Today is the day! :D Who else will be getting it?

I bought it :D

I haven't listened to the entire album yet, but 'We Carry On' is immense; the beats and riffs throughout are superb. Other songs I like so far are 'Silence', 'Machine Gun' and 'Magic Doors'.

Yorke praises Portishead

Thom and Goldfrapp compliment Third album

28 April 2008

BBC RADIO6 NEWS - Thom Yorke has said Portishead’s new album Third, which has just come out, is their best record.

The Radiohead front man said: “It’s dark as man. Definitely their best record, there’s no doubt about that.

“My favourite one is a song called The Rip and then there’s one at the end which sounds exactly like that old 70’s band Silver Apples - just mental.”

Radiohead

Ed O'Brien from Radiohead also is a fan of the record: “It’s so beautiful, its so beautiful in parts. I have to say I actually thinking it’s my favourite Portishead record.”

He went on: “First track is immense….there’s a Brazilian thing going on in there and it’s just incredible.”

Goldfrapp

Despite the gap between this album and their last, Goldfrapp's Will Gregory - who makes an appearance on the Portishead record – said he does not see it in that context.

He said: “I think that their first record was so important and so innovative that I don’t think they’ve ever really gone away.

“I think echoes of that are still resonating – I think it had a huge influence and it still does so I don’t think it’s really a comeback. I don’t think they have ever really gone.”"I just think they’ve got a very good brilliant sort of sonic vision"

Will played saxophone on two tracks on the album and his relationship with the band goes back a long way because he played with them for the Portishead in NYC live album.

And Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley has appeared on every Goldfrapp album so far.

Third

Talking more about their third album, Will said: “I think it sounds really interesting – I think every thing they do sounds interesting to me y’know.

“I just think they’ve got a very good brilliant sort of sonic vision and understand how to make very emotional sounds. I’ve always thought that – so I fully expect this one to be brilliant as well.”

Fans

The new music was showcased on the band’s recent tour and many fans had something to say about it.

One man said: “This new stuff just seems like it’s gonna terrify me in such a good way.”

Another gig-goer said: “It’s just dark – it just creates an atmosphere. It’s got something about it - you stand there. You’re totally captivated by it."

One fan likened it to Joy Division, he said: “It sounds a bit more grungy - a bit more Joy Divisiony I think. It’s different. It’s very different but a good sound I think.”

Alison Goldfrapp & Beth Gibbons need to collaborate POST HASTE. Third is every way as brilliant as Seventh Tree in my humble opinion.

I have to say, what an absolutely brilliant album!

The sounds and atmospheres encompased in this album are so unique and incredible, as ever they've put themselves right at the forefront of the most creative acts out there. It's totally different to their first two efforts but then again after a decade away, it's only right that they attempt a new sound and they've moved on from it yet maintained complete and total originality.

Like someone said, it has a brilliant mix of beautiful chilled numbers and gritty uptempo ones. Not only that, but the way the album is formulated and the way the tracklisting is arranged makes the album flow perfectly from start to finish. Although I have to admit, it could have done without that 'Deep Water' thing that was sandwiched between 'We Carry On' and 'Machine Gun', the album's two main uptempos as that's the only thing which sounds even slightly out of place for me, even though at one and a half minutes long it seems more like an interlude.

I think this easily gets my album of the year title and is likely to maintain that. As for the Goldfrapp comparisons, this BY FAR AND AWAY blows Seventh Tree out of the water and overshadows it completely. Long live Portishead!

Is it worth me checking these out? Anyone think they'd be to my taste?

One knows none of their moosik o;

I'd say it's worth a definite shot. Also check out the older stuff as well to get a full idea of what they're like. :D

This album has sold 21k in it's first day of release, making it 100% certain to be #2 this week. This will mean all their albums (bar the live one) have made #2 (and been robbed of a deserving #1).

Shame it couldn't have trounced Madonna, but it's an amazing result regardless.

MY REVIEW....

Portishead are probably the most darkest and Gothic of all bands in the world... And "Third" proves it once and for all.... For me, true Gothic music is about a creation of mood, atmosphere, about finding a beauty within darkness (or indeed a darkness within beauty...). This is what Portishead completely nails..... Trip Hop?? Please.... There is nothing remotely 'trippy' about what Portishead do (unless you talk about a trip of the extremely BAAAD kind...). "Chill out" music??? Oh, yeah, right, because the themes and imagery that Portishead's music evokes really lends itself to a 'chilled' listening experience...... They are not a band to 'chill out' to. Seriously, actually try listening to them on your own in the dead of night... Does it make you feel somehow 'relaxed'....? If it does, then you aint really listening to what Beth Gibbons is saying....

If you were to say Portishead were beautiful.... Then you'd be right.... They are the most elegant and beautiful of bands, their music is awesome, awe-inspiring and so contradictory.... Retro, yet so ahead of its time... Beth Gibbons is possessed of a voice that pierces into your soul, she is truly an artist, truly a soul singer.. The best artists are guarded and mysterious, almost ephemeral.. What do we truly know of Gibbons, Barrow and Utley...? We know only what we need to know, that they create some of the greatest music evet put on a record...

I'm still trying to process what I've heard here... It is beaufiful, intense, melancholy, heartbreaking, dark, unsettling.... Portishead have always managed to create an intense mood and atmosphere with their music, but "Third" is just so much more than they have ever done before.. From opener "Silence", to "The Rip" to the intense, almost Industrial/Avant Garde "Machine Gun", to the closing track, absolutely NOTHING is wasted here... I seriously dont want to wait another 10 years until I hear an album like this again......

I agree it IS worth buying, it's an IMMENSELY brilliant album, so beautiful and moving.

If there is one album you buy this year, i recommend this one.

Oh and PLEASE do check out their back catalogue particularly their 1994 album 'Dummy'.

It's pure brilliance.

"Dummy" is indeed a timeless, modern classic... One of these records that you keep going back to again and again, discovering something new that you hadn't noticed before... All the truly great albums have this quality IMO....

Definitely. Although I only really discovered this band about 1/2 years ago properly after only knowing the main hits previously, they've totally captivated me and I'm in awe of them. Dummy is a completely and 100% flawless album, timeless and can be listened to over and over again.

I can't get enough of Third since buying it, I was walking home in the dark earlier listening to it on my iPod loudly... it made for a very chilling and satisfying listen.

I'm going to take the plunge and download this album :0

I will send you a few older tracks - I think you will like them.

Indeed - nearly 14 years after I have bought it, I would easily rate it as one of the best albums ever. The depth and mood of the whole album is just astounding!

The follow up Portishead is amazing as well, I rate it nearly as highly as Dummy - although it is a less coherent album than Dummy imo.

I listened to this today several times. Absolutely excellent. So hauntingly beautiful
