Just thinking about "White Lines", by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel. It entered the top 75, in Feb 1984, and took 25 weeks or so to get to a high of number 7...now according to Richard Skinner, on the top 40, in 1984, the record spent most of the year, in the top 100.

Infact it entered te top 100, on tues 8th Nov 1983!

The full run: 85 - 60 - 63 - 75 - re - re - re - re - re - 93 - 93 - 77 - 84 - 74 - 59 - 52 - 53 - 52 - 49 - 57 - 55 - 56 - 58 - 55 - 52 - 56 - 52 - 48 - 51 - 52 - 46 - 36 - 21 - 12 - 10 - 9 - 8 - 7 - 7 - 10 - 9 - 10 - 13 - 18 - 20 - 23 - 31 - 39 - 41 - 52 - 55 - re - re - 77 - 75 - 77 - 99 - 88 - 96 - 83 - 73 - re - 83 - 85

I don`t think we could beat that run! 38 weeks to get to number 7! It has to be said, it was obviously still in the top 200, when it dropped out of the top 100, and re-entered just like Sinitta!

Can we beat it? I can`t think of anyone, that has????

Leann Rimes came close to it in 1998, with How Do I Live, it peaked at no.7 and spent something like 25 weeks on the chart..

the only one I can think of that came near was Blue Monday by New Order, from 1983:

37-24-17-14-14-12-13-17-18-26-32-45-51-57-65-62-62-(79-82-77-78)-74-57-60-53-44-37-20-12-10-{9}-12-15-18-25-38-50-58-

x-x-x-x-65-52-57-75-(82-91-95-96-88-89-95-OUT)

it took 31 weeks to reach a peak of #9 and spent a total of 5 years inside the industry only top 200, only disappearing once the song had become available as a 7" in 1988 and demand for the single finally seemed to come to an end.

Hard to tell which one's odder - it turning around, or it spending three weeks at No4 on its way to the top.

it reminds me of Heartbeat / Tragedy by Steps which meandered around the top 10 before reaching #1...

from Polyhex

By the time Tragedy reached #1 it had already sold 520,000 copies, one of the biggest sales a song had managed prior to reaching to #1 - Never Ever had sold the most, over 800,000 copies before it reached #1 (James Masterton says over 900,000 in his current column but I think he may be 100,000 out). Think Twice had also sold massive amounts prior to reaching #1, something like 600,000 copies.

Say Robbie, thinking about I FOUND LOVIN` with the FATBACK BAND first entered in June 84, although it was reissued about twice, was all over the clubs, for 4 years or so. It took until 1988, to get to number 7.

Have you a complete run on the top 100, for it? I can`t find one at home.

I don't mind all the chart runs, but when posting can you please credit the source of info, in short... where they came from.

I've got all the top 100s but don't have them in a database that I can readily search by title, just by weekly date. Though I'm sure if I messed about with the database I could find the full top 100 runs - I'll see what I can do... Polyhex used to have the top 100 runs for all songs from 1983 - 1991 but dropped them down to a top 75 only.
