I know what you mean. It's not like people shouldn't be planning ahead during the ongoing contest but I've never seen the point of saying "I'm sending THIS next time" while people are still voting in the current contest - during the semis or finals. It just seems courteous to keep schtum until the contest over. We have enough songs to take in during the voting for the semis and the final without having 'potential' entries for the next contest being posted everywhere.

Maybe this is something to do with the contests becoming CONSTANT these days, people feel the need to get their hands on a song as early as possible. The reservation/confirmation threads are opened minutes after the results of the previous contest have been revealed. It's nothing that can be fixed, we need the reservation threads up early as it would be unfathomable for us to expect things like National Finals/revelations of potential entries to happen without people stepping on each others toes now that we have 50 entries a month.

agree

also it seems to be a way of grabbing the latest leaks by randomly saying somewhere (albeit where as many people as possible will see) 'I want the latest Leona vs. Armand Van Helden smash for BJSCXVII and nobody had better steal it from me'. It's almost like some people have in their mind 'reserved' certain artists and tracks via word of mouth in the forum before any of the threads actually open, whereas it really should be first come first served, whoever gets to said song first when those threads open

I'm all for this rule... I never know what is going to be my next entry next month (only very seldom-ly). And, normally, people should concentrate on the Final (I could understand it if people started discussing their potential entries if they DNQ'ed) and Semifinals ( Does it mean they don't care about the contest they are in?!).

I think we should set some ground rules here then, rather than banning it outright. Maybe only discussing next contest's entries if you DNQ, and maybe only in a special thread. I rally don't think a total ban is the way to go.

By the way, I'm sending Artist X - Song Y and no-one better steal it from me :kink:

then again, it already feels like we are tightly monitored in here when it's supposed to be 'fun'...and to introduce more rules and restrictions will just put people off joining and participating, but this is an issue for the mods and I'm no longer one of them :kink:

I don't mind threads going slightly off topic, as long as it's not due to spam...having to place all random discussion in the Green Room seems a bit restrictive at times as conversations on forums always go off on tangents and it would hardly be good practice to keep moving posts in and out of threads because it would ruin the flow of things and natural progression of conversations and ideas

TBH I am quite confident that those various Liam's "OMG I found my entry for BJSCXVII. I'm DEFFFFFFOOOOO sending it" have been seen all over the forum, not just the Green Room :heehee:

It doesn't annoy me much but i'd rather see no posts at all than reading the ones i exampled.

:o

Artist X is an Ashtonise notation :o

:kink: :P

 Sorry, Artist Y then! I actually posted the name before and though I'd better edit it :kink:
Then Z is mine :P

I came up with it to build some hype around Gabby C lol. Then to keep Cinderella Theory's identity hidden

Oh  I would say that CT are more of an X than Gabs, but she's an xxx

If I was running the BJSC these would be the rule (changes) I would operate (to improve???) the contest:

1. Songs that have made the UK Top 20 within the last 36 months are not allowed. If a song is entered that subsequently ends up climbing into the UK Top 20 (including the midweeks of the Final Week) it will be disqualified. Hence those playing have to take into account selecting a popular track that will soon chart might back fire on them if it becomes too successful too quickly.

2. The thread for Official Confirmation Entries for the following contest should be opened by the previous host more or less immediately after the Semi Final results as part of their duty (to stop members waiting for the next host to open this thread at the time of their choosing). All discussion of "I'm thinking of entering X for BJSC n+1" will be banned until then.

3. In the Official Song Contest confirmation thread you must include a link to the track in question (to stop people looking at the future release schedule and avoid bagging a BJSC friendly track in advance of its first airplay/internet leakage). However you will be allowed a maximum of one change only (to stop players switching from track to track, so making it tactical whether or not to select the track you want right a way or whether you ang on to discover something better).

4. I would scrap the Artist Reservation Thread. To avoid members nominating 5 artists, some of which are tactical and upsetting others, then finding out whilst they've been offline their first choice has been unreserved and reserved by someone else.

some of those I agree with but some would be impossible to implement...

1. Seeing as picking tracks due for release in the next few weeks increasingly seems to be the most popular way of picking an entry now (which is a shame as the thing I've always loved most about this contest is hearing new songs/artists I'd never get the opportunity to hear elsewhere, like all of Kath's entries for example) this would potentially annoy a lot of participants as you can't predict when a song might get randomly added to iTunes...this would without a doubt make people think twice about sending a future release but it would drive more people out of the contest I think.

2. Interesting idea, could work ^_^

3. Another good idea, which I agree with. By reserving an artist for a potentially awful yet-to-leak song, you might be unfairly preventing somebody else using another song by said artist

4. I think it would be very interesting if we were only allowed to reserve one artist actually, would solve a lot of problems, but no doubt create a ton more...

I'm not sure that any of these could be implemented without some mass argument/walkout though so its probably best to leave it as it is...

I think it'd be better to allow reserving artists that feature in a concrete song if this song is (e.g.) Quotosibb XVI.

Overally, these ideas would have solved some problems. But, as Rich said, it's hard to implemement them because they will cut the main source of finding entries for many people, i.e. the Release Schedule

i would love to ban entries that were being released within 9weeks of the final week at time of confirmation

go on then mod-man :kink:

joking of course, it would put too big a spanner in the works for this contest to cope with and I think it may implode :o maybe I'm being overdramatic but in this contest alone we have around 15 songs that are due out in the next couple of months or so, and most of these are amongst the favourites to win...really only Serebro and Nadine have hauled themselves up to the very top end of the odds without any pre-release hype

my odds are based around a load of factors and I have to take into account existing fanbases of songs/artists from comments I've seen around Buzzjack in the various genre forums etc...

i couldn't do it because it would be far to unpopular a move.

I think it would be good, encourage people to look for unknown stuff which is what the contest is about, i'm pretty fed up of putting effort in and finding stuff like Lorelei Carlson only to be beaten by some lazy f***er who just took something off the release schedule.

it's a catch 22 in a way. Put this rule in, say bye bye to the lazy $h!ts, don't put it in and risk saying bye bye to people like you, rich and myself.

I can understand people wanting to do well and get a good result, but honestly, doing well with an unknown song/artist is so gratifying...coming 19th with Thermostatic, but knowing that I'd introduced it to a good few people was far more satisfying than coming 8th with the Andreas Johnson song that everybody already knows (god know why I even sent that ). Bearing that in mind, coming top five with the then unknown Pixie, Untouched, Sanna Nielsen, The Sound Of Arrows and Uh Huh Her was incredible...

I'd rather come last in the semi than send an impending UK release, purely on the basis that it wouldn't feel like 'a Rontvian entry' and my entries have to have a certain orginal spark to them in my mind for me to even consider them...so if in six months we have 49 songs off the release schedule and FSR Rontvia's unknown song, then so be it :heehee: that said, if it got to that point, I reckon I'd have to leave -_- Still, I have made some FANTASTIC new discoveries this month (see my chart :kink:) and I will be rewarding points accordingly

I'm quite worried about my 12 now because you like Kathaldazia track that much :kink:
