Posted January 27, 200817 yr A major shake up of drink drive laws could see the introduction of random breath tests for motorists. Ministers are set to unveil the final plans within weeks, as they push forward tougher enforcement to cut the number of alcohol-related deaths on the roads. Current law prevents officers from carrying out breath tests unless a motorist has been driving erratically, has been involved in an accident or committed another offence while driving, such as having a faulty tail light or speeding. But under the new proposals, a checkpoint could be set up anywhere where there was a reasonable belief that drink or drug-impaired driving may happen – including near pubs and clubs. Would you co-operate with being breathalysed at a police checkpoint? Are the plans a step too far? Or is a crackdown necessary to bring the message home to younger motorists? January 27, 200817 yr yes I have nothing to hide. There is absolutely NO excuse for drink driving and I strongly believe that the legal limit should be removed - NO alcohol should be consumed. Everyone is different and reacts to different alcoholic drinks in different ways - no limit is safe. It doesn't take much to lose control / concentration and kill - accidents happen - but are more likely under the influence of alcohol Edited January 27, 200817 yr by ICR
January 27, 200817 yr The alcohol level should be cut to ZERO there is no excuse to drink and drive, if you can afford to run a car you can afford a taxi on a night out, the limit should be cut to zero and instant bans bought in for anyone having consumed any alcohol I have nothing to hide so the police can breath test me no worries
January 27, 200817 yr Yes, I will not drive if I have had ANY alcohol, a driver has a responsibility to themselves, their passengers and other road users, there should be a ZERO tolerence on drink driving.
January 27, 200817 yr Everyone is different and reacts to different alcoholic drinks in different ways - no limit is safe. I agree and I also agree that the limit should be zero alcohol. There is no excuse to drink and drive.
January 28, 200817 yr I think it is a good idea, as long as that is all they checked for. I would not agree with them taking it as far as searching my car or something, because I could see it being taken to the next level.
January 28, 200817 yr i'd comply, i wait a good 12hours after a night out before i even think about looking for the car keys
January 28, 200817 yr omg i cant believe this.... id comply because id have too.. but i see NO justification for pulling over drivers who are driving perfectly soundly! yes compulsary tests for drivers who ARE giving cause for concern... but nothing else. i see grimly is posting atm as well, i can guess his reply!

January 29, 200817 yr but i see NO justification for pulling over drivers who are driving perfectly soundly! I'm with you on that one totally mate... I rather smell another agenda here actually.. Aren't motorists who are being pulled over by Police for speeding, etc actually required to give a sample of DNA...? There is the distinct stench of "Mission Creep" about this whole thing.... True story - a mate of mine got pulled over for a faulty back headlight (which he wasn't aware of..), the cops breathalized him and actually requested his DNA.. Now, he hadn't committed an offence, wasn't suspected of a criminal offence, so he politely refused saying that if they wanted to make an issue of it, they could call in at his office with a court order and proceded to hand the officer his business card - my mate is a LAWYER.....  But still, makes you wonder dunnit...
January 29, 200817 yr ...And another thing - why all this emphasis purely on motorists, there are a lot of cyclists out there who are a total fukkin' menace on the roads, they seem to think they have a god-given right to ignore a red light ffs..... <_< Not only that, half the buggers dont have proper lights on their bikes either, I seriously doubt most of them even TOOK a cycling proficiency test...
January 29, 200817 yr i dont drive drunk. Ohhh I said drink and drive never said you was drunk. Half the time you're as good as anyway.
