Wigan have elected to sack Chris Hutchings with immediate effect, the Premier League club has announced.

Assistant manager Frank Barlow takes charge on a caretaker basis, starting with Sunday's trip to Tottenham.

In a brief statement on their website, Wigan said a statement from chairman Dave Whelan would follow.

But they did put on record their "immense gratitude" to Hutchings in contributing to the club's "meteoric rise" over the past six seasons.

Hutchings was appointed in May following the resignation of Paul Jewell.

He stepped up from his role as assistant manager under Jewell, who elected to take a break from football.

Hutchings had also succeeded Jewell at Bradford City in 2000, but lasted less than five months after winning one of 12 Premiership games.

This season in the Premier League, Wigan have collected just eight points from 12 matches to be in the relegation zone.

On Saturday they were beaten 2-0 at home by Chelsea.

It was their sixth defeat in succession, with their last league victory coming against Sunderland at the JJB Stadium on 18 August.

It's just a waiting game until Paul Jewell steps back in now...

They may approach Sammy Lee! Thats if he doesn't take up Sam Allardyce's offer to join him as assistant coach at Newcastle.

Surely he'll reunite with Big Sam, it's obvious he's an assistant and not a manager.

The 4th gone of the season then. Will there be anyone left in May?

Apart from Fergie and Wenger I wouldn't be suprised

Thing is though they should be able to stay up with a decent manager as they've got good enough players like Melchiot, Heskey Kirkland (if doesn't get injured) and Sibierski.

And not forgetting arguably their best player; Jason Koumas.

I can't believe how quickly managers come and go these days. The key to success is stability. Just look at Arsenal and Man Utd, and Bolton & Charlton with Allardyce & Curbishley. And Everton. What they did with David Moyes was fantastic and what Tottenham should've done. They qualified for the champions league but got knocked out of both that and the UEFA Cup straight away and were bottom of the league. They kept faith with him and are now back in Europe and are as well placed as anyone to challenge the big 4.

Stuart Pearce the new Wigan manager apparently

oh dear :( he should stay with the England U21's

and Jewell is being linked with Boro if Southgate doesn't improve soon

Source?

A journalist, his area of speciality is motor racing but he is widely connected in general sports media

Sammy Lee was my first boyfriend! He's too nice to be a manager ... he's best playing good cop / bad cop with Big Sam!

Norma!
