Posted February 24, 200817 yr Britain is experiencing the worst 'brain drain' of any country in the world as record numbers of its most educated citizens leave the country. The biggest exodus from the UK for almost 50 years means that millions of highly qualified professionals, including doctors, teachers and engineers, are emigrating to live and work abroad. No other nation is losing so many qualified people, according to a study from the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, and, over the last decade, Britain has lost more than one in ten of its most skilled citizens. What can be done to halt Britain's 'brain drain'? Why are so many people leaving the UK? What would encourage highly-skilled graduates to stay in the country in which they received their education? February 24, 200817 yr That is countered by the arrival into the UK of many overseas professionals particularly in medicine and engineering from places like India Swings and roundabouts
February 25, 200817 yr Another media non story. Talent goes out of the country while talent comes in. It's a world-wide market now - you can come and go as you please and that's exactly what people with brains are gonna do. This is a good thing - it's only the parochial minds who read papers like the Mail and the Telegraph who would think otherwise.

The relative ease of world travel, the opening of European borders is making it a lot less problematic for people to come and go now.. I for one welcome the fact that we are all now pretty much "citizens of the world" as opposed to being closed behind our borders...
February 27, 200817 yr i would quite happily move 2 another country. i am thinking about doing a postgrad in the states when i finish up in about 3years time

I agree with that, we may be part of Europe and part of a global economy and so on but it is essential we maintain our national identity and our national culture

Although in a lot of ways narrow-minded nationalism has been responsible for most of the world's wars... I have no great love for Patriotism or Nationalism, I view it with suspicion at best.. There's a fine line between maintaining a national identity and the sort of parochial, ignorant, narrow-minded "nationalism" that led to the genocide in the former Yugoslavia.... I think I agree with Oscar Wilde to be honest - "patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel".... Look at Thatcher wrapping herself in the Union Jack and all that Falklands sh!te to get the Tories a second term in '83 as an example mate..... -_-
