March 31, 200817 yr  What a sweeping statement! I suspect that most fans have only just got the track on the album and don't realise it is a single yet... Either way, I love it, and no-one can make me change my mind :) exactly... iTunes chart... so what? Who on earth even bothers reading the fricking iTunes chart?! I didn't even know one existed thankfully  People have the album - so why rush out for a song they already have? Goldfrapp's real fanbase are, on the whole, collectors - they buy anything and everything - so it's obvious they'll wait for the physical release. And as for chart-heads here wringing their hands in desperation that Goldfrapp may not have a huge hit here - you worry too much. If Alison Goldfrapp wanted another smash hit single, she'd have carried on making unsatisfying uber-commercial trash like 75% of Supernature. She doesn't give a toss about chart positions. And Will Gregory cares even less (my mate works with him quite a lot, they've just finished a score for a horror movie - a 1920s horror movie ;) - he can't be arsed with the fame nonsense...as long as he makes records - he's happy...and considering Goldfrapp are the jewels in Mute's crown right now.... they can release whatever they want... and they'll still have a deal). The beauty of Goldfrapp, for those of us that have followed them from Day One, is that they change their style for every album.... regardless of trends (they set them, anyway), regardless of chart positions (they've had huge hits, they've had flops - so what?), regardless of what fans or casual followers may think (the casual followers were always going to want another Supernature - thank God they didn't get it)... and I wholly admire them for that. When you look around and see a chart that features pitiful fluff like the last Kylie Minogue album (the majority of it a Goldfrapp pastiche - and a really bad one at that - Wow? Yes - wow, what a shockingly appalling album - 2 Hearts - oh please, Kylie.... it's like "Tonight Matthew I'm going to be... ALISON GOLDFRAPP!!! And then does it in an Anne-from-Little-Britain-stylee - toe-curling) and any number of awful acts who've copied Goldfrapp from the music (Rachel Stevens' note-for-note pastiche of Strict Machine for that single I can't even remember the name of) down to her clothes and shoes (Madonna).... thank God they move on and leave everyone else behind scratching their heads wondering what on earth they're doing.... that's the sign of a true, bona fide artist - let's face it, she's the only interesting, challenging female in the pop world - end of - I think it's fabulous she's ever-changing and her refusal to play it easy by doing the same thing over again - how boring that would be, eh? So let's see how long it takes Kylie, Madonna et al to catch onto the loved-up hippy vibe of Seventh Tree, eh? Let Madonna shame herself with her ghastly ghetto-ho period (again) for now... she'll be in flowing capes and au naturel ringlets by the next album (can't see her au naturel on the make-up front, though :P ). As for Happiness - it's the most obvious choice for a single on the whole album and should've been single numero uno.
March 31, 200817 yr I've said it before, and if as you say, Goldfrapp truly don't care about the charts - then that's just lovely and romantic and fabulously old-school - but record companies do not work that way. They can't just release anything and get away with it even if the sales aren't there. To date Seventh Tree has only sold 100,000 copies and the lead single's sales power is now completely gone. If the album makes platinum then they're truly safe, but if it can't push past 150-200k I'd predict that the next time around they will be guided in a much more commercial route, because the label does need those sales. And you've never heard of the iTunes chart? There's a huge thread about it in Chart Chat - it's updated several times a day. How has that passed you by?! You might not care about it but it's a huge indication of how the song will perform. Normally if a song is on Radio 1's A-list it will be found within the upper half of itunes' most-downloaded - the song not being present anywhere IS quite the worry.

March 31, 200817 yr And what's your point? I'm saying that this song is getting major airplay and yet still no downloads, whereas A&E got many downloads, and fast - how does what you've just pointed out relate to this?
March 31, 200817 yr Major conglomerates, maybe - but you're talking Mute Records here - the beauty of small labels is that you don't have to conform, you don't have to follow some numb, dumb Cowell-inspired company line and you don't have to make music that only dullard Radio One daytime DJs will understand. You've got artists like Depeche Mode on Mute - a band with a huge loyal fanbase, like Goldfrapp's, whose singles enter the charts high then plummet like a stone the next week..... the debut single from an album is usually huge, the follow-ups are less and less successful - but they never toe a commercial line - they make music they want to hear.... same with Goldfrapp. If Happiness bombs - fine... there's always Caravan Girl. But it'll do at least top 30.. probably one week in the top 20..... but I still say it should've been a summer single, to coincide with their Glastonbury performance - a place where Happiness was made to be played. To be honest - the Goldfrapp-faithful...and Alison herself... were majorly uncomfortable with the influx of newbies on their territory around Supernature... the 'new' fans ruined the more ambient old songs on the tour by talking all the way through them, only staying silent for the Supernature hits.... so I think no tears will be shed at the casual followers dropping off. Woops my mistake, I thought you was saying that for a song to be big it has to be Alisted. My apologies. :P

I cant explain BUT IT IS simple memorable...a rime for all the tastes. Its MY OPINION this tune its ideal for a chilout next to the sea or evening around the fire with mates...can be the beginning of something higher during a weekend outside the noising big cities;-...desnt need yto be glastonbury in our days busy as hell but still lovely! March 31, 200817 yr Well Russ, I do very much hope that you prove me wrong because however much I disagree with the choosing of Happiness as a single, I do love Goldfrapp and I wouldn't like them to flop. I also hope you're right about the label; that'd be a nice thought indeed. And Josh, no worries! Sorry that I snapped. Been a long couple of days. :P

March 31, 200817 yr Check out T.I.P's. personal chart its there. Thats a live version from T4 (excellent nonetheless).
March 31, 200817 yr It's grown on me a lot, I was dissapointed in "Seventh Tree" (nothing lived up to the fantastic "A&E" for me) but this has grown on me. I still only thing that the two singles and "Clowns" are good tracks on the album, but that's just my opinion.
April 1, 200817 yr i think Happiness will be as successful as A+E -_- i want this to be a massive hit sooooooo badly though
April 1, 200817 yr I think 'Happiness' is a decent enough choice of single, but the way the release is being dealt with is a disaster. It could do with being moved back a couple of weeks.
April 1, 200817 yr Oh my god, just saw the video its horrible! There is about 2 seconds of Alison and its so corny :(.

There are plenty of singles A-Listed by Radio 1 that have got nowhere near to the top half of the iTunes chart!
