In 1982 the world's first compact disc was produced at a Philips factory in Germany, sparking a global music revolution.

More than 200 billion CDs have been sold worldwide since then and it remains the dominant format despite the growth in digital downloads.

The CD was jointly developed by Philips and Sony and the disc has also become a key storage method for computer users.

The first CD produced was The Visitors by Abba.(so the BBC said)

However I think they did not overtake the sales of vinyl until about 1992/1993.

Can you remember the first CD album you bought, and the last vinyl album you bought before you switched to cd’s.

I cannot remember the first one I bought, will have to go and have a think.

not sure about my last vinyl, i didnt buy many albums from the mid 80's onwards as i wasnt overly keen on contemporary music and was busy back-catalogueing my rare 60's material.

Liveandirect by Adamski with my Christmas money in 1990!

Depeche Mode - Songs Of Faith & Devotion back in 1998 when I turned 10 & I've been a mega fan of theirs ever since.

Bar that, my family probably only really brought The Macarena as the CD single for silly parties.

Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits in 1990 when I got my first hi-fi with CD.

I dont remember the first CD that I brought for myself. I used to get them as presents for xmas etc but I dont remember my first.

I remember I always used to listen to my mum's Rod Stewart CD's tho :funky:

I think the first CD artist album i bought was Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way in 1993.
The first CD album I bought with my own money was Hits 99 (which came out December 1998)
I got a CD hi-fi player for my 16th birthday, so naturally wanted state of the art music to play on so called state of the art technology I bought Beatles - Sgt Peppers..... & Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (2CDs for £25 back in 1987!).

I was late in getting a CD player, so I think the first CD I bought was Manic Street Preachers "Everything must go" in 96.

Mind you made up for it now, got loads.

I bought TWO CD's shortly after getting my first ever CD player (for my 13th birthday I think). They were Waking Up The Neighbours by Bryan Adams (containing the perenial number 1 Everything I Do I Do For You) and We Can't Dance by Genesis. Two good albums that I still listen to.

Whitney Houston debut my first CD album, and Kim Wilde's 'Never Trust A Stranger' first CD single; both 1988. ^_^

(tended not to buy vinyl albums - opting for cassette albums instead)

The first ever CD I bought was Now 21 in 1992! I remember it vividly - and it cost £17.99 - which 16 years on seems stupidly expensive! It had on some killer tracks like Shakesphere Sister 'Stay' (this was the first single I ever bought) and Opus 2 3 'It's a Fine Day'. Mr Big anr Right Said Fred, however, weren't the best ones on it!...

Now I have well over a 1000 CDs and I still buy them to this day!

Bought my first CD player in 1988, and bought 2 CDs the same day:

ABC - The Lexicon Of Love

Big Audio Dynamite - Big Audio Dynamite

Still two of my favourite albums.

Savage Garden's self-titled CD. :o Gosh, I was young...maybe...7? Would have been 1998 then.

I was a real vinyl junkie for most of my record-buying youth, I got a fair amount of cassettes as well (for my Walkman  ..) I didn't really start buying CDs until the early 90s... First one I think was Sebadoh "III" or Jesus and Mary Chain "Honey's Dead".....
