Well it's becoming increasingly obvious that McLaren will be sacked [or resign] but who do you think the FA should go for?

I wanted O'Neill originally when Sven left but they didn't go for him and I doubt they'll go for him now. Stuart Pearce would be a good choice but I don't think he's ready yet.

And it's 99.9% certain the FA will go for a high profile foreign manager methinks.

I want O'Neill.

Ideally Mourinho, but he's said he'll only ever manage Portugal which is fair enough tbh.

I want McNeil, he will turn the team round

The option that Brian Barwick & co (FA really must stand for f**k all afterall) turned down and the one that I wanted 18 months ago:

Manager: Martin O Neill with Assistant Manager: Stuart Pearce.

It'll cost too much for the FA to get O'Neill to release him from his contract at Villa, and then it'll cost loads to release McLaren from his contract.

There's some world class managers who aren't contracted to any clubs at the moment. They'll go for one of those first before trying to get anyone else I reckon.

Billy McNeil? He'd never take it.

Oh the irony when the papers tomorrow start bandying around high profile foreign coaches after insisting the FA choose an Englishman.

They won't admit they were wrong though...everyone can plainly see that England just don't make football managers any more. The days of Paisley, Ramsay, Robson etc. are long gone. Do you seriously think Redknapp or Allardyce would be any use? Two wide boy types whose best work is done in the transfer market and haven't exactly had high pressure jobs up till now (although Allardyce is probably feeling the heat on Tyneside).

I bet Paul Jewell gets installed as a favourite too. If he didn't fancy the pressure of returning to Wigan then I can't see him doing the national job.

My money's on Mark Hughes btw.

O'Niel is so overrated, he won a few SPL titles with Celtic, a monkey could do that and guided Leicester to a mid-table finish.

There is no one good enough available as all the good ones are taken and are going to euro's. The only one I can think of is Lippi but everyone seems so obsessed with having an English manager.

That's absolute pish. Don't you recall him taking Celtic to a European final? This was back when Scottish teams didn't stay in Europe past Christmas...he rejuventated European football in Scotland which, in turn, has led to a revival of the national team.

He's also a master of cup tournaments including winning the league cup with Leiecester. He was my shout for the job 18 months ago and that was the main reason...you want someone to get past the quarter-finals? Look no further than him.

So every manager that takes a team to a cup final is amazing?

Aston Villa have hardly been brilliant since he's been there, he's bought c**p players and they play football to almost compete with England on crapness.

O'Neill is a fantastic manager and I reckon he'd do really well for England. However, I kind of don't want him because he's made Villa my favourite Premiership team by some distance and I really want to see if he can be a huge success there.

Martin O'Neill would be an amazing manager for England, heck the guy is practically growing homegrown talent at Villa and turning them into superstars [£15 Arsenal offer for Agbonlahor anyone?].

Plus he's definately one of, if not THE best defensive coach in the country today. Look at his back line at Villa and then look at how solid the defensive performances are. And solidity at the back is definately something England could do with. I have 100% faith that the guy would make some long-needed chemistry being Terry and Ferdinand happen.

He's had limited funds, he's had to get rid of some atrocious players brought in by O'Leary etc and Villa don't have the reputation they once had, so players are being tempted elsewhere.

O'Neill's main talent lies in his man management. He learned that from Brian Clough. Clough never managed England and this is the closest you'll ever get to that. McLaren looks and acts like your dad's embarrassed mate.

No, not every manager that takes a team to a cup final is 'amazing' but those that take an average side to a position lightyears beyond their dreams are to be cherished.

Bertie Voghts

Martin O'Neill is a fantastic manager but he is a clever clever guy and nobody's puppet. Not sure he's the type the FA want.....

William Hills:

Next England manager?

Jose Mourinho 5/1

Martin O' Neil 11/2

Luis Scolari 6/1

Gus Hiddink 7/1

Stuart Pearce 10/1

Marcello Lippi 12/1

Alan Shearer 12/1

Sam Allardyce 16/1

Harry Redknapp 16/1

Fabio Capello 16/1

Arsene Wenger 16/1

Alan Curbishley 16/1

Steve Coppell 20/1

Paul Jewell 25/1

Steve Bruce 33/1

If I was to bet I'd go for Fabio Cappello.

smart money on Alan Shearer  It was in the gossip pages of Ceefax (various papers) over the weekend he would like to manage England.

Jose Mourinho 5/1 <- would be lovely  but I highly doubt we a) could afford him and B) him choosing England ahead of Portugal as his first international post.

Martin O' Neil 11/2 <- England 0 - 0 The Other Team A Ratehr Rubbish Team 2 - 2 England, etc etc.

Luis Scolari 6/1 <- unlikely after the way the press hounded him last time

Gus Hiddink 7/1 <- he's staying with Russia

Stuart Pearce 10/1 <- he really needs to stay with the U21's for now

Marcello Lippi 12/1 <- first one I'd like and which is more realistic

Alan Shearer 12/1 <- Mark Hughes started as a manager with Wales. But the high responsibility and pressure with England now isn't the right time.

Sam Allardyce 16/1 <- not exactly working wonders with Newcastle

Harry Redknapp 16/1 <- just can't see Redknapp taking it with how Pompey are doing. I Wouldn't say no though.

Fabio Capello 16/1 <- Yes please! If R. Madrid don't appreciate him winning La Liga England can have him ^_^

Arsene Wenger 16/1 <- he said he won't and he won't

Alan Curbishley 16/1 <- I'd rather start supporting San Marino

Steve Coppell 20/1 <- On the fence, don't think he'd hack it at international level right now

Paul Jewell 25/1 <- no thank you, he wouldn;t be able to whip the celebrities and primadonnas in the dressing room out

Steve Bruce 33/1 <- they might as well have Santa Claus next.

Should I just take this time to wave to Sven :naughty: who only ever lost one qualifier

My money's on Mark Hughes btw.

No odds on Sparky?
