OMG!! What a fantastic Top 10!!! I remember To You I Belong and She Wants You - i brought both singles. And I've got Cher and Steps and I loved End of the Line as well.

Makes me feel kinda sick when i saw that this was 9 years ago. When everyone was talking about When You Believe, i really thought it was released in the mid-nineties not 1998. I feel really old now and wondering where the years have gone

Some really good songs there, like the R.E.M. and Beck ones!. I remember looking at this on BBC teletext at the time.

The Fat Les song!.

I read somewhere the original sold just over 200k in total. Can anyone verify this?
To think that Steps would not get to number 1 until the next year
To think how long Steps had to wait to get to the #1 cos of Cher! Oh well can't complain - both were million sellers!
It's odd that Steps fell as low as No.8 having debuted at No.2 before climbing to No.1 :o I could easily listen to every song in that top 10 all day long apart from Jay-Z and Billie...some great ballads there

1998 was a great year for music  The whole top 10 is fab except Boyzone and even they weren't as bad as c**p like Soulja Boy, 50 Cent etc.

I want those days back.

I loved Billie's song as well - and the b-sides for the single were Last Christmas and It Take Two!

1 (N) To You I Belong B*WITCHED

Brilliant ballad, by far their best single and one of the best No.1 singles of the 1990's

2 (1) Believe CHER

See above comment but replace ballad with dance song

3 (N) She Wants You BILLIE PIPER

Awful song, Billie's only good song was Honey To The Bee

4 (N) When You Believe MARIAH CAREY & WHITNEY HOUSTON

I've always liked this song though a lot of people don't remember it...Leon's version isn't bad but not as good as this

5 (N) End Of The Line HONEYZ

This should have been a bigger hit...just as good as Finally Found. Their first 4 or 5 singles were all excellent

6 (3) When You're Gone BRYAN ADAMS & MELANIE C

A brilliant duet and first solo outing for Melanie C

7 (2) Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) JAY-Z

Awful, I hate the sample

8 (8) Heartbeat / Tragedy STEPS

Tragedy is very catchy but I always preferred Heartbeat which I thought was an excellent ballad

9 (5) Big Big World EMILIA

Gorgeous song, it could have been a lot better with better lyrics because the melody and strings are sublime

10 (6) I Love The Way You Love Me BOYZONE

Boyzone's 3 best singles came in 1998 in my opinion; All That I Need, No Matter What and this one are all brilliant songs and far better than their first few singles

11 (10) Miami WILL SMITH

Never liked this song

12 (N) Always Have, Always Will ACE OF BASE

First single I ever bought (on cassette) and should have been a top 10 hit

13 (9) Up And Down VENGABOYS

Very basic song...who would have expected them to have 4 more top 3 hits the following year!

14 (4) No Regrets / Antmusic ROBBIE WILLIAMS

Never heard Antmusic but No Regrets was good by Robbie standards...nice backing vocals

15 (7) Take Me There BLACKSTREET / MYA featuring MASE

This was ok

16 (N) Dumb BEAUTIFUL SOUTH

Poor follow up to Perfect 10, this was a very boring song

17 (N) The Greatest Love You'll Never Know LUTRICIA McNEAL

Not a fan of this but her first 3 singles were excellent

18 (14) I'm Your Angel CELINE DION & R. KELLY

Another power ballad from 2 'American Greats'...this wasn't bad

19 (12) I Want You '98 SAVAGE GARDEN

Why was this re-released??? To capitalise on the success of their other 2 1998 singles...shame it got a place lower than it originally did

20 (15) War Of Nerves ALL SAINTS

This song massively grew on me once it had left the chart...I now think it was underrated
