#37 Gorillaz 'DARE' (01-03-02-04-07-09-12-11-13-13-14-17-19-24-29-32-33-35-38) (19 weeks)

An instant highlight from 'Demon Days' this was almost certain to hit the top spot if given a release. And it did. A brilliant record, capped wonderfully with the different voices and of course, Shaun Ryder. It kept The Bravery off the top with 'Unconditional'.

I shall hopefully finish 2005 later this evening, starting with what I regard as my best ever number one single, I wonder what it could be....

#38 Arcade Fire 'Rebellion (Lies)' (01-01-01-01-01-02-03-03-04-04-06-07-10-11-13-14-12-16-19-23-25-25-24-26-30-36-38-37-38) (29 weeks)

And here it is. Of all 100 number ones, this is the one I love the most. They weren't a band that had grabbed my attention previously, their singles had all charted but not very high. But then I heard this, it grabbed me from the first second, it's so unbeliveably good and I could never get bored of it. Only two songs have ever spent longer at the top, it's the longest running single ever, my favourite ever number one, my favourite song of the decade and close to being my favourite song ever. It's certainly in my top 3, anyway! I will never tire of hearing the stunning piece of music. It was released amongst a lot of competition too; Coldplay 'Fix You', Kanye West ft Jamie Foxx 'Gold Digger', Pendulum 'Slam', The Go! Team 'Bottle Rocket' and the Pendulum remix of The Prodigy's 'Voodoo People' - all FANTASTIC pieces of music which I still think are great but it had to be something special too knock it off...

#39 Louis XIV 'Finding Out True Love Is Blind' (01-02-04-05-06-07-10-13-16-19-23-25-24-28-33-38-37) (17 weeks)

By far the most obscure song yet. I first heard this when it was released on the 'Illegal Tender' EP in the Spring and it charted at #4 but became the first re-issue to top my chart 6 months later. A fabulous, yet filthy song, from an equally fabulous yet filthy album. They're probably a one trick pony and if they come back I'll be surprised, but I hope they do as I love them!

I felt incredibly pleased when this went to number one. Not only because I loved it, but because I predicted it. Everyone on all the forums I posted on was going on about Sugababes vs McFly and then this unknown band come and take number one, surely the mids weren't right? I still love this, one of their moments of real quality.

#41 Maximo Park 'Apply Some Pressure' (02-01-01-02-03-02-05-11-15-16-17-21-26-29-29-25-28-33) (18 weeks)

And only a fortnight after the first ever re-issue topped my chart the second one did as this climbed from its entry position of 2. It had entered behind the Monkeys but there was no way a song, and band, I loved this much were going to be stuck at number 2 twice! Still my favourite song of theirs now.

I love how your taste has matured over the years; it's certainly something I can relate with as I seem to have gone along somewhat similar lines  Very interesting read indeed.

CAN I JUST how amazing was Finding Out True Love Is Blind though please? Absolute blinder of a song and certainly a defining song for that year. It was all so fresh back then. I was very disappointed with all the other material I heard by Louis XIV mind. 'Pledge Of Allegiance' particularly was an absolute abomination.

Dare, I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor and Apply Some Pressure

I do like Arcade Fire, but i just can't get into them like i can with loads of other bands

Another great group from your list. Highlights for me include Superman, Going Missing, Importance Of Being Idle, Dare, Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor and Apply Some Pressure

I really fell behind on this and I can't be arsed to go through all the songs and catch up. So I'll just do the last few.

Not really a fan of Oasis but the last five you've done are all brilliant in their own way. Arcade Fire are easily one of my favourite bands, I could listen to them all day and Rebellion (Lies) is definitely one of their best. Stunning song. Dare is a great song and probably the only Gorillaz single I've liked. I like Louis XIV too, but didn't hear much from them. Finding Out True Love Is A Blind was a brilliant song though. Arctic Monkeys and Maximo Park - again both excellent songs. ^_^

Cheers Cass!

Good to see some Louis love, even if just one song. I do quite like the album but 'Pledge of Allegiance' certainly isn't one of the best on it...

They aren't the easiest of bands to like. If it wasn't for 'Rebellion' I probably still wouldn't like them because I find (or atleast found) it so different to their other suff.

Thanks for the comments! ^_^ It's good to see people on here knowing the more obscure songs. Dare is the best Gorillaz song for me too!

Excelent list so far Mark, just looking at this page are some excelent songs from Maximo Park, Arctic Monkeys and Gorillaz. And of couse that excelent tune from Arcade Fire, my second favourite song by them behind "Intervention". Nor really many songs on your list so far (that i've heard) that I don't like. Fantastic. ^_^

Arcade Fire were only off the top 5 weeks before they were there again with 'Wake Up'. Still in love with the album and the band this was always going to go to the top being released so quickly. I now think it's one of the weaker songs on 'Funeral' but it's still excellent. They stopped Stereophonics becoming the first (and would still have been only) act to have three number ones in one year with 'Rewind'.

Thanks Jonny. I've always loved 'Intervention' but it never quite managed to make it onto this list. :(

#43 The Futureheads 'Area' (01-03-04-04-03-04-05-10-14-14-18-18-26-31-37) (15 weeks)

Released as a stop-gap between albums I loved this. It showed so much promise which wasn't quite lived up to. But that would've been hard seeing as it's better than pretty much everything they've done anyway. It's classic Futureheads, who are easily one of my favourite acts of the decade.

Now, my first number one was 'Good Luck', so it was the first number one to be sung by a female. It took almost TWO YEARS for the next one!

#44 Royksopp 'What Else Is There?' (01-01-01-02-02-04-04-05-07-06-07-09-14-20-20-17-18-17-20-24-26-32-39-35-38) (25 weeks)

So, Karin Dreijer of The Knife was the second female to provide vocals on a number one. And what a song to do it on. The original version of this is stunning, one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever heard. Then, somehow, Stuard Price AKA Thin White Duke AKA Jacques Lu Cont AKA Les Rythmes Digitales took some of the vocals and turned it into a much more dancey version at 8 and a half minutes long. If I wasn't enough in love with it already I certainly was after hearing that. It's utterly fabulous. It kept Guillemots and The Subways off the top with 'Trains To Brazil' and 'No Goodbyes'.
