ok guys... lets start!

the 'my album of' idea is to take a topic, a theme, anything like a year, genre, mood, anything that can link tracks. the idea is then to list the tracks that YOU would use on this album, max 12, min 8, and to give a brief commentary on it. people are then free to comment and add their own album list on that threads theme. i want to keep it as an individual choice and not a collective, this way more obscure tracks will get airtime. simply title the thread "my album of" followed by the topic ... over to you!

1996 was quite a good year IMHO and the best for music for ten years, heres my listing of some great tracks that would be on my 'album of.... 1996'.

1 Oasis - 'dont look back in anger' . gotta be an all time anthem and one that if the beatles had released it in '67 could have been THE record of the decade. to me it has everything a damn good pop song should have, one of the best tracks of the 90's.

2 Age of love - 'age of love' a superb dance track that was one of the first 'ibiza' style trance tracks

3 Harvey danger - 'flagpole sitta' a great little upbeat track use as the theme for mitchell and webbs 'peep show'

4 Echobelly - 'dark therapy' utterly love this little known track, superb harmonies, great guitar.

5 Trick baby - 'indie yarn' a real odd track, asian indie, but i like the attempt of trying something different.

6 Cher - 'one by one' i reckon her best since 'gypsies tramps and theives' in 71..

7 Supergrass - 'going out' britpop top group with i reckon their best track.

8 Bluetones - 'marblehead johnson' another britpop classic, superb guitar riff, their best track .

9 Los del rio - 'macarena' lol... well... i went to spain!

10 Stretch n verne presents maddog - 'im alive' a lively dance track

11 BBE - 'seven days and one week' another good ibiza anthem, like its 'sunny' sound, it fits ibiza and sums up that holiday feel...

12Cast - 'sandstorm' britpopers again imho reaching their zenith, love this track.

not a deal actually, but in my album id try to get some variety, (ok most are britpop acts...lol) and it was reprisentitive of that era especially if like me youd been to spain that year. guess its nostalgia value is greater then its actual merit as a song...lol.

yeah, I must admit that song was very successful (like Lambada :bounce: )

I always admire your varied taste, some good entries there, although I always thought Cast were kinda cack to be honest! And I hate Oasis with utter passion!

Thumbs up for Stretch n Vern and Age of Love though! The latter was actually released initially in 1991 but was never a hit.

This is a great idea, by the way, I think 1989 or 1991 would be my choice of year... I'll get my thinking cap on!

oh heck!.... just checked... i knew 'age of love' (like cafe del mar) was created much earlier then when it finally charted, but 'age of love' was actually a hit in 98!!! not as i believed in '96...

ill substitute 'age of love' for chicane 'offshore'...another superb dance/trance track :)

as for cast n oasis... fair play, these threads are about personal tastes, and you dont have to chose a year for 'MY ALBUM OF' , you can chose any topic, and add your own for '96 here on this thread.

I like "Going Out" by Supergrass but I would have gone for Richard III - that song rocks!

Sorry Rob, most of them I don't know, Didn't think much of the 90's music scene, it kinda passed me by.

Apart from Cher, only 2 I liked were:

1 Oasis - 'dont look back in anger'....great song a modern day classic

7 Supergrass - 'going out...always liked them

9 Los del rio - 'macarena' what can I say.

Bloody hell Rob... apart from Age Of Lovce (a seminal tune).. your album of '96 wouldn't get much airtime round at my gaff :o ;) Cher? And Macarena? Yikes...

My Album of 96 would go something like this...

1) Underworld- Born Slippy

2) Space- Female Of The Species

3) Everything But The Girl- Walking Wounded

4) Suede - Trash

5) The Prodigy- Breathe

6) Space - Neighbourhood

7) George Michael- Fast Love

8) Todd Terry- Jumpin'

9) Way Out West- The Gift

10) Lamb - Cotton Wool

11) Nearly God- Poems

12) Death In Vegas- Dirt

yeah i liked the production on 'one by one'.. but my defence of 'macarena' isnt that strong...lol.

imho prodigy had passed there best by '96 peaking with 'no good (start the dance)'

i was like that 88-95, even now the 90's wasnt big with me which is why i chose 96 as its the first year for ten years that i could (just) find 12 tracks.

This would be my album of 1996...

(01) Sandy B - Make The World Go Round (Deep Dish 12" Mix)

(02) Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground

(03) Alcatraz - Giv Me Luv

(04) LL Cool J - Loungin'

(05) Pulse - The Lover That You Are

(06) Neneh Cherry - Woman

(07) Livin Joy - Don't Stop Movin'

(08) Nuyorican Soul - Runaway

(09) Leftfield - Release The Pressure

(10) Bedrock Feat KYO - For What You Dream Of

Dance music is - as some of you may be aware - my first love, and bearing in ming 1996 was a bloody good year for the genre, this dreamlist seems very top heavy.

doesnt matter what style of music you are into... if dance is your predominant flavour then theres nowt wrong with chosing an album of dance tracks m8... the notion of this thread is to give 'airtime' to tracks that otherwise might not get mentioned (like in collective lists).

some good tracks there...except the fugees...lol.i hate them! especially that thrack, destroyed the original sample.

'For What You Dream Of' is euphoric bliss! I avoid overplaying it though, every now and then I dig it out and play the full length 12" (the radio edit just doesn't cut it). Those of you who are unaware of this track, it's featured on the Trainspotting soundtrack - at the part where Ewan McGregor (can't remember the characters name) is in a club and off his head on drugs. Needless to say, you don't need any sort of stimulant to get off your t*ts to this track!

Some interesting and varied choices so far! Mine would look something like this:

01 - Duffy - She freak No, not that Duffy! Stephen 'Tintin' Duffy was going by this moniker at the time and did a great jangly indie album with members of Velvet Crush.

02 - Kula Shaker - Tattva Yeah, I know, probably as unhip as 'Macarena', but I love it's swirling 60s psychedelia, courtesy of John Leckie's production.

03 - Manic Street Preachers - A design for life The Manics returned after the loss of Ritchie with this over-the-top production (if you listen carefully you can probably hear someone playing a kitchen sink). Fab!

04 - Kenickie - Punka Lauren Lavern's finest moment. All shouty enthusiasm and great hooks. Who'd've thought she'd end up as a telly presenter?

05 - Chemical Brothers - Setting sun A great howling single with Noel Gallagher struggling to be heard over the top of it.

06 - Lush - Single girl Lush stop gazing at their shoes long enough to produce this great three minutes of guitar pop. 'Ladykillers' was pretty awesome too.

07 - Gretschen Hofner - Welcome to my Judy Garland life A band not a woman - this was their finest and campest moment. Another big swirling production - are we detecting a theme here?

08 - Legend B - Lost in love (Red Jerry remix) Nine minutes of throbbing trance with crescendo after crescendo and breakdown after breakdown. Magnificent!

09 - Tiger - Race Indie darlings who vanished very quickly, leaving two great singles; this and 'Shining in the wood'.

10 - The Prodigy - Firestarter Anything that upsets the press has to be good. Especially if it's as great to dance to as this.

I think this album idea is going to produce some good, interesting threads. Must go away and have a think! :D

yep thats the idea :)

its also a forum for promoting your personal favs from the theme, hopefully we might all discover some new 'missed' tracks

That Legend B track was a pretty essential dance record... I loved that one.

Lush, too, such a shame they lost their drummer just as they started releasing fabulous music and selling lots of records :(
