yep, Water came 5th, ahead of Work Your Magic in 6th...I would have preffered both to be a place higher instead of Turkey being in the top five...

Belarus made quite the comeback last year didn't they? They were in the bottom half for much of the voting. :o

Almost no OGAE club has given points to Bulgaria yet, and then how come Bulgaria is in Top 10 of most fanpolls and betting odds?... However, I like the fact that Russia is not even in Top 5 in OGAE voting chart , hehehe! :D

Anyway, I still think Bulgaria doesn't get much from political/diasporra voting, otherwise it would have been be Mariana Popova (2006) to mark the success... That song was pretty much a Balkan ballad, yet neighbours didn't vote for it. The reason for the 5th place of "Water" is simply because it was 90% a Bulgarian folklore song - makes me wonder how it even got in Eurovision, because traditional folklore singing is forbidden, as far as I know - and it was mainly the West fascinated by the sound they don't have. Had it been only the neighbours' votes, that song wouldn't have come 5th. I'm not a fan of "Water" and that traditional sound in particular, but just like a famous music producer here said, there's no other way Bulgaria can fascinate Europe. Unfortunately.

I don't think Iceland is in any bad position; it's not about having neighbours or not - otherwise Malta, Cyprus, Iceland and San Marino would never ever qualify. I think Iceland's biggest problem this year is called Charlotte Perelli, rather than Balkans. Both songs are similar, though for me "This is My Life" is much better than "Hero", but well, rest of Europe doesn't seem to think so!

And finally, Croatia does have a classy and artistic song, just like Moldova, and just like 4Fun last year, who had to be at least in Top 10. However, Eurovision is not about meaningful music or lyrics, I'm sorry...

i hope Albania will get a better position than you predicted Rich ;) It's my fave Albanian song from ones i know
Have you heard the new version of Albania BTW Rich? :o It's v. different to the performance version, it's very good...

I don't remember, it goes so quickly these days I find it hard to keep up :heehee: I know in 2005, Helena was 9th about half way through but then got nearly all of the top votes from then on...

That's exactly why I liked it and voted for it...it was so fresh and different...I like authenticity in songs and Bulgaria sending a traditional song means that they got great respect from me. Unlike the latin songs from Scandanvia that we get every year...not exactly hot up there is it :heehee:

4Fun deserved top ten last year more than Croatia do now...perhaps if the old man wasn't in the song I would respect it that little bit more, but he completely ruins it, making it sound like a novelty song

That's where I disagree, I'm totally against ethno sound and folklore songs in ESC, that's why I don't think Helena or Sertab should have won, and I don't like Armenia and Cyprus this year for the same reason. It's not that I dislike ethno in general; it's just unfair. Eurovision is not a contest for "my country's traditional style". Moreover, you cannot compare different cultures and their different sound - I find both Irish traditional folk music and Greek one attractive, how can I choose which one is more attractive, when they're so different?... Therefore, in my opinion, countries shouldn't send their ethno stuff - it's probably gonna be liked by other nations, but that's not a fairplay.

In fact, I think Eurovision entries shouldn't be so drastically different in their genres. Simply because I can't compare incomparable things - if I like jazz, but also rock, and if there are 2 such songs, which entry should I vote for? If Moldova fails, does it mean the song is bad? No, not according to jazz musicians, I suppose. And how about France, which dared to send something alternative? If it ends last, does it mean that alternative music is internationally disliked? I know that if all songs were the same genre, it'd be boring, but come on, even MTV doesn't nominate r&b singers together with rock singers...

:o I quite like that No Angels song! :o Although its not very Eurovisiony! :( Still a good song though! ^_^

I think it makes for more diversity...I'd hate 43 Schlager songs or 43 ballads, it would be bland beyond belief...

why shouldn't countries send signfiers of their own culture...Eurovision is a platform for countries to show the best that they have to offer musically (apart from the UK which sends tat which is unrepresentative of our music scene). I think Eurovision success depends on the public mood at the time...if the 2007 contest was held five times, Molitva wouldn't win every time because on that particular day that she won, there were more ballad voters. I read a comment on here I think or somewhere else that there are 8 or 9 potential 'winners' this year and most years but its almost impossible to predict which song will win on the night as you can't predict the public mood. If there was a great worldwide tragedy on the day of the contest for example, people would vote for a mournful ballad as opposed to something cheesy...

I also like that Hero song! Thats very Eurovisiony and i thought id give that one a listen as i am seeing it everywhere on everyones Personal Charts!

Isn't exactly that which makes such contests meaningless and unrealistic then?

A good song should be good not only today, but also tomorrow.

perhaps, but you could say the same thing about all competitions and all music charts across the world...

the winners of TV talent shows may not always have won if the final was held on a different day, or at a different time...

a low selling No.1 single would not be No.1 if there had been a better single out at the time...but it does not make its status as a No.1 single any different...

certain winning songs such as Love Shine A Light, Fly On The Wings Of Love or Hard Rock Hallelujah could win the contest every single time, but others with less convincing winning margins are more lucky to win on the night, but we should not undermine their status as a winner

its the best one  I would recommend Norway's entry Hold On Be Strong but I know you're more of a pop fan Johnjo, so I'd recommend the Ukraine entry Shady Lady by Ani Lorak :D

Not necessarily - I think what Rich means is that such songs which are in contention to win, just on certain days some are better than others ;) I'm sure you aren't always in the mood for a ballad, or a cheesefest :P

quite :D put it this way, it wouldn't matter what day of the week or month of the year it was, Andy Abraham's Even If will always lose. But songs from Armenia, Ireland and Russia will do better or worse depending on whose watching at the time, and the public mood

Indeed...I think the year most subject to this was 2001, where I think any of the top 5 could have been the winner depending on public mood - I think that Estonia were very lucky in this respect as had Europe not been in the mood for that type of song it would've flopped miserably!

I was happy with the result but I know a lot of people wanted France to win...

Cyprus: Evdokia Kadi - Femme Fatale

What's with all of these weird female led songs, with chanting backing vocalists songs this year? Like the Portugese song, this wouldn't have been out of place in a 1990s Disney Film such as Beauty and the Beast. A Cypriot song with a French title, it is fairly underwhelming and continues Cyprus' recent run of poor entries. It can consider itself unlucky to find itself in the same semi-final as similarly structured but better songs from Albania and Portugal and its almost certain not to go through to the final.

Semi-Final Prediction: 15th

Final Prediction (if it makes it): 23rd
