Sept 73, June 74, May 76 (Simon Bates 1wk), Sept 76 (Simon Bates 3wks), July 77 (Simon Bates), and Sept 77 (Simon Bates). 9 weeks in total, I believe. Though, some of Tom`s shows were pre-recorded. On Sunday 20th Dec 1975, Tom did the show live with the most terrible cold I ever heard...but he soldiered on. What a great host he was, with such a silky voice too.
October 2, 200915 yr In July 1972 (during a live rundown), DLT set fire to Alan`s rundown sheet with a lighter, as Alan read it out! A situation, that was looked on as a major hazard at Radio One... This appeared on a "bloopers" tape which came with a "25 Years of Radio 1" souvenir book/magazine back in 1992. BTW going back to the initial post the Independent Radio chart show expanded to a Top 40 when Neil Fox took over from David Jensen in August 93.
October 2, 200915 yr BTW going back to the initial post the Independent Radio chart show expanded to a Top 40 when Neil Fox took over from David Jensen in August 93. The actual size of the chart depended where you lived...From the begininng of 1986, in the London Area (and Capital FM) David Jensen also played new entries/risers in the 31-75 part between 4 and 5pm. From 1991 in this first hour, the 31-40 was played in full. From which, some other stations (as well as Capital) joined early.

Though I listened every week I can't remember how he fitted 20 songs in to an hour though! Did he fade some songs out? I mean Bohemian Rhapsody was almost 6 minutes and he had 3 minutes for each. Did he skip one or two songs most weeks? Edited October 2, 200915 yr by Crazy Chris
October 2, 200915 yr Agreed. For me the best chart show host ever and fab voice. Though I listened every week I can't remember how he fitted 20 songs in to an hour though! Did he fade some songs out? I mean Bohemian Rhapsody was almost 6 minutes and he had 3 minutes for each. Did he skip one or two songs most weeks? The only songs ever skipped were the banned ones from Judge Dread/Donna Summer/Sex Pistols et al. Though in 1976, he didn`t play the M & O Band because it was practically a nicked backing track from the original "Latin Hustle" from Eddie Drennon. Also in January 1977, "Bionic Santa" was skipped. They were the only occasions. The trick applied was...if a single was going down between 11-20, then it was faded early. This allowed 10 records in 25 minutes, and the complete top 10 at 6.25! Allowing the full versions of the top 3, just ahead of 6.50. No time for lots of chat...just artist name followed by "while next it`s...." Actually the only major chat in the show was the rundown ahead of the number one, and the odd traffic report. Remember between Oct 1972, and Mar 1974, Tom played 60 records in 3 hours in the "Solid Gold Sixty". Possibly a forerunner of Independant Radio`s later airplay shows...Solid Gold Sixty, played the Top 20 Sales chart at 6pm, and between 4 - 6pm, played the Radio One playlist records, that didn`t feature in the sales top 20. That disappeared in Mar 1974, when Radio One launched the Sunday morning show "All There Is Too Hear" with Paul Burnett, playing the Radio One airplay chart. While Tom Browne continued to do the top 20 at 6pm, for just the solitary hour. By the way, if anyone wants to see a complete list of full BBC Charts prior to 1969, get in touch and i`ll send one to you.
July 21, 201014 yr Just to add though often new entries in the bottom half of the Top 20 were faded early . eg Trammps's Disco Inferno faded just beofre that record's third tune!
July 21, 201014 yr Going back to how the BBC complied their charts pre-69, interesting how in the infamous week of the 3 way tie that they'd put the Bee Gees at joint 1 before it reached number 1 in any of the music papers charts, effectively anticipating it - if only it hadn't made it, there would have been a case of the averaging producing a number 1 from a record not actually rated number 1 anywhere!
