Posted January 7, 200817 yr From Sky News: This year's Golden Globes ceremony is reportedly to be cancelled after actors vowed to boycott the event in support of striking Hollywood writers. The widely-watched film and television honors gala is one of Hollywood's biggest ceremonies before the Oscars in February. The Hollywood Foreign Press, which organises it, had hoped to announce a resolution that would permit the awards show to take place with the creative community present. The Los Angeles Times, quoting an email sent by broadcasters to studios, reported that the traditional televised dinner and prize presentation had been scrapped in favour of a press conference and a scaled-back red carpet event. The fate of the Golden Globes - due to be held in Beverly Hills on Sunday - had been hanging in the balance ever since striking writers vowed to erect picket lines around the awards show last week. On Friday, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced that its members would not cross picket lines set up by writers, who are locked in a bitter dispute with film and television producers. The actors union's decision immediately called into question plans for the black-tie dinner and awards presentations, which are normally televised live. Hollywood screenwriters have been on strike since November 5, after the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to agree terms for a new contract.
January 7, 200817 yr Oh my god :o its cancelled...Thats gotten be a huge push for the Hollywood writers strike
January 8, 200817 yr Oh my god :o its cancelled...Thats gotten be a huge push for the Hollywood writers strike Exactly! While although it's disappointing, it's a big step towards this strike ending. Now if the Oscars were to be cancelled too...
January 8, 200817 yr Now if this doesn't help to end the strike at all it'll be interesting to see what happens to the Oscars...
January 9, 200817 yr If the Oscars were cancelled that would be much bigger news and maybe end the dispute. Either way, I want Ugly Betty back, so they must sort it soon

January 9, 200817 yr GOOD!! I'm so glad that this has happened (and let's face it, we could quite easily live without another disgusting piece of industry schmoozing anyway.. Is it important? No, it's not, writers getting a fair deal for their creativity and their efforts is important..).. It might actually force these stupid exec arseholes to stop being so bloody pig-headed and actually give the writers their fair share of the VAST profits from globally syndicated TV shows... It really does hearten me to see the both the Screen Actors and the Directors guilds BOTH standing firm with their writer colleagues and refusing to cross a picket line... Workers' solidarity actually IS still alive and kicking to a small extent.... And it also proves to me that most actors and directors essentially view these industry baubles as being pretty damned unimportant in the grand scheme of things when there is a real issue at stake.... I hope the Oscars gets hit too....
January 11, 200817 yr This is awful, but also good as it will surely be the begining of the end for the strike. I really hope it is resolved before the Oscars, as it would be such a shame for something a legendary as the Academy Awards to be cancelled. Why the fukk don't they just give the writers the extra pit of money they are asking for. Surely they are losing a bloody fortune because of this strike, so I do not get why they are still refusing to pay.

I doubt the Oscars will be cancelled as absolutely everything will be done to make sure they go ahead, and hopefully the strike will be over by then. Good news though, the writers and studios are re-entering negotiations tomorrow so hopefuly a conculsion can be arranged within the next couple of weeks.
January 12, 200817 yr It seems the writers are winning out, a few shows are paying writers what they are demanding. Would imagine that the paying of writers will spread.
