Posted January 8, 200817 yr Didn't know where else to post this but it really bothers me :) Here's what i mean, i recently went on a school trip with some other AS students and 2 teachers to Berlin and on the flight back, the elderly gentleman in front of me and two friends got very.... angry. For example, i got the magazine out of the seat pocket and got shouted at for kicking the chair, then later in the flight my friend was putting his tray table up and he was doing it really gently as to assure not to bother the gentleman, but the second he clicked it back in, the man turned round and gave him a right talking too! Are teenagers toady, through the media of the useless ASBOs, shown as stereotypical yobs to everyone? Cause i'd like to believe me and my friends are not 'yobs' (except maybe Jark ) - He knows im joking :) Opinions?
January 8, 200817 yr Actually, I've seen reports in several newspapers in Scotland recently which say that councils in Scotland at any rate are issuing FAR more ASBOs to over-25s than ANY other age group..... The facts seem to shatter the assumptions that teenagers are the problem within society... ASBOs are just a piece of c**p anyway, not worth the paper they're written on tbh.... -_-
January 8, 200817 yr I guess so...people will just assume that groups of us are going to cause some trouble, especially if we wear hoods. I can understand that I'd be worried if I saw someone covering their faces or something but that doesn't meant they're gonna do something. Maybe they're jealous because we've got another 70yrs plus ahead of whilst they'll croak in the next 10-20yrs.
January 8, 200817 yr you cant lump every teenager under the same banner.... yes some are yobs, nothing new there...
January 8, 200817 yr its just the same as stereotyping old people as stinking of wee and cats isnt it. Not every teenager will be a yob, but the ones who are get talked about more, for example, Teen yob rob's shop, is more likely to get printed in the paper than Teen helps out at local care home in spare time. So people are more likely to think that all teens are yobs because thats what we hear about more

It seems that the Press etc. seem to like to focus on what teenagers do wrong instead of what they do right.. Which means a lot of kids who don't cause trouble are branded as yobs because of were they are brought up or who they hang about with for example, which isn't very fair.
January 8, 200817 yr I completely agree! But sadly it isn't going to stop. Like pink_princess said, the good things that kids do are never covered by the media, its always the bad things just because it sells well, so people think we're all like that. Whenever I go into shops with my friends we always get watched by the shopkeeper like we're bound to steal something. And the thing is, most teenagers aren't like that, it's just the ones that are that bring on the stereotype.
January 8, 200817 yr Some of the rudest behaviour I've seen recently has been from elderly people. In my local M&S last week, an elderly woman wanted something from a shelf which was too high for her to reach. Fair enough, if she'd asked anyone I'm sure they'd be only too happy to reach it for her. But she decided to turn to a young shelf-stacker and say in an aggressive manner "How am I supposed to reach that?". The lad politely offered to reach it for her and promptly did so. Did she say thankyou? No, she just said - even more aggressively - "I want another one". After he had got another item, she still didn't bother to say thankyou. Of course, many older people are very polite. This just demonstrates that it's wrong to generalise about any age group. I've seen many examples of very polite and considerate behaviour from younger people. In fact, I've probably seen more good behaviour from young people than bad.

Shopkeepers/workers shouldnt only watch the teens tho, We were trained at Morrisons to watch everybody because you can never tell who is gonna shoplift. A few weeks ago an old guy was caught shop lifting loads of bacon and painkillers!
January 9, 200817 yr I don't think you should judge someone's behaviour on their age - yobs are yobs whatever age they are and if the elderly guy had been so rude to me for no reason, then you have every right to be just as rude back to him. Old people, I find, expect respect - well, you should never expect it. What cheeses me off is when you hold a door open for a lady.... and she walks though without saying 'thankyou'. If this happens, I always ensure I say, very loudly as I pass "Thankyou very much to you, too"..... usually drives the point home. Rude people are rude and discourteous at all ages.. and all should be treated with the contempt their behaviour deserves, whether they be 8 or 80.

January 9, 200817 yr While I agree with most of what has been said here the elderly deserve more allowances to be made for them Were it not for the elderly we would be goose stepping our way to work in the mornings while wearing nazi uniform, the elderly and their efforts in the war are the reason why we have a lot more freedom in this country today so they deserve respect, so what if they are a bit grumpy, most have a number of health problems and ailments and are not as mobile as younger people so if they are a bit grumpy who wouldn't be ? grumpy teenagers are in good health and very mobile, f*** if I was 84 years old and had ailments and shuffled about I would be a miserable old bugger too, society has to respect its elders, they have earned that respect in the war

January 10, 200817 yr I'm seen as a yob. For example, if I'm walking down a path, people will move out of the way, instead of me moving out of the way for them. Which I suppose is all good and that, but I hate the fact that I intimidate people.

Which I suppose is all good and that, but I hate the fact that I intimidate people. Joshipoo I just can't imagine you intimidating anyone. Hmmmm but then I don't know what you look like. It's a matter of perception isn't it? The press don't help but why do a lot of teenagers seem to congregate in gangs in front of local shops? There's never a 'lone' hoodie. There's always at least half a dozen of them. Usually more. I actually feel quite intimidated walking past them. My mum is absolutely terrified. What is it, safety in numbers? Needing to belong to a gang? And on cold winter nights with the rain falling horizontally they're still there. What's all that about? Why ain't they at home in front of the fire like all sensible folk? I sound old. <_<
January 11, 200817 yr I give everyone a chance, I am not just rude to people for no reason. If someone helps me out I am going to say thanks no matter how big or small the deed is...and I would expect the same courtesy from anyone else. If people are rude to me, I am not afraid to be rude right back, life is too short to get ran over by ignorant people.
January 11, 200817 yr Do you think it is a perception of teenagers world wide - or just British teeneagers? On my recent holiday the hotel owner commented half way through holiday that he wasn't sure my sons' were English teenagers - they hadn't been out drinking in the local bars - they drank coke at dinner - they were polite and answered him when he spoke to them - no one had complained about noise from them and they were at breakfast by 8am each morning ready to be on first lift skiing. He confessed to having been worried when I turned up at his door with 2 6' hoodied creatures. Why?? They also were spoken to unfairly by another passenger on the flight home. When I walk past large groups of hoodies, whilst I agree they can seem intimidating, I am determined not to judge - and have yet to encounter and problems with them. Dare I say once again the 'media' has attempted to create another monster, although teenagers have had bad press since the 50s so is nothing new. (Apparently my dad's winklepicker shoes meant he was trouble - Edited January 11, 200817 yr by ICR
January 11, 200817 yr Do you think it is a perception of teenagers world wide - or just British teeneagers? then again do teenagers exist any more (that is in the idea that teenagers were invented in about 1956 with the birth of rock n roll and milk bars/youth culture - rather than the spef age)?? my bro mentioned that all the rock fans seem to be 14 now are acting like the rock fans who were 21 when he was that age at Uni and so a generation has skipped. and my mum is convinced that freshly squeezed is aimed at 12 year olds (esp as it comes on after the hoobs or the trecle people  ). they might have a point.
January 12, 200817 yr YES! You have no idea how frustrating it is to have the shop keeper follow you ALL THE TIME! One time i got so annoyed i said to the keeper to f*** off cos i aint some lil snack for you paedos to feed off. I can just barely walk out the shop without getting searched and im like wtf?! i went to the police station once and the officer asked me if i was there to sign on (ASBO curfew for those who dont know) and if she wasnt an officer i wouldve gone f*** OFF!!! im tired of being treated like everyother skank out there.
