Unless I've forgotten something this is the first of two cover versions to reach my top spot. I adored it as soon as I heard it and still do to this day, though not quite as much. They're a brilliant band who deserve far more success than they've actually had. Hope their recent third album is up to standard. This kept off Willy Mason 'Oxygen' in its first week at the top and something else in its second...

#26 Stereophonics 'Dakota' (02-01-01-01-01-05-06-08-08-10-13-15-19-21-26-29-34-36-36-39) (20 weeks)

They used to be my favourite band. First two albums were awesome and then they lost something and released tripe like 'Have A Nice Day' and 'Maybe Tomorrow'. But then they came back with this. It was stunning and I loved it, the best thing in years and even gave them a UK number one! My re-found faith didn't last too long though as the album wore thin after a while. They managed to have decent singles though atleast. 'Hounds of Love' was behind it for its duration at the top.

Gosh it's amazing how one person can influence one's taste. Anyhoo it was a long time ago now and I doubt anyone will remember so I won't bore you with details. It kept The Departure and Daft Punk off the top with their singles 'Lump In My Throat' and 'Robot Rock'.

I like pretty much all of the #1s you have posted so far, Mark. I bough The Streets Fit But You Know It when it was out - I kind of still like it, although I would never buy it again!

Dakota is one of my top songs ever, so good choice there too. I think I have Hounds Of Love on CD single - I will go and have a look later...

Ahh, when my Zane Lowe fad really came in to force. It was all I listened to for about 8 months. I did really love this at the time and I thought the album was great too but in hindsight it wasn't really anywhere near as good as I first thought and NIN aren't really my thing, though I still do think highly of this single. This kept Editors 'Munich' and Maximo Park 'Graffiti' off the top spot.

Thanks, I've posted this on three forums and The Streets one does seem to be disliked throughout!

I loved this when I first heard it, they really are, or were, a great band - so different yet so good. I don't quite like this so much now but they've another to come which I've always loved more! This kept off System of a Down 'BYOB' and Kaiser Chiefs 'Everyday I Love You Less And Less'.

Another excellent #1 - Feel Good Inc is the standout track of 2005 for me - it was #1 on my personal chart for 8 weeks (with Dakota being #1 for 7 weeks before and Speed Of Sound 5 weeks after!)

This might not seem like an obvious choice for number one but I love it! I've always thought this was brilliant and although they weren't the most original or interesting of bands they still sounded great on a summer's evening. I'm sure if they'd have released their comeback 6 months earlier/later they'd have done much better. It's really not the music you want to hear in October!! It kept Coldplay's 'Speed Of Sound' off the top!

Ahh, the Stripes at their very best. I love this song so much, by far my favourite of theirs! I'm not really a fan of them, I usually find them quite rubbish but there seems to be one or two songs on every album that are really good. This kept John Legend 'Ordinary People' and Jack Johnson 'Good People' off the top!

I was still caught up in my rediscovered 'Phonics love when this was released. I still think it's a pretty decent song and one of their few real gems since P&C but 3 weeks at number one? Nah, especially when it kept 3 songs off I now feel are superior; Hard-Fi 'Hard To Beat', Royksopp 'Only This Moment' and Beck 'Girl'.

Featuring the vocals of The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess I was never quite sure just how much I liked this song but it took advantage of a fairly slow summer to get a week at the top. I'm certainly glad it did as it's grown on me a fair bit over time. Stronger than a lot of recent efforts, I feel.

#34 Maximo Park 'Going Missing' (01-01-01-01-02-04-10-15-20-22-31-33-32-34-38-39) (16 weeks)

A slightly surprising number one as I always felt it was their weakest of their three releases to date but their first to get higher than #2. And not only a number one, but for four weeks too. But as I just said, I felt summer 2005 was easily the weakest part of the year for music. This is the only song which I've bought on TWO physical formats.[/loon fan] It kept Bloc Party's 'Pioneers' and Goldfrapp's 'Oooh La La' off the top.

Not the most obvious of number one choices but I do really like them and I adored 'Howl' the album this came from. It was so different to anything else around at the time or since and I think it should've been huge. The shortest running single so far.

#36 Oasis 'The Importance Of Being Idle' (01-03-04-05-08-16-15-17-17-22-21-24-28-32-34) (15 weeks)

Describing Oasis' work since 'Morning Glory' as mediocre would probably be too complimentary. But somehow they managed to spring this upon us, only the second song of theirs after 'Songbird' that I've really liked since 1995. It's not as good as they were once capable of but refreshing all the same. It was good to see them hit the top of the charts on merit rather than entirely down to fanbase. John Legend had to settle for number 2 again, this time with 'Number One'.
